Book The Locked Ward

Download or read book The Locked Ward written by Dennis O'Donnell and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary account of life behind the locked doors of a secure psychiatric ward from a nurse who worked there for seven years. Dennis O'Donnell started work as an orderly in the Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit of a large hospital in Scotland in 2000. In his daily life he encountered fear, violence and despair but also a considerable amount of care and compassion. Recounting the stories of the patients he worked with, and those of his colleagues on the ward, here he examines major mental health conditions, methods of treatment - medication, how religion, sex, wealth, health and drugs can bear influence on mental health, the prevailing attitudes to psychiatric illness, the authorities, the professionals & society. What emerges is a document of humanity and humour, a remarkable memoir that sheds light on a world that still remains largely unknown. 'This is a superb study of people whose minds have gone wrong, and the art of caring for them' Evening Standard

Book A Lucky Irish Lad

Download or read book A Lucky Irish Lad written by Kevin O'Hara and published by Forge Books. This book was released on 2010-03-22 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin O'Hara recreates his boyhood with these wonderful stories of growing up in Massachusetts in the 1950s and 60s as one of eight children. His parents, born in Ireland, came to this country for their children's sake. His family struggled against grinding poverty but they never gave up and never lost their faith that God had a plan for them. Kevin learned the lessons of making do and making things last, and what the true riches of the world are: good health and the love of a united family. All these lessons grounded him as he reached adulthood...and was sent off to fight in wilds of Vietnam as a reluctant solider. This book will tug at your heart and make you cry tears of both sorrow and joy. It is a story about the Irish-American experience but it is much more--it's the story of a generation growing up in the shadow of the Second World War and the start of a new age of hope and promise, a time when people believed that anything was possible as long as you dared to dream and had faith in yourself. And a little Irish luck couldn't hurt either. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: One man, not sure where his next job would come from, is employed by God where he will compassionately care for society's least fortunate--the mentally or emotionally ill, when they transition into the psychiatric hospital system. I am that man. This is my story of working in the psychiatric system, usually in a hospital setting. This volume is a telling of twenty-nine years of caring for and about people who, but for the grace of God, could be me or my family. It is a telling of surviving and thriving in often difficult circumstances. Starting as a mental health worker in 1988, I received my registered nurse license in 1993 and continued as a psychiatric nurse until I ended compensated employment in 2017. This is a telling of covering the naked and treating the self-inflicted wounds of the bloody. The whys and logics of many of the disorders encountered are addressed in caring and often wry commentary. The actual workings of the psychiatric hospital, and my observations of that environment are presented. Life as it is actually lived, often at its most visceral level, is on display here. I frequently make reference to a person's WIIFM (what's in it for me) as a dominant factor motivating the behavior of people, both the patients and the hospital staff. I do not spare myself when addressing WIIFM as a behavior motivator. There is caring for wounded hearts and how to manage those whose hearts are beyond either wounding or caring. The legalities, as well as the realities, of how the mental health system works and the protections for those who are a danger to themselves or others or unable to care for themselves are presented here, and I deal with the realities of psychiatric hospitalization and dispel the nonsense of a seventy-two-hour psychiatric hold. There is triumph and tragedy presented here in a uniquely engaging style by a true storyteller.

Book Last of the Donkey Pilgrims

Download or read book Last of the Donkey Pilgrims written by Kevin O'Hara and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin O'Hara's journey of self-discovery begins as a mad lark: who in their right mind would try to circle the entire coastline of Ireland on foot—and with a donkey and cart no less? But Kevin had promised his homesick Irish mother that he would explore the whole of the Old Country and bring back the sights and the stories to their home in Massachusetts. Determined to reach his grandmother's village by Christmas Eve, Kevin and his stubborn but endearing donkey, Missie, set off on 1800-mile trek along the entire jagged coast of a divided Ireland. Their rollicking adventure takes them over mountains and dales, through smoky cities and sleepy villages, and into the farmhouses and hearts of Ireland's greatest resource—its people. Along the way, Kevin would meet incredible characters, experience Ireland in all of its glory, and explore not only his Irish past, but find his future self. “One of the finest books about contemporary Ireland ever written...In a style evocative of Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, O'Hara writes memorably of his most unusual way of touring his ancestral home of Ireland.” —Library Journal At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: Mark and Giulia's life together began as a storybook romance. They fell in love at eighteen, married at twenty-four, and were living their dream life in San Francisco. When Giulia was twenty-seven, she suffered a terrifying and unexpected psychotic break that landed her in the psych ward for nearly a month. One day she was vibrant and well-adjusted; the next she was delusional and suicidal, convinced that she was the devil and that her loved ones were not safe. All she wanted was to die. Eventually, Giulia fully recovered, and the couple had a son. But, soon after Jonas was born, Giulia had another breakdown, and then a third a few years after that. pushed to the edge of the abyss, everything the couple had once taken for granted was upended. A story of the fragility of the mind, and the tenacity of the human spirit, My Lovely Wife is, above all, a love story that raises profound questions: How do we care for the people we love? What and who do we live for? Breathtaking in its candor, radiant with compassion, and written with dazzling lyricism, Lukach's is an intensely personal odyssey through the harrowing years of his wife's mental illness, anchored by an abiding devotion to family that will affirm readers' faith in the power of love.

Book Mental Nurses Training Manual

Download or read book Mental Nurses Training Manual written by David 'Khyber' Close and published by BookPOD. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back at the end of the 1970s, three hundred copies of Neglect & Violence – Mental Nurse’s Training Manual were released by Wombat Printing NL to friends and the nurse’s underground. Forty plus years later it is now released to the public with little danger of litigation regarding libel or defamation. The back-cover blurb for MENTAL NURSES TRAINING MANUAL then had it that: ‘An ex-psychiatric nurse recalls his experiences after reporting a bashing and drinking on duty to his superiors. He exposes a cover-up by the hospital authorities and the State government bureaucracy then known as the Mental Health Authority. His report details murder and suicide cases and hints at widespread cruelty and indifference. His memories and impressions of the people he met working at a Melbourne mental hospital adds colour to a subject which bears thinking about. The author’s futile exploits as a candidate in the 1973 Victorian state election makes amusing and / or alarming reading, while his analysis of shortcomings in psychiatric practice might stimulate a new deal for the bewildered victims of our dog-eat-dog civilization…” “A must for all the up and coming maniacs.” – Gough Whitelamb in the Daylesford Gazette. “Lifts the lid off the sanity business.” – Clyde Pucker in the Yea Times. “Reading this book didn’t relieve my obsessive-compulsive-neurosis or my ethical dilemmas, but it gave me the pleasant feeling that I am not alone in this world with my belief in the prefectability of mankind through the exercise of hope fertilized by integrity.” – Malcolm Howard in the West Wyalong Whinger. “Whistle-blowing anti-psychiatry still resonates today.” Phil Saddams in the Rupert Warduck Stable
