Book Environmental Pollution and the Media

Download or read book Environmental Pollution and the Media written by Glenn D. Hook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a theoretically informed empirical investigation of national media reporting and political discourse on environmental issues in Australia, China and Japan. It illuminates the risks, harms and responsibilities associated with climate change through an analysis of pollution, adopting an interdisciplinary approach drawing on both the social sciences and humanities. A particular strength of the work is the detailed analysis of the data using a range of both quantitative and qualitative techniques, enabling the authors to reveal in rich and compelling detail the complex relationship between risk and responsibility in the climate change discourse. The case studies of Australia, China and Japan are set in the current literature as well as in the historical context of climate change in these three countries. The analysis of the media discourse on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia demonstrates how the mining of coal for overseas markets has led to devastating harm to the life of the reef. A critical discussion of the Chinese documentary, Under the Dome, shows how this medium has played a crucial role in building awareness of the harm from atmospheric pollution among the citizens, shaping attitudes and promoting action. The first case study of Japan elucidates how cross-border atmospheric pollution from China forges a chain of responsibility for responding to climate change, running from the state to society. The other case study of Japan demonstrates how ‘smart cities’ have emerged as a way to mitigate the risks and harms of climate change. The Conclusion draws together the similarities and differences in how climate change is addressed in the three countries. In all, Environmental Pollution and the Media: Political Discourses of Risk and Responsibility in Australia, China and Japan uncovers the dynamics of the triadic relationship among risk, harm and climate change in Australia, China and Japan. By so doing, the book makes an original and timely contribution to understanding comparative media, discourse and political debates on climate change.

Book Introduction to Environmental Law

Download or read book Introduction to Environmental Law written by Jeffrey G. Miller and published by Environmental Law Institute. This book was released on 2008 with total page 985 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of water pollution control regulation is a study of statutes and their administration. This casebook explores water pollution and the federal statute chiefly designed to control it, the Clean Water Act, and examines how water pollution is addressed, first by the common law and then by statute. An introduction provides the student with an understanding of what constitutes water pollution, where it originates, and how it can be controlled. These materials were originally designed for the introductory course in environmental regulation/environmental law at Pace Law School. A Teachers Manual includes exercises that teach students advanced legal research, familiarity with administrative law mechanisms, and the ability to integrate what they have learned about the Clean Water Act.

Book An Introduction to Pollution Science

Download or read book An Introduction to Pollution Science written by R M Harrison and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding pollution, its behaviour and impact is becoming increasingly important, as new technologies and legislation continually lower the tolerable levels of pollutants released into the environment. Introduction to Pollution Science draws upon sections of the authors' previous text (Understanding our Environment) and reflects the growing trend of a more sophisticated approach to teaching environmental science at university. This new revised book discusses the basics of environmental pollution drawing upon chemistry, physics and biological sciences. The book, written by leading experts in the field, covers topics including pollution in the atmosphere, the world's waters and soil and land contamination. Subsequent sections discuss methods of investigating the environment, the impact of pollution on human health and ecological systems and institutional mechanisms for pollution management. Each section includes worked examples and questions and is aimed at undergraduates studying environmental science, but will also prove of value to others seeking knowledge of the field.
