Book Ich Bin Ende Oder Anfang

Download or read book Ich Bin Ende Oder Anfang written by Mark H. Gelber and published by de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book-series, initiated in 1992, has an interdisciplinary orientation; it is published in English and German and comprises research monographs, collections of essays and editions of source texts dealing with German-Jewish literary and cultural history, in particular from the period covering the 18th to 20th centuries. The closer definition of the term German-Jewish applied to literature and culture is an integral part of its historical development. Primarily, the decisive factor is that from the middle of the 18th century German gradually became the language of choice for Jews, and Jewish authors started writing in German, rather than Yiddish or Hebrew, even when they were articulating Jewish themes. This process is directly connected an historical change in mentality and social factors which led to a gradual opening towards a non-Jewish environment, which in its turn was becoming more open. In the Enlightenment, German society becomes the standard of reference - initially for an intellectual elite. Against this background, the term German-Jewish literature refers to the literary work of Jewish authors writing in German to the extent that explicit or implicit Jewish themes, motifs, modes of thought or models can be identified in them. From the beginning of the 19th century at the latest, however, the image of Jews in the work of non-Jewish writers, determined mainly by anti-Semitism, becomes a factor in German-Jewish literature. There is a tension between Jewish writers' authentic reference to Jewish traditions or existence and the anti-Semitic marking and discrimination against everything Jewish which determines the overall development of the history of German-Jewish literature and culture. This series provides an appropriate forum for research into the whole problematic area.

Book Neue Studien zu den johanneischen Schriften

Download or read book Neue Studien zu den johanneischen Schriften written by Johannes Beutler and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of the Old Testament and Early Judaism on the Fourth Gospel is the subject of various contributions of this book, as well as the influence of the Synoptic tradition. However, the author's interest also lies in the latest stratum of the Gospel of John. The interpretive model of relecturing allows the study of the relation between texts without the need to hypothesize about their authors and sources. At the same time, it is easier to consider the message of the Gospel in the past and in the present day in the light of the complete text. John invites his readers to not only have faith in Christ, but also to fearlessly profess their faith. Of the twenty contributions to this volume, originally published since 1998, three have been translated from Italian or Spanish, and five have remained in the original English.

Book Discard Studies

Download or read book Discard Studies written by Max Liboiron and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that social, political, and economic systems maintain power by discarding certain people, places, and things. Discard studies is an emerging field that looks at waste and wasting broadly construed. Rather than focusing on waste and trash as the primary objects of study, discard studies looks at wider systems of waste and wasting to explore how some materials, practices, regions, and people are valued or devalued, becoming dominant or disposable. In this book, Max Liboiron and Josh Lepawsky argue that social, political, and economic systems maintain power by discarding certain people, places, and things. They show how the theories and methods of discard studies can be applied in a variety of cases, many of which do not involve waste, trash, or pollution. Liboiron and Lepawsky consider the partiality of knowledge and offer a theory of scale, exploring the myth that most waste is municipal solid waste produced by consumers; discuss peripheries, centers, and power, using content moderation as an example of how dominant systems find ways to discard; and use theories of difference to show that universalism, stereotypes, and inclusion all have politics of discard and even purification—as exemplified in “inclusive” efforts to broaden the Black Lives Matter movement. Finally, they develop a theory of change by considering “wasting well,” outlining techniques, methods, and propositions for a justice-oriented discard studies that keeps power in view.

Book Re thinking Diversity

Download or read book Re thinking Diversity written by Cordula Braedel-Kühner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume entails a collection of new ideas, themes and questions towards a phenomenon which we are used to refer to with the key term “diversity”. The aim of the book is to offer a cultural sciences perspective on “diversity”, to advance knowledge about it and enrich the dialogue between academics and practitioners in related domains of action. Today, changes in the demographic structures of the population, the migration flux, multiculturalism, the rising awareness concerning minorities’ rights, gender studies and so on lead to a complex picture of what “diversity” means. The narrative of a society and of most organizations is constituted by multiple layers of social categorization, segregation and identity. Therefore, “diversity” defies simple definition. The contributions in this volume approach the phenomenon from different angles and reveal new theoretical, methodological and practical perspectives on it.

Book German and English

Download or read book German and English written by Dirk Siepmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German and English: Academic Usage and Academic Translation focuses on academic and popular scientific/academic usage. This book’s brief is both theoretical and practical: on the theoretical side, it aims to provide a systematic, corpus-based account of current academic usage in English and in German as well as of the translation problems associated with various academic genres; on the practical side, it seeks to equip academic translators with the skills required to produce target-language text in accordance with disciplinary conventions. The main perspective taken is that of a translator working from German into English, but the converse direction is also regularly taken into account. Most of the examples used are based on errors that occurred in real-life translation jobs. Additional practice materials and sample translations are available as eResources here: www.routledge.com/9780367619022. This book will be an important resource for professionals aspiring to translate academic texts, linguists interested in academic usage, translation scholars, and graduate and post-graduate students.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive monograph on Markus Oehlen which focuses upon his work spanning three decades, from 1981 to 2008. Often associated with the Neue Wilde art movement in Germany his work in painting and sculpture is influenced by other German artists such as Martin Kippenberger, Werner Büttner and Georg Herold. As well as his artistic activities Oehlen was also a musician and in the 1980s he was the former drummer in Fehlfarben, one of the first German punk bands. He is currently a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. The essays of Wolfgang Ullrich, Harald Falckenberg and Martin Prinzhorn explore Oehlan's art from different perspectives: from the 'line of sight', to the abstract sculptures from styrofoam bodies, to concrete painting in the 1990s. Richly illustrated with over 100 colour images this catalogue was published in association with the Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, Frankfurt am Main, and Galerie Hans Mayer, Düsseldorf. Book Topic Drop and Null Subjects in German

Download or read book Topic Drop and Null Subjects in German written by Ewa Trutkowski and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with argument drop in the German prefield and it presents new insights into null subjects, topic drop and the interpretation of topic dropped elements. Major issues are (inter alia) the drop of structurally vs. obliquely cased arguments and the question on which basis nominative/accusative and dative/genitive can be kept apart. Furthermore, it is shown that the (im)possibility of phi-feature mismatches concerning the antecedent and gap in topic drop dialogues allows to differentiate between coreference and "real" (quantifier) binding. Aside from topic drop, (1st/2nd vs. 3rd person) null subjects are investigated across a couple of unrelated languages, also focusing on the presence of syncretisms within verbal inflectional paradigms. It is proven that 1st/2nd person null subjects in German are not an instance of antecedent-dependent topic drop but that they are licensed by discrete verbal inflectional endings. Thus, according to this property, German can be classified as a partial pro-drop language. Next to theoretical discussions and considerations this book offers a broad (empirically covered) data basis, which makes it suitable for both theoretically and empirically interested (generative) linguists.
