Book Innovation in Samuel Beckett s Fiction

Download or read book Innovation in Samuel Beckett s Fiction written by Rubin Rabinovitz and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers often find Beckett's fiction forbidding because he abandons conventional methods and introduces new formal devices. In Innovation in Samuel Beckett's Fiction Rubin Rabinovitz, a pre-eminent Beckett scholar, provides comprehensive descriptions of those devices, explains how they are used, and clarifies how they contribute to Beckett's underlying ideas. As an example, Rabinovitz points out that more than 1,000 significant elements recur in Beckett's trilogy of novels, Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable. These emphasize elusive ideas, such as the mysterious affinities of thought linking the protagonists in these works or suggestions that different characters represent aspects of a single embryonic persona who is never explicitly described. Rabinovitz also discusses Beckett's use of narrative, chronology, setting, characterization, allusions, mythic parallels, and figurative language.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays the first volume in the Dialogue series brings together new and experienced scholars to present innovative critical approaches to Samuel Beckett s play Endgame. These essays broach a broad range of topics, many of which are inherently controversial and have generated significant levels of debate in the past. Critical readings of the play in relation to music, metaphysics, intertextuality, and time are counterpointed by essays that consider the nature of performance, the history of the theater and the music hall, Beckett s attitudes to directing his play, and his responses to other directors. This collection will be of special interest to Beckett scholars, to students of literature and drama, and to drama theorists and practitioners.

Book Transdisciplinary Beckett

Download or read book Transdisciplinary Beckett written by Lucy Jeffery and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph to analyse Beckett’s use of the visual arts, music, and broadcasting media through a transdisciplinary approach. It considers how Beckett’s complex and varied use of art, music, and media in a selection of his novels, radio plays, teleplays, and later short prose informs his creative process. Investigating specific instances where Beckett’s writing adopts musical or visual structures, Lucy Jeffery identifies instances of Beckett’s transdisciplinarity and considers how this approach to writing facilitates ways of expressing familiar Beckettian themes of abstraction, ambiguity, longing, and endlessness. With case studies spanning forty years, she evaluates Beckett’s stylistic shifts in relation to the cultural context, particularly the technological advancements and artistic movements, during which they were written. With new examples from Beckett’s notebooks, critical essays, and letters, Transdisciplinary Beckett evidences how the drastic changes that took place in the visual arts and in musical composition influenced Beckett and, in turn, were influenced by him. Transdisciplinary Beckett situates Beckett as a key figure not just in the literary marketplace but also in the fields of music, art, and broadcasting.

Book Absurdity in Samuel Becketts Waiting for Godot

Download or read book Absurdity in Samuel Becketts Waiting for Godot written by Lea Lorena Jerns and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Innovative Twentieth-Century Theatre, language: English, abstract: In what way does Samuel Beckett create absurdity in his play "Waiting for Godot" and what is it that makes the “game” with the absurdity so unique and therefore Samuel Beckett’s play to one of the most authentic representatives of the "Theatre of the Absurd"? Samuel Beckett was born in 1906 in Dublin and died in 1989 in Paris. He was an Anglo-Irish author and wrote in French as well as in English. Furthermore, he wrote poems and novels and worked as a theatre director. Samuel Beckett is considered the master of absurdity. (cf. Schwanitz 323) The central theme in his works is the meaninglessness of the human existence. (cf. Wunderlich) He was friends with James Joyce and was impressed by Joyce’s “stream of consciousness” – a special literary method that James Joyce used. The idea of the “stream of consciousness” is an on-going process of associating things, i.e. the idea of getting inside into the uncontrolled process of thinking of a person. Waiting for Godot (1954) is Beckett’s translation of his own original French version that is called "En attendant Godot" (1952). In 1969 he received the Nobel Price for Literature, but he did not accept the price because people thought "Waiting for Godot" would be a potential religious play. According to Beckett that was wrong and that is why he decided to refuse the price. Finally, Samuel Beckett was the most unique, singular writer in English/French since 1945.

Book Ten Ways of Thinking About Samuel Beckett

Download or read book Ten Ways of Thinking About Samuel Beckett written by Enoch Brater and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This collection of essays by renowned Beckett scholar Enoch Brater offers a delightfully original, playful and intriguing series of approaches to Beckett's drama, fiction and poetry. Beginning with a chapter entitled 'Things to Ponder While Waiting for Godot', each essay deftly illuminates aspects of Beckett's thinking and craft, making astute and often surprising discoveries along the way. In a series of beguiling discussions such as 'From Dada to Didi: Beckett and the Art of His Century', 'Beckett's Devious Interventions, or Fun with Cube Roots' and 'The Seated Figure on Beckett's Stage', Brater proves the perfect companion and commentator on Beckett's work, helping readers to approach it with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of the author's unique aesthetic. 'An eloquent, witty and erudite collection of essays that illuminates Beckett's drama and prose fiction from a number of complementary perspectives. Brater's precise explication of the interwoven tropes of language and mise-en-scène is combined with a fine grasp of the overarching structure of work ... to create a rich and suggestive series of reflections on Beckett's aesthetics.' - Robert Gordon, Professor of Drama, Goldsmiths, University of London

Book Samuel Beckett s Legacies in American Fiction

Download or read book Samuel Beckett s Legacies in American Fiction written by James Baxter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Beckett’s Legacies in American Fiction provides an overdue investigation into Beckett’s rich influences over American writing. Through in-depth readings of postmodern authors such as Robert Coover, Donald Barthelme, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Paul Auster and Lydia Davis, this book situates Beckett’s post-war writing of exhaustion and generation in relation to the emergence of an explosive American avant-garde. In turn, this study provides a valuable insight into the practical realities of Beckett’s dissemination in America, following the author’s long-standing relationship with the countercultural magazine Evergreen Review and its dramatic role in redrawing the possibilities of American culture in the 1960s. While Beckett would be largely removed from his American context, this book follows his vigorous, albeit sometimes awkward, reception alongside the authors and institutions central to shaping his legacies in 20th and 21st century America.
