Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the career development of underprepared college students through a framework of Relational Career Theory. Demographic information was reported for the population to help better understand these students. Specifically, the constructs of family influence, locus of control, and career decision-making self-efficacy were explored as they relate to perceived success in college. Finally, gender differences for each construct were also examined. The demographic information collected supports reported statistical information about this group in that students of a minority status and first-generation college students were overrepresented in the population. No significant relationship between the RCT constructs and perceived success in college were found. However, significant correlations between external locus of control and family expectations, financial support, and values and beliefs were found indicating that a greater family influence is related to external control. Additionally, higher levels of career decision-making self-efficacy were related to internal locus of control and informational support from family. These findings support previous research as well as theorized RCT connections. Finally, no significant differences between men and women were found. This study provides further information about underprepared college students to help practitioners better understand this population. This study also provides significant correlations between the RCT constructs of family influence, locus of control, and career decision-making self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics, and career thought processes among college students with disabilities based on Antonovsky's conceptual framework of sense of coherence. Participants were college students with disabilities collected through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (rcpd) at Michigan State University and other universities and colleges via a listserv of the Michigan Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (mi-ahead). Pearson Correlation Coefficient and forward stepwise regression analyses were carried out in order to find out the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics (E.G., gender, race, and socioeconomic status), and career thought processes. Results supported that college students with disabilities who showed higher sense of coherence indicated less overall dysfunctional career thoughts, career decision-making confusion, or career-related anxiety. In addition, the relationships between sense of coherence, career thoughts, and the demographic characteristics have been found. Implications for career development professionals as well as clinical considerations of caring for college students with disabilities experiencing career-related difficulties were discussed. Book excerpt: First-generation college students (FGCS) do not have primary caregivers with a bachelor's degree. This identity contributes above and beyond other background factors in predicting outcomes (Gibbons & Borders, 2010). This study aimed to identify specific supports and barriers that affect the career decision process for this population and add to the dearth of research in this area. Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent et al., 1994), which accounts for contextual factors, was used as a lens in the current study. Population-relevant supports and barriers such as social status, experiences with classism, parental support, and role model influence were identified as especially relevant for the career development process of first-generation college students (Gibbons & Borders, 2010; Lent et al., 2002; Olson, 2014). Coping efficacy was hypothesized as a mediator between the supports and barriers and vocational outcomes (i.e., career decision self-efficacy and career indecision). Data from a national sample of 251 ethnically and socioeconomically diverse FGCS yielded significant correlational findings. Social status was positively correlated with perceived parental support, supportive role model influence, and career decision self-efficacy and negatively correlated with experiences with classism and career indecision. Experiences with classism were negatively related with career decision self-efficacy and positively correlated with career indecision. Perceived parental support and supportive role model influence were both positively correlated with career decision self-efficacy, however, they lacked significant relationships with career indecision. A path analysis revealed that the hypothesized model was not supported by the data. Exploratory analyses guided by theory, however, yielded a model that was a good fit for the data. Significant indirect effects were found within the best fitting model, with social status and coping efficacy serving as full mediators in the relationship between supports and barriers (i.e., experiences with classism, supportive role model influence, perceived parental support) and vocational outcomes (i.e., career decision self-efficacy, career indecision). Results added to the discussion on the placement of social status, supports, and barriers within the SCCT model. Findings also contributed by identifying points of intervention within educational and clinical contexts that could be used to promote the career development process of first-generation college students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of internalized stigma of mental illness on the career development of college students with hidden disabilities. The availability of research investigating career variables within this population is limited and is primarily focused within the vocational rehabilitation arena. Therefore, one of the goals of the current study was to link separate bodies of literature on college students with disabilities, career development, and internalized stigma of mental illness. The second goal was to examine the interaction of internalized stigma of mental illness between career decision self-efficacy and career exploration on the perceived likelihood of achieving hoped for occupational possible selves (OPS). The study included college students with hidden disabilities and investigated variables related to mental illness and career. Participants were administered a background information questionnaire, the Career Decision Self-Efficacy scale (CDSE-SF), selected subscales of the Career Exploration Survey (CES), and the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale (ISMI). Contrary to hypotheses, career decision making self-efficacy, career self-exploration, and internalized stigma of mental illness did not have a direct effect on the perceived likelihood of achieving hoped for OPS. However, career environment exploration did have a direct and positive association with perceived likelihood of achieving hoped for OPS. Results further indicated internalized stigma of mental illness did not moderate the effect of career decision self-efficacy and career exploration on the perceived likelihood of achieving one's hoped for occupational self. Study implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.
