Download or read book Puerto Rico written by Gordon K. Lewis and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its first publication over forty years ago Puerto Rico: Freedom and Power in the Caribbean by Gordon K. Lewis has established itself, and even today, remains the definitive book on that Caribbean island. Lewis treats the subject historically and descriptively; on the one hand, it is an account of Puerto Rico as a colony, first under Spain and after 1898, under the United States. On the other hand, it is a systematic analysis of contemporary Puerto Rican life, including its politics, economic organisation and socio-political make-up, which is as relevant for this new edition as it was forty years ago. The book is also an in-depth attempt to show the political, social, cultural and even the psychological dimensions of American imperialism, rather than a mere case study of US Federalism or as a so-called 'showcase of democracy'."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This volume on penitentiary systems in the Americas offers a long-overdue look at the prisons that exist at the forefront of the ongoing struggle against drugs and violence throughout North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. From Haiti to Bolivia, the authors examine the conditions in these systems, and allow several common themes to emerge, including the alarming prevalence of lengthy pre-trial detention and the often abysmal living conditions in these institutions. Taken together, this comprises the first comparative overview of the use and abuse of prisons in the Americas.

Download or read book A History of Colombian Economic Thought written by Andrés Álvarez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists’ practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. This book will be of significant interest to readers of history of economic thought, economic history and the history of Colombian and Latin American economic, political and social life more broadly.

Download or read book Election Administration and the Politics of Voter Access written by Kevin Pallister and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratic countries vary widely in the extent to which the administration of the electoral process facilitates voter participation, showing a great deal of variation in everything from voter registration to the casting of ballots. This book is the first systematic study to investigate why it is easier to vote in some democracies than in others. It develops the concept of election administration inclusiveness, which considers all of the administrative requirements and procedures that a citizen confronts in exercising his or her right to vote. It then draws on in-depth case studies from Central America and data from Latin America more broadly to address how political parties and other actors interact in constructing election administration rules and procedures. Using a theoretical framework centred on electoral threat, party capacity, and electoral management body composition, the author identifies multiple pathways to inclusive and restrictive election administration. This book will be of key interest to students and scholars of elections, democracy studies, Latin American politics, and more broadly comparative politics and law.

Download or read book Work Protest and Identity in Twentieth century Latin America written by Vincent C. Peloso and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text takes a novel approach to labor. Rather than examine the labor movement, labor unions, and labor organizing, Work, Protest, and Identity in Twentieth-Century Latin America sets work in the context of social history in Latin America. It combines a chronological approach with a topical one to clarify how work is related to other themes in daily Latin American life-themes such as gender, race, family life, ethnicity, immigration, politics, industrial and agricultural growth, and religion. The essays in this collection bring together original studies and published works that illustrate the tensions and conflicts between work, identity, and community that caused protest to take many different forms in Latin American countries. Designed to give students a better appreciation for the complexity of the lives of the wage-working sectors of society and the richness of their contributions to the cultures and nations of the region, Work, Protest, and Identity in Twentieth-Century Latin America is essential for courses on the social history of Latin America, state formation, labor and protest, and surveys of modern Latin America.
