Book Rising Above the Gathering Storm Revisited

Download or read book Rising Above the Gathering Storm Revisited written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-23 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of so many daunting near-term challenges, U.S. government and industry are letting the crucial strategic issues of U.S. competitiveness slip below the surface. Five years ago, the National Academies prepared Rising Above the Gathering Storm, a book that cautioned: "Without a renewed effort to bolster the foundations of our competitiveness, we can expect to lose our privileged position." Since that time we find ourselves in a country where much has changed-and a great deal has not changed. So where does America stand relative to its position of five years ago when the Gathering Storm book was prepared? The unanimous view of the authors is that our nation's outlook has worsened. The present volume, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited, explores the tipping point America now faces. Addressing America's competitiveness challenge will require many years if not decades; however, the requisite federal funding of much of that effort is about to terminate. Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited provides a snapshot of the work of the government and the private sector in the past five years, analyzing how the original recommendations have or have not been acted upon, what consequences this may have on future competitiveness, and priorities going forward. In addition, readers will find a series of thought- and discussion-provoking factoids-many of them alarming-about the state of science and innovation in America. Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited is a wake-up call. To reverse the foreboding outlook will require a sustained commitment by both individual citizens and government officials-at all levels. This book, together with the original Gathering Storm volume, provides the roadmap to meet that goal. While this book is essential for policy makers, anyone concerned with the future of innovation, competitiveness, and the standard of living in the United States will find this book an ideal tool for engaging their government representatives, peers, and community about this momentous issue.

Book excerpt: Digital information and networks challenge the core practices of libraries, archives, and all organizations with intensive information management needs in many respectsâ€"not only in terms of accommodating digital information and technology, but also through the need to develop new economic and organizational models for managing information. LC21: A Digital Strategy for the Library of Congress discusses these challenges and provides recommendations for moving forward at the Library of Congress, the world's largest library. Topics covered in LC21 include digital collections, digital preservation, digital cataloging (metadata), strategic planning, human resources, and general management and budgetary issues. The book identifies and elaborates upon a clear theme for the Library of Congress that is applicable more generally: the digital age calls for much more collaboration and cooperation than in the past. LC21 demonstrates that information-intensive organizations will have to change in fundamental ways to survive and prosper in the digital age.

  • Pages : 87 pages

Download or read book Revisiting US VISIT written by David Santana Ortiz and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2004, spurred by the events of September 11, 2001, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security inaugurated a new system for the tracking of foreign visitors at ports of entry to the United States: the United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT) program. US-VISIT incorporates new technology, processes, and changes to immigration law across multiple federal departments and agencies. The technological aspects of US-VISIT include biometric visas, passports, and scanning equipment; linked databases; and the recording of the arrival and departure of nonimmigrant aliens. The US-VISIT information systems link several databases, including a watch list of known immigration violators and other criminals, a system for storing information on foreign students, and a database of previous visa holders. It is being implemented in four increments, with the first initiated in January 2004, and the final configuration of the system available near the end of the decade. Building on previous RAND research, this paper discusses some of the policy issues raised by the introduction and development of US-VISIT. Such issues include the program's effect on national security, personal privacy, and trade and tourism. Informing this analysis is a comparative case study of visa requirements instituted by France in the late 1980s and early 1990s in direct response to terrorist attacks.

Book Financial Privacy Electronic Commerce

Download or read book Financial Privacy Electronic Commerce written by Benjamin E. Robinson, III and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-08-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial services sector has had a respectable track record in the protection of consumer privacy. However, business practices, industry consolidation, electronic commerce and economic trends have raised consumer privacy as a key issue in the financial services sector. Improvements in the rapid transfer of information provide a new medium for the purchase of goods and services, that is, the medium of electronic commerce. The European Union has forced the issue with the Data Protection Directive. As a result, the United States has had to debate the lack of regulation or standards governing the new medium of electronic commerce. The debate could hinder any advance by society to engage in new technology. Because of increased government attention through regulatory and legislative action, corporations are developing self-regulatory initiatives to create industry standards for electronic commerce. Consumer privacy deals with how and what types of information are collected and how the data is controlled and accessed. Consumer concepts of privacy will resist or allow different configurations of what is allowable and what is utilized. The book is an exploratory and descriptive study that assesses the privacy concerns of today's consumer, as well as determines the potential impact of consumer privacy concerns on technological innovation and public policy. In order to understand privacy concerns, the study builds and extends current quantitative research on privacy in the financial service sector. Current research was developed to assess the privacy concerns of consumers. It was not designed to analyze or evaluate the specific impact of privacy on underrepresented consumers. The study expands research to focus on this particular segment of the population. Using privacy as the foundational issue/motivation for developing perspectives on financial education, the study focuses on people of color in the financial mainstream of our economy.
