When stories inhabit us, imagination and memory extend our ability to see and feel. Phenomenological experience is lived, not just thought. Such a perspective suggests that the past and future inhabit the present, increase the depth of sensory perception itself, and enrich the range of our affective and ethical responses. Grounded in the lived experience of reading, this perspective offers an alternative to an idea of intertextuality as simply following lines of influence and appropriation. It focuses on the expansion of experience created by telling and retelling stories. Ironically, for literary theorists and critics, perhaps the highest form of both praise and critique is a tale retold, since such retellings attest to literature’s instructive power and its perennial regeneration.

He worked in London with Erno Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun in 1960 64 under the strong and lasting influence also of the movements of Modernism and New Brutalism then prevailing in the theoretical discourse in British architecture. His own studio Ponis established in 1964 in Palau, on the Italian island of Sardinia, working since on private, public and urban planning commissions. In 1990 he was awarded the INARCH prize for the Village of "Stazzo Pulcheddu" in Palau. Ponis often refers to the natural conditions and the social history of Sardinia when talking about his work in architecture. Besides of nature and society, he has also extensively studied the "stazzo, " Sardinia s typical rural building type. This thorough knowledge of conditions, traditions and requirements are the foundation of an oeuvre of more than 300 residential buildings. Each of them deeply rooted in its environment and connected with the land and other dwellings by the "sentiero, " the path leading to and from the house. Ponis s houses are meant to be summer homes, their inert warmth reflecting the architect s fundamental optimism. They show a natural modesty and simplicity rather than their owner s wealth or status. They express the architect s great formal skills and sensitivity. They are inconceivable without the Sardinian landscape and history and the island seems to have been expecting just these particular buildings, merging naturally with nature. The new book "Alberto Ponis Sardinia" is the first comprehensive monograph on this highly interesting and original yet little known architect. In five lavishly illustrated sections it documents his biography and early work, his extensive research on Sardinia, eight selected buildings created between 1965 98 that make traceable the evolution of Ponis s work, his philosophy ( Thoughts and Forms ), and a concluding essay on the essence of his architecture. Through an ethnographic exploration of Canada’s ten UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites, Inhabited reflects on the meanings of wildness, wilderness, and natural heritage. As we are introduced to local inhabitants and their perspectives, Phillip Vannini and April Vannini ask us to reflect on the colonial and dualist assumptions behind the received meaning of wild, challenging us to reimagine wildness as relational and rooted in vitality. Over the three years they spent in and around these sites, they learned from Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples about their entanglements with each other and with non-human animals, rocks, plants, trees, sky, water, and spirits. The stories, actions, and experiences they encountered challenge conventional narratives of wild places as uninhabited by people and disconnected from culture and society. The pre-colonial history of Saba begins around 3800 years ago with the first fishers-foragers and plant managers occupying the interior of the island at Plum Piece, Fort Bay, The Level and Great Point. The exceptional character of Saba with its volcano, diverse vegetation, and fauna, attracted Amerindian communities from the prime episode of human occupation of the insular Caribbean, first on a temporary basis and later, from AD 400 on, permanently. They then settled in Spring Bay, Kelbey's Ridge, Windwardside, St. Johns, and The Bottom just like today. Their villages consisted of a series of dwellings of wood, fibers and leafs, surrounded by hearths and garbage dumps. The deceased were buried in the village, often under the floor of the houses. The Amerindians on Saba maintained extensive relationships with communities and kin on neighboring islands. The artefacts which have been found on Saba show these connections.
