Book Infinite Refuge

Download or read book Infinite Refuge written by Virgil Suàrez and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ñSo much left behind. Our house. Our family. Our lives together,î Virgil Suàrez writes in his memoir of life as a Cuban refugee. Beginning with the saga of the balseros that unfolds before SuàrezÍs eyes, when, at his motherÍs insistence, he turns on the TV and witnesses a confrontation between the Coast Guard and the Cuban rafters, Suàrez draws his memories of his family and friendsÍ leaving Cuba and ties these through verse and prose to his experience of exile. Rather than decry the politics of persecution under a dictatorship or celebrate the freedoms enjoyed in the United States, Suàrez instead brings to life his memories on the page. Suàrez writes, ñThose old ghosts of places we knew, lived in moments we survived, those are the things IÍm afraid of.î But those old ghosts populate his stories: the shadows of his extended family standing on the other side of the glass at the departure gate in the airport, the next-door neighbor of his childhood with whom he plays firing squad, his motherÍs last wish to return to Cuba, and his promise to his father not to return until a change comes to Cuba. SuàrezÍs poignant tales of family disintegration, culture shock and separation are only matched by his examples of people struggling for the strength to live their modest lives and to preserve their memories in the face of the challenges of the new society around them. He sees in the raft people, in the dissidents, in the newly-minted American citizens? the same creative will that launched his own career as a writer.

Essays. California Interest. Women's Studies. REFUGE is a book of lyric essays about a young woman's life as a budding writer and an international development and aid worker. Spanning twelve years and multiple continents, it focuses in large part on her advocacy and theater work with refugees. From crossing the border into one of Syria's refugee camps in 2013; to an interview with a man who fled Aleppo for the peace and security of Sweden in 2015; to working in a sustainable forestry foundation near Siberia in 2003; to taking the train from Mongolia to China to visit the home and wife of an exiled writer in 2008; to founding a self-sustaining theater project with Congolese refugee women in a slum of Nairobi in 2013; to finding George Oppen's old typewriter in the attic of a farmhouse in Maine in 2004; to working as a nude model for artists' groups in college--the work these lyric essays illuminates is that of a twenty-something year old woman trying to find herself and her world by putting her body in places, within boundaries, others might not ever consider stepping foot inside of.

Book Peaceful Death Joyful Rebirth

Download or read book Peaceful Death Joyful Rebirth written by Tulku Thondup and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2006-12-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Healing Power of Mind draws on Buddhist scripture, firsthand accounts, and other sources to present an overview of Tibetan Buddhist teachings on facing death with openness and insight Buddhism teaches that death can be a springboard to enlightenment—yet for all but the most advanced meditators, it will be the gateway to countless future lives of suffering in samsara. Tulku Thondup wrote this guide to help us heal our fear and confusion about death and strengthen our practice in anticipation of this transition, and to help us realize the enlightened goal of ultimate peace and joy—not only for death and rebirth, but for this very lifetime. In simple language, he distills a vast range of sources, including scriptures, classic commentaries, oral teachings, and firsthand accounts. The book includes: • An overview of the dying process, the after-death bardo states, and teachings on why, where, and how we take rebirth • Accounts by Tibetan "near-death experiencers" (delogs), who returned from death with amazing reports of their visions • Ways to train our minds during life, so that at death, all the phenomena before us will arise as a world of peace, joy, and enlightenment • Simple meditations, prayers, and rituals to benefit the dead and dying • Advice for caregivers, helpers, and survivors of the dying By becoming intimate with this practice while we're alive, we can alleviate our fear of death, improve our appreciation of this life, and prepare for death in a very practical way, while planting the seeds for rebirth in the Pure Land.

Book excerpt: From Carlos Fonseca comes a dazzling novel about legacy, memory, and the desire to know and be known. Julio is a disillusioned professor of literature, a perpetual wanderer who has spent years away from his home, teaching in the United States. He receives a posthumous summons from an old friend, the writer Aliza Abravanel, to uncover the mysteries within her final novel. Aliza had raced to finish her work as her mind deteriorated. In her manuscript is a series of interconnected accounts of loss, tales that set Julio hurtling on a journey to uncover their true meaning. Austral tracks Julio’s trip from Aliza’s home in an Argentine artists’ colony to a forgotten city in Guatemala, to the Peruvian Amazon, and through Nueva Germania, the antisemitic commune in Paraguay founded by Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche. A story of mourning and return—to one’s native country, to one’s darkest memories, to oneself—Carlos Fonseca’s Austral interrogates the obsessions and upheavals faced by survivors of a rapidly globalizing world. A treasure map of intertwined experiences, each cleaving its own path through time, the novel is a fascinating investigation into the disappearance of culture and memory and a charting of the furthest limits of what language can do. With this remarkable exploration of the traces we leave behind, those we erase, and how we seek to rebuild, Carlos Fonseca confirms his status as one of the most powerful voices in contemporary Latin American literature.

Download or read book The Vedic Experience written by Raimundo Panikkar and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most stupendous manifestations of the Spirit is undoubtedly that which has been handed down to us under the generic name of the Vedas. The Vedas are still too much neglected not only in the world at large but also in their country of origin. this Vedic anthology will make direct and fruitful knowledge of the Vedas available to a wider range of people than the small elite of pandits and Indologists. This anthology collects the most crucial texts of the Indian Sacred Scriptures--in all more than 500--newly translated into contemporary English. Dr. Panikkar`s principle has been to select and place together texts so as to offer a selection of texts that cover the full range of `The Vedic Experience` and at the same time to show how they manifest the universal rhythms of nature, history, and Man. Excerpts are taken from the oldest hymns, such as the Rig Veda; from the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas, or Forest Treatises, and finally the Upanishads, which represent the mystical and philosophical culmination of the Vedas. This is a book for meditation, for reading, public and private, as well as for thorough study at this wellspring of human wisdom. It should, moreover, facilitate that meeting of East and West so long desired and delayed, and now so imperative.
