Book Centre and Periphery Roots and Exile

Download or read book Centre and Periphery Roots and Exile written by Friedemann Sallis and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact place and displacement can have on the composition and interpretation of Western art music, using as its primary objects of study the work of István Anhalt (1919–2012) György Kurtág (1926–) and Sándor Veress (1907–92). Although all three composers are of Hungarian origin, their careers followed radically different paths. Whereas, Kurtág remained in Budapest for most of his career, Anhalt and Veress left: the former in 1946 and immigrated to Canada and the latter in 1948 and settled in Switzerland. All three composers have had an extraordinary impact in the cultural environments within which their work took place. In the first section, “Place and Displacement,” contributors examine what happens when composers and their music migrate in the culturally complex world of the late twentieth century. The past one hundred years produced record numbers of refugees, and this fact is now beginning to resonate in the study of music. As Anhalt himself forcefully asserts, however, not all composers who emigrate should be understood as exiles. The first chapters of this book explore some of the problems and questions surrounding this issue. Essays in the second section, “Perspectives on Reception, Analysis, and Interpretation,” look at how performing acts of interpretation on music implies bringing the time, place, and identity of the musician, the analyst, and the teacher to bear on the object of study. Like Kodály, Kurtág considers his work to be “naturally” embedded in Hungarian culture, but he is also a quintessentially European artist. Much of his production—he is one of the twentieth century’s most prolific composers of vocal music—involves the setting of Hungarian texts, but in the late 1970s his cultural horizons expanded to include texts in Russian, German, French, English, and ancient Greek. The book explores how musicologists’ divergent cultural perspectives impinge on the interpretation of this work. The final section, “The Presence of the Past and Memory in Contemporary Music,” examines the impact time and memory can have on notions of place and identity in music. All living art taps into the personal and collective past in one way or another. The final four chapters look at various aspects of this relationship.

Book Global Seagrass Research Methods

Download or read book Global Seagrass Research Methods written by F.T. Short and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-11-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thorough and informative volume presents a set of detailed, globally applicable techniques for seagrass research. The book provides methods for all aspects of seagrass science from basic plant collection to statistical approaches and investigations of plant-animal interaction. The emphasis is on methods that are applicable in both developing and developed countries. The importance of seagrasses in coastal and near shore environments, and ultimately their contribution to the productivity of the world's oceans, has become increasingly recognised over the last 40 years.Seagrasses provide food for sea turtles, nearly 100 fish species, waterfowl and for the marine mammals the manatee and dugong. Seagrasses also support complex food webs by virtue of their physical structure and primary production and are well known for their role as breeding grounds and nurseries for important crustacean, finfish and shell fish populations. Seagrasses are the basis of an important detrital food chain. The plants filter nutrients and contaminants from the water, stabilise sediments and act as dampeners to wave action. Seagrasses rank with coral reefs and mangroves as some of the world's most productive coastal habitat and strong linkages among these habitats make the loss of seagrasses a contributing factor in the degradation of the world's oceans.Contributors from around the world provide up-to-date methods for comparable collection of ecological information from both temperate and tropical seagrass ecosystems.

Book Adani versus the Black throated Finch

Download or read book Adani versus the Black throated Finch written by Tor Hundloe and published by Australian Scholarly Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 3 April 2016 the Queensland government announced that it had granted coal leases to Adani. They are in Banjo Paterson country, where ‘Waltzing Matilda’ was written. The grant put the cart before the horse. Offset habitat for the endangered Black-throated Finch had not been located, let alone secured. Compensation for graziers’ losses of water had not been agreed. The ecological health of the Great Barrier Reef was threatened as a great amount of coal would be shipped and burned. There were no guarantees as to the royalties and tax the nation would earn. And conflicting stories were told by Adani: the mine was projected to last 150 years and employ 10,000; years later, Adani admitted its lifespan would be 60 years and employ under 1,500. The very serious threat of environmental damage, the likelihood that the finches won't be saved and the economic uncertainty lead inexorably to one conclusion. However, you be the judge ...

Book Theology and Agency in Early Modern Literature

Download or read book Theology and Agency in Early Modern Literature written by Timothy Rosendale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can I do? To what degree do we control our own desires, actions, and fate - or not? These questions haunt us, and have done so, in various forms, for thousands of years. Timothy Rosendale explores the problem of human will and action relative to the Divine - which Luther himself identified as the central issue of the Reformation - and its manifestations in English literary texts from 1580–1670. After an introduction which outlines the broader issues from Sophocles and the Stoics to twentieth-century philosophy, the opening chapter traces the theological history of the agency problem from the New Testament to the seventeenth century. The following chapters address particular aspects of volition and salvation (will, action, struggle, and blame) in the writings of Marlowe, Kyd, Shakespeare, Ford, Herbert, Donne, and Milton, who tackle these problems with an urgency and depth that resonate with parallel concerns today.

Download or read book Careers Services written by David Peck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the pre-war Juvenile Employment Service to the diversity provided by Careers Scotland, Careers Wales, Connexions and Guidance Partnerships for Adults, David Peck analyzes the origins and development of careers guidance over the past one hundred years. Each new development in U.K. careers services is related to wider changes in social, education and economic policy, with references made throughout to major political figures with an interest in career choice, from Winston Churchill to Tony Blair. Particular attention is paid to the growth of a professional ethic among careers advisers: their training, qualifications and practice. This is the first ever published work to cover the history of the careers services in the U.K. Wide-ranging and meticulously researched, this book will make a significant contribution to the increasingly urgent debate on the future of career guidance, and for the first time calls the professionals to examine their past in order to improve and inform the future of careers services and their clients. Practitioners working in schools, further and higher education or with adults and young workers, student careers advisers and their tutors, should find this book an essential and comprehensive resource.
