Book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint written by Robert Hartig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of the Diseases of Trees Some fifty years ago a number of able investigators, of whom only Saxesen, Th. Hartig, and Ratzeburg need be named here, applied themselves to the study of insects. The life-history of forest insects, their harmfulness or usefulness, soon became the favourite study of many practical foresters, and in a few decades the joint efforts of numerous workers were rewarded by the elevation of Forest Entomology to the position of a much appreciated subject of scientific instruction, which has become the common property of all educated foresters. The case was otherwise with those plant-diseases which cannot be ascribed to the injuries of animals. Their investi gation was delayed until quite recently; for it was only after botanical science, by the aid of its chief instrument, the microscope, had obtained a clear insight into the normal strue ture and vital phenomena of plants, and especially after the study of fungi had been prosecuted in the last few decades by a series of distinguished investigators, that the examination of the phenomena of disease in the life of plants could be undertaken with a prospect of success. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Leaflets on Fungus Pests and Allied Diseases of Fruit Trees Unlike insect pests, which are for the most part more or less clearly understood, there is often a certain mystery in the public mind connected with fungi. Their strange form, sudden appear ance and devastating habits are not readily explainable. To the practical fruit grower painful familiarity with their presence soon robs fungus parasites of any mysterious charm, and, by force of circumstances, he is compelled to study them, if it be only their mode of attacking plants and the best methods of keeping them at bay. Whether, however, the origin and} habits are understood or not, it may not be inadvisable to point out at the commencement of this volume the main outlines of the life of any ordinary fungus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Tree Diseases Tm: steadily accumulating knowledge of the diseases of trees in the United States has never been brought together and made available to the general public. The intention of this Manual is to describe and suggest means of control for the tree diseases that have been most studied. Much remains to be learned about many of these diseases, and still many more have never been investigated. Therefore, in the treatment of this subject there are many unavoidable limitations which the trained reader will perceive. The diseases of fruit-trees, and of field and vegetable crops, have received the attention of plant pathologists in most parts of the country for many years. The results of these investigations have been made available to the growers of these crops in various ways. On the other hand, the diseases of forest, shade, and ornamental trees have been largely neglected until very recently. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in the South, 1978 Damage caused by this insect is primary to the aesthetics of the area. Defoliation is unsightly in the spring and early summer. Cankerworms also caused public concern on the Appalachian Trail, in private and Federal campgrounds, and picnic areas within the defoliated areas. A nuisance effect results when the young larvae hang down on silken strands and the frass rains down on the users of these recreation areas. The following figures show the estimated acreage of light to heavy defoliation by location within each State, in 1978. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Young Trees on Tree Claims In the third place, the comparative aridity of the region where these claims are located renders tree growth somewhat slower then where the precipitation of moisture is more bountiful. This slowness of growth, while it is an advantage in one respect, aids the insect foes to a considerable extent in their work of destruction. A rank and rapid growth places a tree out of danger from external enemies much more quickly than will a slow growth. At the same time, in a rank growth, a much greater amount of food is furnished for the same number of insects, and as a consequence, less injury results than if the growth were slower. Book Diseases in Southeastern Forest Nurseries and Their Control Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases in Southeastern Forest Nurseries and Their Control Classic Reprint written by Charles S. Hodges and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases in Southeastern Forest Nurseries and Their Control The increased production of seedlings, often accomplished by increasing the seedling density on existing nurseries, brought about a new awareness of disease problems. Now that production has been lowered somewhat, losses from diseases, insects, and poor agronomic practices must be kept as low as possible to keep down the price per thousand seedlings. This handbook gives descriptions and control of the more common dis eases of seedlings of forest trees occurring in southern nurseries. It is divided into four major parts: (1) disease descriptions and specific control measures, (2) general methods and techniques involved in controlling the diseases, (3) list of chemicals and formulations used to control the diseases, and (4) names and addresses of chemical manufacturers.
