Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects as Carriers of the Chestnut Blight Fungus It was early conjectured by Smith (45) and by Russell (41) that the black rot of cabbage due to Pseudomonas campestris may be transmitted by various insects. Evidence in support of this supposition has been brought forward by several writers; Brenner (5) showed that aphids may cause new infections, and Smith (46, pp. 306-307 succeeded in transmitting the disease by means of the larvae of a cabbage butterfly, Plusia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Chestnut, a Bibliography: A Bibliography of References to Castanea Dentata and Other Chestnut Species, and on Chestnut Blight and Its Causal Pathogen of the Fungal Genus Endothia or Cryphonectria In working with a bibliography over a period of 12 years, trends in research and publication become apparent. Jean Q. Wade carefully tabulated the entries by time period and subject, providing the data for a few observations here: The interest in fungi, particularly pathogens, was strong in the 19th Century and continues today. In contrast, nucleic acid and other biochemical studies are relatively recent. In the early blight period, there was a major effort to understand the life cycle, spread, and pathogenic action of the blight fungus. There has been only one attempt to summarize the history of the blight and research related to the blight, Fifty years of Chestnut Blight in America (beattie and Diller, They observed that, All of the cooperative work (among Federal and State scientists) slowed and almost came to a close in 1914 and 1915 when chestnut blight appropriations were greatly reduced. The organizations were broken up and the men scattered to do other work. The attempt to understand and stop the blight was meager. From 1906 to 1910, (while the disease was spreading north, south, and west from New York City), only a few hundred dollars a years of Federal money were In that year (1911) Congress appropriated In 1912 an appropriation of was made, and this was repeated the following the Pennsylvania legislature appropriated for the 1913-14 biennium (beattie and Diller. Book A Report on the Chestnut Tree Blight The Fungus Diaporthe Parasitica Murrill May 1909 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Report on the Chestnut Tree Blight The Fungus Diaporthe Parasitica Murrill May 1909 Classic Reprint written by John Mickleborough and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on the Chestnut Tree Blight: The Fungus, Diaporthe Parasitica, Murrill; May, 1909 In December, 1908, I was invited by Dr. J ane Baker, the physician in charge of Chester County Insane Hospital, to speak before an Educational Conference at Embreeville, Pa. On this Visit several infested chestnut trees were found. The disease was not prevalent. The inspection of forests to ascertain the presence of the blight, under the direction of the Department of Forestry, began March 29th, 1909. The counties first to receive attention were, Dauphin, Leba non, Berks (west), Cumberland, and Franklin. This is a rich agri cultural section of the State lying between South Mountain and North Mountain or the Blue Ridge. The Lebanon and Cumberland valleys are a limestone formation and very few chestnut trees are to be found until the mountain slopes are reached where the chestnut growth is abundant. A careful inspection of the forests was made on each side of the Susquehanna where the river cuts through the Blue Ridge to the north of Harrisburg, and at Middletown where it wends its way beyond the broken ridges of South Mountain. An examina tion of chestnut forests was made at Wernersville in Berks County, and as far west as Mont Alto in Franklin. Examinations were made along South Mountain at Hunters Run, Mt. Holly Springs, and farther south at Idaville. The Chestnut tree blight was not found to the north and west of South Mountain. It becomes an interest ing question whether the valley from twelve to twenty miles or more in width between North and South Mountains may not act as an effective barrier to the progress of the disease into the interior of the State. At Mont Alto, the State Forestry Academy was visited. This institution is doing most excellent work. The instructors are able and practical men, and the students are enthusiastic lovers of nature. The value of having trained men in the service of the Department can not be too highly estimated. The next region of the State to be inspected was to the south and east of South Mountain. From the city of Lancaster three trips were made by trolley, first to Ephrata, econd to Quarryville, and the third to Gap. At each of these places the blight was found. Specimens of bark were taken from trees six and eight inches in diameter. Infected sprouts or coppice about stumps were obtained. Under the microscope spores of the deadly fungus in uncountable millions were shown. The disease was most prevalent at Gap. Ephrata in Lancaster is south of South Mountain and is only twelve miles from Wernersville in Berks county where the forests of South Mountain furnished no evidence of the disease. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal Domestic Plant Quarantines: March 1965 Certain plant diseases, insects, and other destructive plant pests cost the people of this country more than $7 billion a year due to their damage and money spent to control them. Most of this loss is chargeable to alien pests and diseases, many of which came to this country before our Federal quarantine laws were enacted. The European corn borer, for example, probably got into this country in 1910 on imported broomcorn. It now infests too vast an area for-an effective quarantine effort. Chestnut blight, a fungus disease from Asia, has killed almost all of our na tive chestnut trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Disease and Insect Resistance in Plants

Download or read book Disease and Insect Resistance in Plants written by Dhan Pal Singh and published by Science Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers in detail the principles and practices of conventional plant breeding as well as newer and recent biotechnological tools such as marker assisted selection and transgenic crops. The book is suitable for use as an advanced text. A basic knowledge of plant pathogens, insect-pests and their genetics is assumed. In addition, the book can be used as reference book by plant pathologists, entomologists and geneticists engaged in developing germplasm, with resistance to biotic stresses. Attempts have been made to draw specific examples from as many different crop plants and their harmful parasites as possible, and an extensive reference list provides access to the original literature.

Book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape

Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This little book is big fun."—Michael Pollan An illustrated mini-encyclopedia of fungal lore, from John Cage and Terence McKenna to mushroom sex and fairy rings Fungipedia presents a delightful A–Z treasury of mushroom lore. With more than 180 entries—on topics as varied as Alice in Wonderland, chestnut blight, medicinal mushrooms, poisonings, Santa Claus, and waxy caps—this collection will transport both general readers and specialists into the remarkable universe of fungi. Combining ecological, ethnographic, historical, and contemporary knowledge, author and mycologist Lawrence Millman discusses how mushrooms are much more closely related to humans than to plants, how they engage in sex, how insects farm them, and how certain species happily dine on leftover radiation, cockroach antennae, and dung. He explores the lives of individuals like African American scientist George Washington Carver, who specialized in crop diseases caused by fungi; Beatrix Potter, creator of Peter Rabbit, who was prevented from becoming a professional mycologist because she was a woman; and Gordon Wasson, a J. P. Morgan vice-president who almost single-handedly introduced the world to magic mushrooms. Millman considers why fungi are among the most significant organisms on our planet and how they are currently being affected by destructive human behavior, including climate change. With charming drawings by artist and illustrator Amy Jean Porter, Fungipedia offers a treasure trove of scientific and cultural information. The world of mushrooms lies right at your door—be amazed!
