Book Postharvest Pathology of Fresh Horticultural Produce

Download or read book Postharvest Pathology of Fresh Horticultural Produce written by Lluís Palou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal distribution of fresh horticultural products entails prolonging their freshness and nutritional quality as long as possible after harvest. A major limitation to their marketing is decay after harvest, which is caused primarily by fungal pathogens. Postharvest Pathology of Fresh Horticultural Produce provides a comprehensive resource of information about the biology and control of postharvest diseases of many fresh horticultural products, citing sources from appropriate literature of any age, rather than only the most recent. The etiology and symptoms of postharvest diseases and the biology of postharvest pathogens are reviewed by leading experts, who are familiar with many of world’s most popular fresh fruits and vegetables and the diseases that affect them. Key aspects related to infection and epidemiology, methods to minimize postharvest decay losses, including use of conventional fungicides and alternative management strategies, harvest and handling practices, and other aspects are described for the most significant temperate, subtropical, and tropical fruits as well as fruit-like vegetables and leafy vegetables. Features: Provides comprehensive academic and practical reviews of postharvest diseases of fresh fruits and vegetables Discusses the economic importance, etiology, and epidemiology of the most significant postharvest diseases Includes quality color plates that allow the practical identification of disease symptoms Explains practical postharvest disease management actions, including the use of conventional fungicides and alternatives to their use The authors summarize a massive quantity of published information, and often apply their own considerable practical experience to identify and interpret the most significant information. This book is a valuable and comprehensive resource for industry professionals, academics, educators, students, consultants, pest control advisors, regulatory personnel, and others interested in this subject.

Book Management of Insect Pests of Horticultural Crops

Download or read book Management of Insect Pests of Horticultural Crops written by Shivaji Patil and published by . This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pest damage can range from leaf damage that has no effect on the value of the fruit to severe damage that kills plants, significantly reduces crop yield or reduces the crop's market value. Pests may also cause contamination of fruit at harvest, reducing its marketability. Fruit pests include insects and mites, pathogens, nematodes, weeds and vertebrates. Effective pest management is based on thorough consideration of ecological and economic factors. The pest, its biology and the type of damage it causes are some of the factors that determine which control strategies and methods, if any, should be used. Pest management decisions largely determine the kind and amount of pesticides used. Pest management decisions represent a compromise between the value of the product, the extent of the pest damage, the relative effectiveness and cost of the control measures, and the impact on the environment. Pesticide application refers to the practical way in which pesticides, (including herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, or nematode control agents) are delivered to their biological targets (e.g. pest organism, crop or other plant). Public concern about the use of pesticides has highlighted the need to make this process as efficient as possible, in order to minimize their release into the environment and human exposure.

Book Identification and Management of Horticultural Pests

Download or read book Identification and Management of Horticultural Pests written by A. M. Ranjith and published by New India Publishing Agency. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written, primarily due to my own felt need to have a comprehensive text book on the pests of horticultural crops and methods to manage it, in the integrated way. Due to the widespread use of digital color photography and the good resolution that you get in even the basic level digital cameras, it is possible to get good photos. It was thus more of a need to have a text book to teach the UG and PG students, that this book was written. It was also necessary that any practicing field level worker like officers of the state department of Agriculture and commodity boards, and every practicing farmer with an ability to read English text book, should be guided into the basic facts about the pests of crops. It is most likely that most of the information is available in this book itself, as pest of some other crop. It will then be possible to read on the pest in that, and manage the pest effectively using the latest techniques available to the crop management expert.

Fruit industry of Kashmir valley is prone to insect attack and can flourish if the losses due to insect pests are kept under check. In order to obtain optimal production of horticulture fruits crops and compete at global level in terms of productivity, knowledge about insect pests, their biology, bionomics and management is of paramount importance. This information could be best used to devise suitable management practices so that insect pests are controlled before they could cause severe infestation and subsequent loss of quality produce. This book encompasses insect pests of temperate fruit crops and due emphasis has been given on their description, general appearance, nature of damage and management. The book has presented an account of all the temperate horticultural insect pests of the world. This book has been written with the primary aim of furnishing information about life cycle and damage of insect pests to teachers, students and all other stakeholders.

Book Production Practices and Quality Assessment of Food Crops

Download or read book Production Practices and Quality Assessment of Food Crops written by Ramdane Dris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can not talk about commodity production without building up all the operations after harvest. It is possible to market the products just after harvest, but it is only possible in small quantities. Postharvest handling is the ultimate stage in the process of producing quality fresh fruits and vegetables, getting these unique packages of water (fresh commodities) to the supper table. Fresh fruits and vegetables are succeptible to a number of postharvest disease and disorders and the postharvest operations are predominately aimed at maintaining harvest quality. Every step in the handling chain can influence the extent of disease and quality of the stored product. From planting to consumption, there are many opportu- ties for bacteria, viruses, and parasites to contaminate produce or nutrient deficiency level causing physiological disorders. Most of the storage rots are diseases that have originated in the field and have carried over onto commodities after harvest. Physiological disorders also arise from poor handling between harvest, storage and marketing. Treatments have a direct effect on inactivating or outright killing germinating spores, thus minimising rots. Prestorage treatment appears to be a promising method of postharvest control of decay. Pre-or-postharvest treatments of commodities are considered as potentiel alternatives for reducing the incidence of diseases, disorders, desinfestation of quarantine pests and for preserving food quality. Postharvest treatments lead to an alteration of gene expression and fruit ripening can sometimes be either delayed or disrupted.
