Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANGUISH OF THE INNOCENT is a story about how innocent people suffer because of the guilty and the extent some would go to defend them. How can the vengeful actions of one person cause so much pain and anguish to so many innocent people? How could Joshua and Louisa Posey’s lives of peace and tranquility be so greatly effected by one man? Wade Posey and John Mayo see the pain caused by this single act of revenge and take it upon themselves to prove the innocence of their friend, Joshua Posey. Mattie Posey Mayo is caught up in helping protect her dearest friends. She takes extreme measures and is put in danger in her efforts to keep them from the clutches of the Ku Klux Klan. How could the course of Billy Richard’s entire future be so drastically changed by this same action? His grief over the death of his father and the possibility of the death of an innocent man causes him to react in ways that would change his life forever. John Mayo compromises his integrity and goes to great lengths to help him. Some said it all started at the wedding of Mattie Posey and John Mayo - but I really think it started long before then. I suppose Red Sawyer had it in his heart to lash out at some black man, some black family - any black family - it was just that Louisa Posey exerted a bit of independence which Red interpreted as defiance. Red hated defiance, which was difficult to understand since he defied much of the social decorum of his time. He had no idea how his one act of revenge would affect so many innocent people in Philadelphia, Mississippi or how the people he cared about most would suffer from one cowardly act. He should have known, but revenge dominated his thoughts, determined his actions and set the course of a lot of lives. VENGEANCE IS MINE; I WILL REPAY, SAITH THE LORD. (The Bible - Romans 12:19b)

Book Bargains with Fate

Download or read book Bargains with Fate written by Maria Jarosz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enduring appeal of Shakespeare's works derives largely from the fact that they contain brilliantly drawn characters. Interpretations of these characters are products of changing modes of thought, and thus past explanations of their behavior, including Shakespeare's, no longer satisfy us. In this work, Bernard J. Paris, an eminent Shakespearean scholar, shows how Shakespeare endowed his tragic heroes with enduring human qualities that have made them relevant to people of later eras.Bargains with Fate employs a psychoanalytic approach inspired by the theories of Karen Horney to analyze Shakespeare's four major tragedies and the personality that can be inferred from all of his works. This compelling study first examines the tragedies as dramas about individuals with conflicts like our own who are in a state of crisis due to the breakdown of their bargains with fate, a belief that they can magically control their destinies by living up to the dictates of their defensive strategies.Filled with bold hypotheses supported by carefully detailed accounts, this innovative study is a resource for students and scholars of Shakespeare, and for those interested in literature as a source of psychological insight. The author's combination of literary and psychoanalytic perspectives guides us to a humane understanding of Shakespeare and his protagonists, and, in turn, to a more profound knowledge of ourselves and human behavior.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Restoration and Early Eighteenth Century Drama

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Restoration and Early Eighteenth Century Drama written by J. Douglas Canfield and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 2001 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first new full-scale anthology of Restoration and eighteenth-century drama in over sixty years. Concentrating on plays from the heyday of 1660-1737, it focuses especially on Restoration drama proper (1660-1688) and Revolution drama (1689-1714), with a smaller selection of plays from the early Georgian period (1715-1737) and a glimpse at the later Georgian period’s “laughing comedy” (1770s and 80s). It includes nine sub-genres (heroic romance, political tragedy, personal tragedy, tragicomic romance, social comedy, subversive comedy, corrective satire, menippean satire, and laughing comedy), with the preponderance of exposure given to the jewel of this theatre, its comedy. The core canonical plays from the era—from Dryden’s All for Love and Behn’s The Rover to Congreve’s The Way of the World and Sheridan’s School for Scandal—are all here, but so are a remarkably wide range of non-canonical works. There are many more plays by women than in any previous general anthology of drama of the period. Also included are a number of works from the neglected 1660s, whose comedies feature delightful, subversive, levelling folk elements. In all there are forty-one plays; each is fully annotated and prefaced with an historical introduction. Also included are a general introduction, head-notes for each genre, and a glossary.

Book Three Restoration Comedies

Download or read book Three Restoration Comedies written by George Etherege and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-11-24 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the restoration of King Charles II to the British throne in 1660, dramatists experienced new freedom in an age that broke from the strict morality of puritan rule and in which elegance and wit became the chief virtues. Irreverent, licentious and cynical, the three plays collected here hold up a mirror to this dazzling era and satirize the gulf between appearances and reality. In Etherege's The Man of Mode (1676), the womanizing Dorimant meets his match when he falls in love with the unpretentious Harriet, while Wycherley's The Country Wife (c. 1675) depicts the rakish Horner who fakes impotence to fool trusting husbands into giving him easy access to their wives. And in Congreve's Love for Love (1695), the extravagant Valentine can only win his beloved Angelica if he loses his inheritance.

Book The Country Wife

Download or read book The Country Wife written by William Wycherley and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'He's a fool that marries, but he's a greater fool that does not marry a fool.' This bawdy, hilarious, subversive and wickedly satirical drama pokes fun at the humourless, the jealous, and the adulterous alike. It features a country wife, Margery, whose husband believes she is too naïve to cuckold him; and an anti-hero, Horner, who pretends to be impotent in order to have unrestrained access to the women keen on 'the sport'. A number of licentious and hypocritical women request Horner's services – the country wife among them. The Country Wife has provoked powerfully mixed reactions over the years. The seventeenth century libertine king Charles II saw it twice, and is said to have joined the 'dance of the cuckolds' at the end of one performance; the eighteenth century actor-playwright David Garrick declared it 'the most licentious play in the English language'; the Victorian Macaulay compared it to a skunk, because it was 'too filthy to handle and too noisome even to approach'. Twentieth century productions heralded it a Restoration masterpiece. Sexually frank, and as ready to criticise marriage as infidelity, the virtuosity, linguistic energy, brilliant wit, naughtiness and complexity of this ribald play have made it a staple of the modern stage. This student edition contains a lengthy, entirely new introduction, by leading scholar, Tiffany Stern, with a background on the author, structure, characters, genre, themes, original staging and performance history, as well as an updated bibliography and a fully annotated version of the playtext.
