Tables and analyses are presented to describe the membership of the seven Information Exchange Groups (IEG's) the scientific literature exchanged under the program and the data collected by NIH in examining the role of informal exchange in the conduct of scientific research. Membership questionnaires which provided the data for NIH surveys were analyzed as the primary source of information on the results of the six-year experiment.

Book Information Seeking and Communicating Behavior of Scientists and Engineers

Download or read book Information Seeking and Communicating Behavior of Scientists and Engineers written by Cynthia Steinke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inspiring book addresses a topic that is far too often ignored or disregarded by sci-tech librarians: Exactly how do scientists and engineers really discover, select, and use the countless information and communications resources available to them when conducting research? The answer to this question should be a major influence on the way information specialists develop information systems in their libraries. Unfortunately, many librarians are not as familiar with the work, information needs, and communicating behavior of the research worker. Information Seeking and Communications Behavior of Scientists and Engineers looks at this question from several perspectives to give an overall view of how to best serve the needs of the scientific community. This book is an encouragement and a challenge to sci-tech librarians to make an ever greater effort to understand the work of their users, the differing information channels and sources they employ, and thus tailor the library’s systems and services to best support their information-seeking behavior.

Book An Introduction to Science Studies

Download or read book An Introduction to Science Studies written by John M. Ziman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-07-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a coherent account of the different perspectives on science and technology that are normally studied under various disciplinary heads such as philosophy of science, sociology of science and science policy. It is intended for students embarking on courses in these subjects and assumes no special knowledge of any science. It is written in a direct and simple style, and technical language is introduced very sparingly. As various perspectives are sketched out in this book, the reader moves towards a consistent conception of contemporary science as a rapidly changing social institution that has already grown out of its traditional forms and plays a central role in society at large. It will appeal to students in a wide range of scientific disciplines and complement well Professor Ziman's earlier books.

Book Determinants of Productivity in Indian Science

Download or read book Determinants of Productivity in Indian Science written by A. V. S. Kamesh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an organizational study of the social aspects of science in India focusing on the determinants of productivity of Indian scientists. The book describes the factors of productivity levels of organic chemists in India in the context of transformation from academic science to post-academic science, and more so, entrepreneurial science. This book considers new factors such as communication technology as an enabling tool to enhance the productivity levels of scientists, and indicates how the different access to the same could lead to/reinforce social inequality in the sphere of Indian science. The present empirical work is an outcome of a study of Indian scientists based on both quantitative and qualitative methods. This book provides an estimation of the relative contribution of determinants of productivity of organic chemists across different levels of organization in the Indian context, and examines their consequences upon the career pattern of scientists. The findings of this study are policy-oriented suggestions aimed at ensuring social equality among scientists in India.
