Book Information Systems and Organizational Change Classic Reprint

Download or read book Information Systems and Organizational Change Classic Reprint written by Peter G. W. Keen and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Information Systems and Organizational Change This paper discusses long-term change in organizations in relation to information systems. The aim is to explain why innovation is so difficult and to point towards effective strategies for managing the process of change. Many commentators have drawn attention to problems of implementation that result in systems being technical successes but organizational failures Urban (69), Grayson (23), Keen (32), Drake (18). Their analyses stresses the complexity of organizational systems and the social inertia that dampens out the intended effects of technical innovations. The growing body of research on implementation mainly deals with tactical issues: how to create a climate for change and build and institutionalize a specific system. This paper focuses on strategic questions: (1) What are the causes of social inertia? (2) What are the main organizational constraints on change? (3) What are the mechanisms for effecting change? The dilemma to be resolved is that effective implementation relies on incremental change, small-scale projects and face-to-face facilitation [Ginzberg (22), Vertinsky, et al. (71), Keen and Scott Morton (36)]. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strategic Alignment: A Model for Organizational Transformation Via Information Technology More importantly, the emergence of the competitive role has significant implications for organizational transformation. This is because the mere superimposition of powerful I T capabilities on the existing organizational structure and processes is unlikely to yield superior competitive benefits. This is supported by one of the central messages from the recently concluded mit Research Project, Management in the 19905 (scott Morton, 1990) that successful organizations can be distinguished by their ability to leverage I/ T capabilities to transform their businesses (structures, processes, and roles) to obtain new and powerful sources of competitive advantages in the marketplace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Role of Information Systems Research Centers Significantly, from the viewpoint of the practicing manager, increased research in the field is also very desirable. The information systems function today is claiming a larger and larger share of corporate and non-profit organizational resources, both financial and managerial. Many believe that corporate bottom-line success will increasingly hinge upon effective use of information technology. Whether or not this is true is far from certain. What is certain, however, is that we must understand the managerial opportunities and problems which will develop with the new technology. Book Large Scale Organizational Change

Download or read book Large Scale Organizational Change written by Christopher Laszlo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large Scale Organizational Change provides the principles by which large scale organizations reinvent themselves not once, but on an ongoing basis. Continual reinvention allows leading companies to learn, adapt, and innovate faster than competitors in complex and fast changing environments. These action principles are based on first-hand experience at the world's leading Fortune 500 companies using emergent models of living systems. The context for large scale organizations is one of information overload, complexity and constant change. This book reduces the sense of vulnerability felt by managers. It provides a guide to piloting change in ways that lead to constant renewal and a capacity to survive frequent and often brutal changes in the operating environment. It describes a leadership concerned with the capacity to learn, inflection points, emergent strategies, knowledge management, the ability to anticipate, and tapping into the distributed intelligence resident in the organization. Large Scale Organizational Change provides managers with a framework for making their organizations highly adaptive in the complex market systems in which they operate, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for periodic episodes of traumatic restructuring and sometimes fatal reengineering processes.

Book Transforming Organizations

Download or read book Transforming Organizations written by Thomas A. Kochan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how organizations can, and should, transform their practices to compete in a world economy. Research results from a multi-disciplinary team of MIT researchers, along with the experiences and insights of a select group of industry practitioners, are integrated into a model that stresses the need for systemic and transformative rather than piecemeal or incremental changes in organization practices and public policy. This integration of research and experience results in an argument for a new organizational learning model--one capable of gaining advantage from employee diversity, cooperation across organizational boundaries, strategic restructuring, and advanced technology. The book begins with a foreword by Lester C. Thurow.
