SDSM&T is creating a WebCT environment entitled “Mining InformationLiteracy” to quiz students on their information literacy skills. I determined that the bestway to assist English professors who are instructing students in this area is to create awebsite explaining the major points of information literacy. I also composed a series ofsample quizzes to be uploaded into the WebCT environment. Both the website andWebCT quizzes can be modified to emphasize specific areas as professors oradministrators deem necessary.

Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.

Book excerpt: The South Dakota Assessment System provides information for schools to use in evaluating their teaching and curriculum as well as allowing parents to monitor their child's progress. All public schools in South Dakota test students according to South Dakota Codified Law 13-3-55, which was adopted in January 1997 and amended in January 2003. This law mandates that every public school district shall annually administer the same assessment to all students in grades three to eight, inclusive, and in grade eleven. The assessment shall measure the academic progress of each student. Every public school district shall also annually administer to all students in grades five and nine an achievement test to assess writing skills. The assessment instruments shall be provided by the Department of Education. Each state-designed test shall be correlated with the state's content standards. The assessment is used to determine individual, school-level, district-level, and statewide achievement in reaching the goal of proficiency of the state's essential core reading and math content standards. South Dakota has four performance levels: Advanced, Proficient, Basic and Below Basic. Performance descriptors have been set for reading and mathematics. These descriptors are narrative statements of academic achievement at each of the performance levels and provide students, parents, and teachers with information as to the level of mastery of South Dakota essential core content standards. Individual reports are available for the state assessments. School building and district results show how groups of students are performing and the success of the school or district in helping students meet the proficient and advanced performance levels. Those students, who are unable to participate in a statewide assessment as determined by the IEP (Individual Education Program) team, will participate in the Statewide Team-led Alternate Assessment Reporting System (STAARS). A resource list is provided. An Eligibility Criteria Worksheet is appended.

The High School is a rural school on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in South Dakota. According to MAPS tests administered during the 2014-2015 school year, a majority of students in the 9th grade had a third-grade reading level. This state of affairs was evidenced when a student was asked to read aloud out of a textbook during class. The low reading level ability was reflected in the low scores a great number of students received in Freshman Science class. Most were experiencing learned helplessness and would not even participate in class which led to discipline problems. The purpose of an innovation would be to improve reading skills starting at the beginning of the students’ life, and life in school in order for the student to have adequate reading capabilities in high school and beyond. That the teacher can affect the ability to read as early as Kindergarten is a possibility. It was found that a Kindergarten teacher’s affective quality had an influence on working memory, which in turn effects skills in first grade. Most effective was the child’s learning of independence through the way the teacher treated the student. In another study, it was found that development of the phonological loop aspect of working memory predicted better reading skills for Chinese students. The studies suggest that reading skills in children can be affected even earlier than in Elementary School. The students would benefit from a reading program to improve skills, as well as the teachers who could assign reading assignments and have students read in class, the school would benefit because scores would increase.
