Book Freshwater Microplastics

Download or read book Freshwater Microplastics written by Martin Wagner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume focuses on microscopic plastic debris, also referred to as microplastics, which have been detected in aquatic environments around the globe and have accordingly raised serious concerns. The book explores whether microplastics represent emerging contaminants in freshwater systems, an area that remains underrepresented to date. Given the complexity of the issue, the book covers the current state-of-research on microplastics in rivers and lakes, including analytical aspects, environmental concentrations and sources, modelling approaches, interactions with biota, and ecological implications. To provide a broader perspective, the book also discusses lessons learned from nanomaterials and the implications of plastic debris for regulation, politics, economy, and society. In a research field that is rapidly evolving, it offers a solid overview for environmental chemists, engineers, and toxicologists, as well as water managers and policy-makers.

Download or read book Coast Guard written by U S Government Accountability Office (G and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GAO provided information on abandoned vessels in U.S. coastal and inland waterways, focusing on: (1) the number of vessels that have been abandoned nationwide; (2) the extent of environmental problems caused by abandoned vessels and the associated costs; and (3) the adequacy of federal laws and regulations dealing with abandoned vessels. GAO found that: (1) estimates of the number of abandoned vessels on the East and Gulf coasts and eastern inland waterways range between 1,300 and 4,000; (2) according to Coast Guard officials, its lower estimate focuses only on vessels it considers to be a pollution threat; (3) since January 1988, the Coast Guard has investigated 96 incidents of potential water pollution, and estimated that $5.7 million was expended to clean up the vessels and the pollution from them; (4) the Army Corps of Engineers estimated that it spent $5.2 million to remove 282 abandoned vessels that posed a threat to navigational safety; (5) no federal laws specifically prohibit abandonment of vessels or require that barges be registered so that owners can be identified and held accountable; and (6) the federal government will likely continue to incur costs to remove abandoned vessels and clean up associated pollution.

Book Recommendations on Harmonized Europe wide Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation Vessels

Download or read book Recommendations on Harmonized Europe wide Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation Vessels written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UNECE Recommendations on Harmonized Europe-Wide Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation Vessels (Resolution No. 61) establish a Pan-European regime of technical requirements for inland navigation vessels engaged in international transport of goods and passengers. They are a result of Governments efforts, aimed at unifying the divergent regulations in force within different intergovernmental organizations and within individual UNECE member countries. The unified regulations contained therein have been brought in line with relevant European Union's legislation and are to facilitate the recognition of ship's certificates issued on their basis, thus avoiding the need for vessels engaged in international transport by inland waterway to undergo a double inspection. The Recommendations contain, in particular, strict regulations on limitation of air and water pollution by vessels and on abatement of noise produced by them as well as the internationally agreed standards for minimum manning requirements and working and rest hours of crews.
