Download or read book Life in Ponds and Streams Classic Reprint written by William S. Furneaux and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Ponds and Streams To a lover of Nature. All forms of life are interesting. But so numerous and varied are those forms that few students are able to give much time to the pursuit of more than one or two branches Of Natural History. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that most young naturalists devote their energies to the study of the more conspicuous and attractive creatures Of Earth. Thus it comes to pass that a certain few Of the orders Of Insects have quite an army of enthusiastic students, that the beautifully marked and exquisitely formed shells of our marine Molluscs are eagerly sought after, and that our feathered friends and their eggs are well known and prized by many lovers of wild country life; while the study of the varied living forms inhabiting ponds and streams, most of which are not to be Obtained Without more or less careful searching for them in their haunts, has but comparatively few devotees. But there is no reason whatever why the study of fresh water life should not be quite as fascinating and instructive to even the youngest naturalist as that of the more popular branches we have specified above, and the chief reason why the weedy pond and the winding stream are so generally neglected is probably that our young naturalists have not had their attention sufficiently directed to the world of interest that awaits them if they will pursue their investiga tions of aquatic life with the same ardour that the collecting of butterflies or birds' eggs generally excites. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Life, Its Why and Wherefore Having from time to time written articles on insect life for journals and lectured upon the lives and habits of various small creatures, I have been struck with the great interest shown by the public, and this despite the very large number of books already published upon Such subjects. To A recent investigation among the shelves a. Of one of our largest libraries. Has opened my eyes as to the reason of so much rm ignorance existing, with such a mass of Q knowledge obtainable It is that so many 3 entomological experts use terms which Z are totally incomprehensible to the uninitiated, while, on the other hand, some of the most pleasing little books upon the subject are written for children, in childish language, or mixed up with a mass of information upon trees, flowers, shrubs, etc., etc. I am venturing in these brief pages to place in the hands of farmers, gardeners and others interested, a few. Download or read book The Natural History of Aquatic Insects Classic Reprint written by L. C. Miall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Aquatic Insects The conditions of life in fresh waters are materi ally different from those afforded by the sea. The chemical difference between fresh and salt waters is of small importance in itself - so small that many animals have been able to adapt themselves gradually to a change from one to the other. A degree of saltness far greater than that of sea-water is perfectly compatible with animal life, as is shown by the fact that Crustacea and Insects are often found quite at home in brine-pits and vats. There are even a few animals, like the Salmon, which can pass sud denly from fresh water to salt, or from salt to fresh. Thanks to their usually imposing size to their severe and irreproachably glossy garb to their short, stout, thickset Shape to the quaint ornamentation either of their brow or, also, of their thorax, they cut an excellent figure in the collector's boxes, especially when to our own species, oftenest of an ebon black, we add a few tropical species ashing with gleams of gold and ruddy copper. Download or read book A Walk around the Pond written by Gilbert Waldbauer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A water strider darts across a pond, its feet dimpling the surface tension; a giant water bug dives below, carrying his mate’s eggs on his back; hidden among plant roots on the silty bottom, a dragonfly larva stalks unwary minnows. Barely skimming the surface, in the air above the pond, swarm mayflies with diaphanous wings. Take this walk around the pond with Gilbert Waldbauer and discover the most amazingly diverse inhabitants of the freshwater world. In his hallmark companionable style, Waldbauer introduces us to the aquatic insects that have colonized ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers, especially those in North America. Along the way we learn about the diverse forms these arthropods take, as well as their remarkable modes of life—how they have radiated into every imaginable niche in the water environment, and how they cope with the challenges such an environment poses to respiration, vision, thermoregulation, and reproduction. We encounter the caddis fly larva building its protective case and camouflaging it with stream detritus; green darner dragonflies mating midair in an acrobatic wheel formation; ants that have adapted to the tiny water environment within a pitcher plant; and insects whose adaptations to the aquatic lifestyle are furnishing biomaterials engineers with ideas for future applications in industry and consumer goods. While learning about the evolution, natural history, and ecology of these insects, readers also discover more than a little about the scientists who study them.

Book American Trout Stream Insects

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Trout-Stream Insects: A Guide to Angling Flies and Other Aquatic Insects Alluring to Trout Inquiries from various State entomologists failed to locate a single volume or treatise on trout-stream insects. Likewise, diligent search in libraries and large bookstores proved futile. This shows the present volume to be the first and only work on this most necessary adjunct to the angler's craft. It is curious that while our Government documents re lating to pisciculture are equal to, if not in advance of, those of European countries, there, particularlv in England and France, research in the field of entomology has kept pace with other branches of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life-Story of Insects Among the manifold operations of living creatures few have more strongly impressed the casual observer or more deeply interested the thoughtful student than the transformations of insects. The schoolboy watches the tiny green caterpillars hatched from eggs laid on a cabbage leaf by the common white butterfly, or maybe rears successfully a batch of silkworms through the changes and chances of their lives, while the naturalist questions yet again the how and 'why of these common though wondrous life-stories, as he seeks to trace their course more fully than his predecessors knew. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Insect Life: Second Series Summer and Autumn IN studying insects it is very desirable to be able to keep them under observation from day to day. For this purpose various sorts of breeding cages are commonly employed. A breeding cage is simply a closed vessel in which a caterpillar or other insect may be kept alive and fed, so that it will go through the cycle of its changes where it can be seen. A Simple form of such a cage consists of a lantern globe or lamp chimney resting upon a wide, Shallow dish, in which sand or earth to a depth of two or three inches has been placed. When it is to be used for large caterpillars a small glass vial nearly full of water is set down in the sand in the middle of the space, with the top of the vial projecting somewhat above the surface. In this vial a leaf or branch of the food plant is placed. The cage is now ready for the caterpillar, which will find its food kept fresh for two or three days by the water in the vial. Then a new leaf or branch may be exchanged for the old one. The open top of the lamp chimney is to be kept covered with a small piece of mosquito netting, held'in place by a rubber band. For the lower dish a flowerpot or a flower pot saucer serves the purpose very well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Among the Insects IF my young friends will peruse this book with half the pleasure I enjoyed whilst gathering the facts which it relates, I Shall be abundantly repaid for the labor expended in writing it. The air and fields are so full of beautiful and sprightly things of life that I shall not fail to confer a favor upon intelligent and inquisitive boys and girls if I succeed in inspiring them with an interest in the study of insect-life. The objects embraced in this study are within the reach of every one. They intrude themselves into our presence uncalled, and at times are most unwelcome. For this reason they are despised, and their structure, instincts and domestic habits are unstudied. But, like all the works of God, they display his wisdom and goodness, and are, on this account, worthy of the profoundest study.
