Book Insects Harmful to Forest Trees

Download or read book Insects Harmful to Forest Trees written by Rene Martineau and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insects presented in this book are among the most common and the most destructive found on what are considered to be the most important tree species; namely, spruce, larch, pine, oak, maple and poplar. It is intended for use by both scientists and by practising foresters. To make the information contained in this volume more easily accessible, insects are grouped according to the tree species that they attack rather than by their entomological classification, and, for this reason, insects found on a given tree species are presented in the same chapter. The annual reports of the Forest Insect and Disease Survey have provided most of the information on history of outbreaks that is found in the text.

Download or read book Forest Entomology written by William Ciesla and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most abundant and diverse organisms that inhabit our planet and are found in all the world’s forest ecosystems. Many feed and/or breed on parts of trees. Some perform important functions, such as pollination or break-down of dead vegetation. Others weaken, deform or kill trees, and compete with humans for the many goods and services that trees and forests provide. Forest Entomology: A Global Perspective examines forest insects in a global context and reviews their dynamics, interactions with humans and methods for monitoring and management of species that damage forests. Also provided are 235 profiles of forest insects, worldwide. A series of tables provides summaries of the distribution and hosts of many more species. Included are those that damage forests, others that are simply curiosities and some that are beneficial. This book is designed as a reference for students, practicing foresters and forest health specialists, especially for those who work internationally or are concerned with species that have the potential to expand their ranges via international trade, travel or environmental changes.

Book Invasive Forest Insects Introduced Forest Trees and Altered Ecosystems

Download or read book Invasive Forest Insects Introduced Forest Trees and Altered Ecosystems written by Timothy D. Paine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demand for timber and fibre continues to grow and is being met by increased reliance on plantation forestry. Many of the plantations that are being grown around the globe are non-native species that have characteristics of rapid growth and good commercial qualities. In some cases, the high rates of production are a result of the absence of native herbivore and diseases. This limited pest status is threatened as pest species move around the globe. At the same time there is concern about threats of these non-native plantation species on native communities and the impact of changing climates on forest productivity. This volume explores many of these issues for the first time.

Book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis

Download or read book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis written by François Lieutier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.

Book Insect Pests in Tropical Forestry

Download or read book Insect Pests in Tropical Forestry written by F. R. Wylie and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are major pests of both natural and plantation forests in the tropics. This book is the first to provide a broad-based, international review of this subject at a level suitable for advanced students and practitioners. It describes the ecology and biology of the insects with special reference to the economic damage they cause to trees. All relevant control strategies are addressed. It is suitable for students, researchers and practitioners of forestry, ecology, pest management and entomology in tropical and subtropical countries.

Book Atlas of Insects Beneficial to Forest Trees

Download or read book Atlas of Insects Beneficial to Forest Trees written by Bohumil Starý and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the present time, the position of modern integrated protection of forests menaced by pests is increasing in importance, and not just because of demands on the quality and quantity of wood being raised. It is steadily becoming more necessary to revise the consequences of the often imprudent, although sometimes seemingly effective, chemical control in forest biocoenosis. Additionally, harmful insects are becoming more resistant to pesticides and so increasing the chance of accidentally jeopardizing plants. In the future concept of integrated forest pest control, we may therefore expect the population density of many harmful species to be regulated to a larger degree by biological control. This book discusses the economic importance of insects beneficial to the protection of forest trees, and provides information on their biology. The text and the pictorial section to this book divide beneficial insects into predators and parasites. The first section is devoted to predators, particularly ants, the most frequent insect species found in forests. Scale bugs, groups of predatory beetles, Neuroptera and Diptera are also mentioned. The second part describes parasitic insects. For this reason, representatives of the order Hymenoptera are mentioned twice: in the first section, among predators (ants) and, in the second part, among the parasites (ichneumons, braconids, chalcid-flies and Aphidiids). Similarly, Diptera are listed in the first section under predatory species (robber flies and lonchaeids) and then at the end of the text under parasitic species (tachinid-flies). An index of scientific names of the illustrated species and a short terminology complete the book. The book is intended as a text book for forestry and agricultural schools, and as a reference text for those concerned with the biological protection of forests, i.e. forest researchers, entomologists and biologists.
