Download or read book Aesthetic Concepts written by Emily Brady and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetic Concepts is an exploration of key topics in contemporary aesthetics that arise from the seminal work of Frank Sibley (1923-1996). Sibley developed a distinctive aesthetic theory through a number of papers published between 1955 and 1995 (a selection of which, entitled Approach toAesthetics, is also published by OUP). Sibley's theory is grounded in the important and influential distinction he made between aesthetic and non-aesthetic concepts in his ground-breaking paper, 'Aesthetic Concepts'. Thirteen specially written essays by British and American philosophical aestheticians bring Sibley's insight into a contemporary framework, exploring the ways his ideas give rise to important new discussion about issues in aesthetics that greatly interested him. These include: the differences andrelationships between aesthetic concepts and other types of concepts, aesthetic realism and objectivity, methods of aesthetic evaluation in practice and in theory, the boundaries of aesthetics, and aesthetics of nature versus aesthetics of art. This collection will be of interest to scholars inphilosophy, art theory, and art criticism.

Book The A to Z of Aesthetics

  • Author : Dabney Townsend
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0810875810
  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book The A to Z of Aesthetics written by Dabney Townsend and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetics is not a "factual" discipline; there are no aesthetic facts. The word itself is derived from the Greek word for "feeling" and the discipline arises because of the need to find a place for the passions within epistemology--the branch of philosophy that investigates our beliefs. Aesthetics is more than just the study of beauty; it is a study of that which appeals to our senses, most often in connection with the classification, analysis, appreciation, and understanding of art. The A to Z of Aesthetics covers its history from Classical Greece to the present, including entries on non-western aesthetics. The book contains a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the main concepts, terminology, important persons (philosophers, critics, and artists), and the rules and criteria we apply in making judgments on art. By providing concise information on aesthetics, this dictionary is not only accessible to students, but it provides details and facts to specialists in the field.

Book The Philosophical Foundations of Soviet Aesthetics

Download or read book The Philosophical Foundations of Soviet Aesthetics written by Edward M. Swiderski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 0. 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEMATIC This study is devoted to an examination of a concept of crucial significance for Soviet aesthetics - the concept of the aesthetic (esteticeskoe). Soviet aestheticians have for some time already been trying to design a concept of the aesthetic that would satisfy, on the one hand, the requirements of aesthe tic phenomena, and, on the other hand, the principles of the Marxist-Leninist world view. The first part of this work shows how the concept of the aesthetic has been and continues to be problematic for Soviet aestheticians. This task is carried out by dwelling, first of all, on the controversies among Soviet aesthe ticians concerning meta-aesthetic issues, viz, the nature and scope of aesthetics as well as its place among other philosophical and non-philosophical disci plines. A particularly clear view of the problems that have traditionally pre occupied Soviet aestheticians is provided by an examination of what they standardly call the 'method of aesthetics', where 'method' is understood in the sense of an explanatory framework rather than in the strict logico-scien tific sense of the term. This discussion will provide the occasion to pass in review the main periods of Soviet aesthetics and the characteristic aspects of each. The chapter on the sources of contemporary Marxist-Leninist aesthetics brings into relief the lack of a homogeneous tradition in the question of the nature of the aesthetic and other related problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines not only the objects and processes that make up the artworlds of human history, but also the social and cultural circumstances, the historicised contexts that bring about their making, frame their functioning, inform their properties and influence their effects, both at the time of their creation and throughout their subsequent biographies. In the short span that “art” has played a part in human life, one may conceive of time as a social river, with a strong current towards the capricious mainstream, and eddies and quiet pools near the banks. The current will flow faster in spate and slower in drought. But it will be forever in motion. It will be unpredictable. Nothing will stop its inexorable force. Art runs in that social river, subject to the flow and chance of time.

Book The Theory of Criticism

Download or read book The Theory of Criticism written by Raman Selden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into five parts and covers: representation; subjectivity; form, structure and system; history and society; morality, class and ideology. Each part contains several thematic sections in which extracts from different writers and periods are juxtaposed. The study of literary theory has tended to concentrate on very recent developments. This volume, however, establishes both a sense of the continuities from Plato to the present day as well as the discontinuities. These are presented through comparisons and contrasts across the entire field of critical history.
