Download or read book Infrared Applications of Semiconductors II Symposium Held in Boston Massachusetts on December 1 4 1997 written by McDaniel Pachavis (Donald) and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of semiconductor materials have been used to fabricate diode lasers for the mid-infrared. Lasers using the lead salts (e.g., PbSnTe) have been commercially available for sometime. Mid-infrared emitting III-V semiconductors (e.g., InGaAsSb) have superior thermal conductivity, and diode lasers fabricated from these material offer higher powers, of particular interest are the III-V semiconductor laser based on type-II superlattices (e.g., InAs/GaInSb). Among the many unique properties attributed to type-II superlattices are small hole mass, reduced Auger recombination, and less inter-valence band absorption-all important for better lasers. Recent results with Quantum Cascade-type lasers are also very encouraging. This paper summarizes the important semiconductor materials for mid-infrared lasers with emphasis on the type-II superlattices.

Book Infrared Spectroscopic Investigations on II VI Semi Magnetic Semiconductors

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopic Investigations on II VI Semi Magnetic Semiconductors written by and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we investigated ZnSe-based materials, which are interesting for a variety of potential applications in various devices. There was only limited information available in the literature about Zn1-xMnxSe material parameters like the electron effective mass and transport properties. In this work, we explored many new details about this interesting material using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and some other experimental techniques. The fundamental aspects related to lattice vibrations in mixed crystal alloys and reststrahlen band were also studied. In summary the following results have been obtained in this thesis: (A) Results from the series of chlorine-doped Zn1-xMnxSe samples: To extract information about the electron effective mass we performed roomtemperature plasma edge measurements on chlorine-doped n-type Zn1-xMnxSe epilayers. Via Drude-Lorentz-type multi-oscillator fits to our data, we extracted the optical electron effective mass (m*) in chlorine doped Zn1-xMnxSe:Cl samples for different Mn contents and free-electron concentrations. The free-electron concentration was determined using room-temperature van-der-Pauw Hall effect measurements. Our results indicate that: (A1) The electron effective mass in Zn1-xMnxSe is lower than that for ZnSe. A distinct reduction of the electron effective mass is observed upon Mn incorporation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared (IR) technologies-from Herschel's initial experiment in the 1800s to thermal detector development in the 1900s, followed by defense-focused developments using HgCdTe-have now incorporated a myriad of novel materials for a wide variety of applications in numerous high-impact fields. These include astronomy applications; composition identifications; toxic gas and explosive detection; medical diagnostics; and industrial, commercial, imaging, and security applications. Various types of semiconductor-based (including quantum well, dot, ring, wire, dot in well, hetero and/or homo junction, Type II super lattice, and Schottky) IR (photon) detectors, based on various materials (type IV, III-V, and II-VI), have been developed to satisfy these needs. Currently, room temperature detectors operating over a wide wavelength range from near IR to terahertz are available in various forms, including focal plane array cameras. Recent advances include performance enhancements by using surface Plasmon and ultrafast, high-sensitivity 2D materials for infrared sensing. Specialized detectors with features such as multiband, selectable wavelength, polarization sensitive, high operating temperature, and high performance (including but not limited to very low dark currents) are also being developed. This Special Issue highlights advances in these various types of infrared detectors based on various material systems.
