Book Influence of Contact Cues on the Perception of the Oculogravic Illusion

Download or read book Influence of Contact Cues on the Perception of the Oculogravic Illusion written by Brant Clark and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the experiment was to study the influence of otolith and nonotolith information in the perception of the visual horizontal during rotation. Five normal men and five men with defective labyrinthine function acted as observers. All measurements were made in a room which could be rotated. Initial, static measurements were made while the men stood erect in the stationary room. Similar measurements were made during rotation while the observer stood on a platform set to the resultant horizontal with head and body aligned with resultant force. Data were also obtained with three other combinations of head and body position. This procedure was designed to produce two situations for the normal men in which otolith and nonotolith information were synergistic and three others in which they were antagonistic. The results showed that the perception of the visual horizontal during rotation in this situation is quite different from that found when the observer is rigidly supported in a chair during rotation. Settings to the visual horizontal during rotation were not systematically related to differences in head and body position nor were there significant differences between the normal and L-D men. The results show that nonotolith information predominates in this experimental situation. Furthermore, the data suggest that the spatial orientation of a pilot strapped in a cockpit may be somewhat different from his spatial orientation when he is standing on a rotating space platform. Book The Handbook of Multisensory Processes

Download or read book The Handbook of Multisensory Processes written by Gemma Calvert and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research is suggesting that rather than our senses being independent, perception is fundamentally a multisensory experience. This handbook reviews the evidence and explores the theory of broad underlying principles that govern sensory interactions, regardless of the specific senses involved.

Book The Effect of Water Immersion on Perception of the Oculogravic Illusion in Normal and Labyrinthine defective Subjects

Download or read book The Effect of Water Immersion on Perception of the Oculogravic Illusion in Normal and Labyrinthine defective Subjects written by Ashton Graybiel and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The separate and combined influences of otolith and nonotolith sensory inputs upon perception of the oculogravic illusion were investigated by maniuplating the visual and gravitoinertial force environments. By comparing the visually perceived direction of space by four naval aviators and four deaf persons with bilateral labyrinthine defects when dry and when immersed in water up to neck level, the contributions of (1) field force receptors in the vestibular organs and (2) nonvestibular proprioceptors stimulated by external contact support could be differentiated. Under these various conditions it was found that in normal persons, the vestibular contribution is predictable in terms of the direction of the gravitoinertial force vector but that the nonvestibular contribution varies; it may be relatively great or small. In persons with bilateral labyrinthine defects a nonvestibular contribution was always present but there was great individual variance. The significance of the findings in terms of tests measuring the function of the otolith organs is discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was designed to focus on the problems of perception and originally was to have been solely edited by Professor Hans-Lukas Teuber who was a member of the editorial board which initiated production of the Handbook. Accordingly, he issued invitations to a number of researchers III perception asking them to contribute chapters written in a style described III his words: " . . . Ire hope that no author lI'ill feel COl/strained to undertake a major search of the literature: he could In'ite, instead. on an area in which he has been quite actire himse?t~ and II'here most of the issues are immediately obt"ious to him. In this Iray, the IITiting of the chapter should be cnjoyable rather than a chore . . it should result in a personal account of the state of a given area rather than in an encyclopedic treatise . . . the field deserves this sort of summary ret'iell", particularly (f it is pointed toward the future and speeds the convergence of det'elopments in sensory physiology and psychological studies of perception, " With the growing burden of national and international commitments includ ing departmental headship, Professor Teuber felt that it would be wise to share the editorial responsibilities for this volume and accordingly, asked Professors Richard Held and Herschel Leibowitz to co-edit the volume with him in the same spirit as outlined in his invitation to authors. They agreed to help in this task.
