Book excerpt: El objetivo de esta investigación ha sido estudiar, utilizando la metodología de la ingeniería didáctica, las causas de las dificultades que se presentan en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje del Cálculo Diferencial. Para ello hemos usado como soporte las Ciencias Experimentales. Buscamos dichas causas no sólo en las formas en que trasmitimos el conocimiento sino fundamentalmente en la manera en que se articula el contenido que se enseña. Para ello hemos tratado de desarrollar en el alumnado la idea de variación, que nos posibilite abordar con éxito la noción de predicción, noción ésta propia de las Ciencias Experimentales. La idea de variación, en el contexto de la Cinemática, se presenta a través de las derivadas sucesivas, considerándolas como una sucesión de derivadas. En el caso de la noción de predicción nuestra herramienta ha sido la serie de Taylor, siempre en el contexto de las Ciencias Experimentales. Este trabajo aporta abundantes datos experimentales para el análisis de las dificultades, obstáculos y teoremas factuales que se presentan en el aprendizaje de las nociones involucradas. Asimismo, se han obtenido resultados positivos en cuanto a la efectividad de la metodología empleada. Esta investigación aporta en dos direcciones. Primero, logramos extender su margen de aplicabilidad al usar la metodología de la ingeniería didáctica en un contexto interdisciplinar. Segundo, nos permitió analizar información cualitativa característica al estudiar un número reducido de casos, sin abandonar el ámbito académico, para interpretar y comprender ciertos aspectos de la forma de razonar de los alumnos ante tareas específicas.

Book excerpt: No one disputes how important it is, in today's world, to prepare students to un derstand mathematics as well as to use and communicate mathematics in their future lives. That task is very difficult, however. Refocusing curricula on funda mental concepts, producing new teaching materials, and designing teaching units based on 'mathematicians' common sense' (or on logic) have not resulted in a better understanding of mathematics by more students. The failure of such efforts has raised questions suggesting that what was missing at the outset of these proposals, designs, and productions was a more profound knowledge of the phenomena of learning and teaching mathematics in socially established and culturally, politically, and economically justified institutions - namely, schools. Such knowledge cannot be built by mere juxtaposition of theories in disci plines such as psychology, sociology, and mathematics. Psychological theories focus on the individual learner. Theories of sociology of education look at the general laws of curriculum development, the specifics of pedagogic discourse as opposed to scientific discourse in general, the different possible pedagogic rela tions between the teacher and the taught, and other general problems in the inter face between education and society. Mathematics, aside from its theoretical contents, can be looked at from historical and epistemological points of view, clarifying the genetic development of its concepts, methods, and theories. This view can shed some light on the meaning of mathematical concepts and on the difficulties students have in teaching approaches that disregard the genetic development of these concepts.

The main goal of the project was to investigate the gender gap in STEM disciplines from different angles, globally and across disciplines. We have performed (i) a global survey of scientists with more than 32,000 responses; (ii) an investigation of the effect of gender in millions of scientific publications; and (iii) the compilation of best-practice initiatives that address the gender gap in Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Sciences at various levels. We conclude that the gender gap is very real in science and mathematics. We present methodologies, insights, and tools that have been developed throughout the project, as well as a set of recommendations for different audiences: instructors and parents; educational institutions; scientific unions and other organizations responsible for science policy.
