Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From “the poet laureate of medicine" (The New York Times) and the author of the classic The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat comes a fascinating exploration of the remarkable, unpredictable ways that our brains cope with the loss of sight by finding rich new forms of perception. “Elaborate and gorgeously detailed.... Again and again, Sacks invites readers to imagine their way into minds unlike their own, encouraging a radical form of empathy.” —Los Angeles Times With compassion and insight, Dr. Oliver Sacks again illuminates the mysteries of the brain by introducing us to some remarkable characters, including Pat, who remains a vivacious communicator despite the stroke that deprives her of speech, and Howard, a novelist who loses the ability to read. Sacks investigates those who can see perfectly well but are unable to recognize faces, even those of their own children. He describes totally blind people who navigate by touch and smell; and others who, ironically, become hyper-visual. Finally, he recounts his own battle with an eye tumor and the strange visual symptoms it caused. As he has done in classics like The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat and Awakenings, Dr. Sacks shows us that medicine is both an art and a science, and that our ability to imagine what it is to see with another person's mind is what makes us truly human.

Book Human Dimension and Interior Space

Download or read book Human Dimension and Interior Space written by Julius Panero and published by Watson-Guptill. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of human body measurements on a comparative basis is known as anthropometrics. Its applicability to the design process is seen in the physical fit, or interface, between the human body and the various components of interior space. Human Dimension and Interior Space is the first major anthropometrically based reference book of design standards for use by all those involved with the physical planning and detailing of interiors, including interior designers, architects, furniture designers, builders, industrial designers, and students of design. The use of anthropometric data, although no substitute for good design or sound professional judgment should be viewed as one of the many tools required in the design process. This comprehensive overview of anthropometrics consists of three parts. The first part deals with the theory and application of anthropometrics and includes a special section dealing with physically disabled and elderly people. It provides the designer with the fundamentals of anthropometrics and a basic understanding of how interior design standards are established. The second part contains easy-to-read, illustrated anthropometric tables, which provide the most current data available on human body size, organized by age and percentile groupings. Also included is data relative to the range of joint motion and body sizes of children. The third part contains hundreds of dimensioned drawings, illustrating in plan and section the proper anthropometrically based relationship between user and space. The types of spaces range from residential and commercial to recreational and institutional, and all dimensions include metric conversions. In the Epilogue, the authors challenge the interior design profession, the building industry, and the furniture manufacturer to seriously explore the problem of adjustability in design. They expose the fallacy of designing to accommodate the so-called average man, who, in fact, does not exist. Using government data, including studies prepared by Dr. Howard Stoudt, Dr. Albert Damon, and Dr. Ross McFarland, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Jean Roberts of the U.S. Public Health Service, Panero and Zelnik have devised a system of interior design reference standards, easily understood through a series of charts and situation drawings. With Human Dimension and Interior Space, these standards are now accessible to all designers of interior environments.

Book The Ancient Book of Jasher

Download or read book The Ancient Book of Jasher written by A Bible Book and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Jasher is twice mentioned in the Bible. In order to distinguish this work from the Pseudo-Jasher, it carries the title "The Ancient Book of Jasher". The transcript has been carried out faithfully except for a number of minor amendments. It is a shame that in most publications of the Book of Jasher, the supportive documents that prove its origin are missing, as if evidence that testifies to its veracity is difficult to bear. But here they are. What is new, is a division in sections, which makes easy reading. You'll find a good Analytical Index, and that's always helpful. The prelimenary remarks, made by the present publisher, gives a better feel about the authenticity of this truly amazing book that, by the way, is still being printed in the original Hebrew, in a mode of writing that carries the patina of its age.

Book Literature on the Move

Book excerpt: Literature on the Move formulates a new aesthetics for the altered conditions and challenges of the new century. The point of departure for examining a bordercrossing literature on the move is travel literature, from which the view opens up unto other spaces, dimensions and patterns of movement which will shape the literatures of the 21th Century. • Publisher : BPS Books
  • Release : 2012-09-24
  • ISBN : 192748331X
  • Pages : 69 pages

Download or read book Know Thyself written by Wayne Constantineau and published by BPS Books. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third of five books in the groundbreaking new series The Human Equation Toolkit. In Books 1 and 2 of The Human Equation Toolkit series, mime Wayne Constantineau and scholar Eric McLuhan explore the four postures and the four modes of action. They show how the postures (standing, lying down, kneeling, sitting) combine with the modes of action (isometric pressure, displacement, configuration, articulation) to provide the basis of all developments in culture, science, activity, and media. Now, in Book 3 of the series, they investigate the interplay between these modes and the modes of perception. "Know yourself" becomes a journey that Socrates -- and perhaps even the Delphic Oracle -- never could have imagined: a sense-opening odyssey into the pathological and physiological effects of the media -- or extensions -- of humanity.

Book Shakespeare Expressed

Download or read book Shakespeare Expressed written by Kathryn M. Moncrief and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays originally presented on the Blackfriars stage at the American Shakesepeare Center, Shakespeare Expressed brings together scholars and practitioners, often promoting ideas that can be translated into classroom experiences. Drawing on essays presented at the Sixth Blackfriars Conference, held in October 2011, the essays focus on Shakespeare in performance by including work from scholars, theatrical practitioners (actors, directors, dramaturgs, designers), and teachers in a format that facilitates conversations at the intersection of textual scholarship, theatrical performance, and pedagogy. The volume’s thematic sections briefly represent some of the major issues occupying scholars and practitioners: how to handle staging choices, how modern actors embody early modern characters, how the physical and technical aspects of early modern theaters previously impacted and how they currently affect performance, and how the play texts can continue to enlighten theatrical and scholarly endeavors. A special essay on pedagogy that features specific classroom exercises also anchors each section in the collection. The result is an eclectic, stimulating, and forward-thinking look at the most current trends in early modern theater studies.

Book Confessions of an Illuminati VOLUME II

Download or read book Confessions of an Illuminati VOLUME II written by Leo Lyon Zagami and published by CCC Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his master thesis of the secret societies network as outlined in Volume I, the Confessions of an Illuminati narrative of Leo Lyon Zagami is projected to the reality of today, including the occult maneuvers behind the New World Order. We need to wake up beyond our current belief systems, because the "controllers" of the New World Order are moving fast using the "Prophecies" to their advantage to implement their evil plan by 2020, when World War III will finally break loose. The author demonstrates that the hierarchy of power emanating from Rome and Jerusalem, with the Jesuits and the Zionist's united by a secret pact since the Second Vatican Council, are in cahoots working towards the creation of a world government. There is also China playing a new role in the NWO with the far reaching tentacles of Chinese Freemasonry manipulating economic Hit Men and disinformation artists, while Russia is building their Christian orthodox alliance to apparently oppose the Western antichrist. In this unprecedented scenario, we also have the involvement of the big media moguls like Ted Turner and Silvio Berlusconi and their role in manipulating perceptions. The author discusses further aspects of the Satanic infiltration of Freemasonry, pointing out on the generational aspect the many ways of defending yourself psychically against black magicians, but also against the many sects operating in the Illuminati Network.
