Book Insect Pests of Growing Tobacco in Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Pests of Growing Tobacco in Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Donald Sewall LaCroix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Pests of Growing Tobacco in Connecticut Insects are characterized as small animals having six legs in some period of their existence. Many of them go through four stages before their development is complete. The usual life cycle includes the egg, the larva, (caterpillar, maggot, worm grub) the pupa, and finally, the adult. In some forms of insect life the pupa stage is omitted. From the standpoint of the economic entomologist, insects may be divided into two groups: (1) Those that chew the tissues and (2) those that pierce the plant and suck the sap. The members of the first group have biting mouth parts and injure foliage by actually cutting Off small pieces of plant tissue and swallowing them. Obviously this class may be controlled by placing a stomach poison on the leaves so that it will be taken into the digestive system. It follows logically that insects of the second group must be held in check through some other kind of agency, since their food comes from within the plant. Hence the development of contact insecticides which kill by actual contact with the body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies on the Tobacco Crop of Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies on the Tobacco Crop of Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Edward H. Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Tobacco Crop of Connecticut Wrapper leaf tobacco, the only type of leaf raised in this state, is our largest cash crop. The government crop report for 1912 shows that tobacco was grown on 17,500 acres in Connecticut, that the yield was over twenty-nine million seven hundred and fifty thousand pounds and that the value on the farm was more than seven million one hundred thousand dollars, exceeding that of all cereals grown in Connecticut, of all the timothy and clover, and more than half as large as that of all the forage crops. This Station has been called upon to help growers in such ways as it could to improve the quality, increase the quantity and decrease the cost of growing the crop. The results of this work have been printed from time to time during the last twenty years, but the demand from within and without the state has exhausted the supply of bulletins and reports on the subject. As the call for them still continues, the following summary of our results has been prepared, with references to our original reports which can be found in libraries if more detailed study of any topic is desired and also to the valuable work which has been done elsewhere on tobacco of the cigar-wrapper type but which cannot be adequately described within the limits alloted to this bulletin. Download or read book Insects Attacking Squash Cucumber and Allied Plants in Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Wilton Everett Britton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Attacking Squash, Cucumber, and Allied Plants in Connecticut A paper on this subject was published in the report of this Station for 1908, page 805, but it has long been out of print. The present paper follows the plan Of the earlier one, but has been revised, enlarged, and wholly rewritten, and is published in this form so that the information can lie placed in the hands of truck crop growers throughout the state. For the past five years, cucurbitaceous plants have been grown each year at the Station farm at Mount Carmel for the purpose of studying the insects attacking them and methods of control. Consequently this paper is more than a compilation, and embodies the results of our own experiments and experience. Cucumbers, squashes, pumpkins and melons are grown rather extensively in Connecticut, and are attacked and Often severely injured by a number of insect pests. For the hasty identification of these insects the reader is referred to the following key revised from the earlier paper mentioned above. Book Tobacco Breeding in Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tobacco Breeding in Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Herbert Kendall Hayes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco Breeding in Connecticut Tobacco is a naturally close pollinated plant, although inter crossing through the agency of insects is probably somewhat frequent. Observations on the earlier blossoms of the flower head have convinced the writers that in many cases, at least, fertilization of the pistil has taken place before the blossom opens. In the later flowers the chances of intercrossing are much greater, as the blossom often opens before fertilization has been accomplished. It is evident that, as tobacco is a naturally close-fertilized plant, it must be vigorous under self fertilization, but some data on actual controlled inbreeding are given to further substantiate this belief. Darwin, in his classical experiments on inbreeding and cross breeding, found some types which were very vigorous when continually self-fertilized. Garner (1912) reports that a number of types have been inbred under bags for six or eight years by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture without any observable change in vigor or growth habit. A certain strain of our present Connecticut Cuban shade type, now grown on one of our large plantations, was inbred for a period of five years (1903-1908) by saving seed from individual plants under a paper bag. Since that time seed has been saved from desirable plants under cloth tent, the chances, however, seeming very small that seed so produced will be cross-fertilized. Instead of showing a loss of vigor due to self-fertilization, this type seems more Vigorous than in the early years of its introduction. The Sumatra type, which has been used as one of our parent varieties, has been inbred for a period of seven years, without giving any evidence of accumulated evil effects of inbreeding. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tobacco Beetle: An Important Pest in Tobacco Products Strong, heavy types of leaf tobacco ordinarily are not injured to any great extent unless stored for a long time. Leaf tobacco which is fire or smoke cured, such as that grown in the dark tobacco sections of Virginia or the black patch sections of Kentucky and Tennessee, is seldom seriously injured. This, perhaps, is due in part to the flavor or quality given the leaf by the smoke, which acts as a repellent, whereas the same type of leaf flue cured is readily attacked, although not to so great an extent as are lighter-bodied types of tobacco. These types, as well as all others, however, are more apt to suffer injury after the leaf has aged. The changes brought about by long storage of any tobacco seem to make it more suitable as food for the beetles. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chief Injurious Scale-Insects of Connecticut White powdery masses of wax 6 or 7 mm long are frequently seen on the under sides of leaves of the sugar maple. The waxy mass contains the mature female (often dead) and a large number of eggs. The young remain on the leaves until winter approaches, when they go into the crevices of the rough bark of the trunk and larger limbs, where they make a sort of nest by lining the crevices with wax. They remain here until May. The White oval cocoons of the males are often abundant on the bark. There are three generations each year. The insect has been collected at New Haven and South Norwalk, but doubt less occurs elsewhere in the state. Very little seems to be known about remedies for this insect, but probably kerosene emulsion will rove effective.
