Book The Effects of the Second Generation European Corn Borer Ostrinia Nubilalis Hubner Lepidoptera

Download or read book The Effects of the Second Generation European Corn Borer Ostrinia Nubilalis Hubner Lepidoptera written by P.A. Viana and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was conducted in 1981 and 1982 to quatify losses due to stalk breakage and dropped ears caused by 2nd-generation European corn borer under present corn production systems in Indiana. Insecticide treated and untreated portions of corn fields were compared at all test locations. Artificial infestation was achieved by pinning 2 egg masses (near hatching) through the leaf midrib of the ear leaf during the period of pollen shed. Chlorpyrifos (0.96 kg a.i./ha) was applied 1 or 2 times using a solo 425R knapsack sprayer and a Hi-BoyR sprayer in 1981 and 1982 experiments, respectively. Control was determined by counting entrance holes in the stalk and cavities caused by corn borer feeding in the stalk and ear shank. Stalk breakage before harvest was categorized as to its location in the stalk as top, above-ear, below-ear and bottom. Plants with visible ear shank damage were noted. Ears dropped to the ground before harvest and unpicked ears after harvest were counted and collected. Number of entrance holes was reduced by insecticide application in all experiments. The number of stalk cavities was lower in insecticide=treated plots than in untreated plots in all experiments, although nor significantly different in the 1981 experiment. Insecticide application had an effect on number of the borer cavities in the ear shank only in the 1981 experiment. Grain weight was higher in plots with insecticide application than no-insecticide treatment in 1981. No difference in grain weight was detected in 1982. the number (...).

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book Insect Resistance Management

Download or read book Insect Resistance Management written by David W. Onstad and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neither pest management nor resistance management can occur with only an understanding of pest biology. For years, entomologists have understood, with their use of economic thresholds, that at least a minimal use of economics was necessary for proper integrated pest management. IRM is even more complicated and dependent on understanding and using socioeconomic factors. The new edition of Insect Resistance Management addresses these issues and much more. Many new ideas, facts and case studies have been developed since the previous edition of Insect Resistance Management published. With a new chapter focusing on Resistance Mechanisms Related to Plant-incorporated Toxins and heavily expanded revisions of several existing chapters, this new volume will be an invaluable resource for IRM researchers, practitioners, professors and advanced students. Authors in this edition include professors at major universities, leaders in the chemical and seed industry, evolutionary biologists and active IRM practitioners. This revision also contains more information about IRM outside North America, and a modeling chapter contains a large new section on uncertainty analysis, a subject recently emphasized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The final chapter contains a section on insecticidal seed treatments. No other book has the breadth of coverage of Insect Resistance Management, 2e. It not only covers molecular to economic issues, but also transgenic crops, seed treatments and other pest management tactics such as crop rotation. Major themes continuing from the first edition include the importance of using IRM in the integrated pest management paradigm, the need to study and account for pest behavior, and the influence of human behavior and decision making in IRM. Provides insights from the history of insect resistance management (IRM) to the latest science Includes contributions from experts on ecological aspects of IRM, molecular and population genetics, economics, and IRM social issues Offers biochemistry and molecular genetics of insecticides presented with an emphasis on recent research Encourages scientists and stakeholders to implement and coordinate strategies based on local social conditions

  • Author : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press

Download or read book Genetically Engineered Crops written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetically engineered (GE) crops were first introduced commercially in the 1990s. After two decades of production, some groups and individuals remain critical of the technology based on their concerns about possible adverse effects on human health, the environment, and ethical considerations. At the same time, others are concerned that the technology is not reaching its potential to improve human health and the environment because of stringent regulations and reduced public funding to develop products offering more benefits to society. While the debate about these and other questions related to the genetic engineering techniques of the first 20 years goes on, emerging genetic-engineering technologies are adding new complexities to the conversation. Genetically Engineered Crops builds on previous related Academies reports published between 1987 and 2010 by undertaking a retrospective examination of the purported positive and adverse effects of GE crops and to anticipate what emerging genetic-engineering technologies hold for the future. This report indicates where there are uncertainties about the economic, agronomic, health, safety, or other impacts of GE crops and food, and makes recommendations to fill gaps in safety assessments, increase regulatory clarity, and improve innovations in and access to GE technology.
