Download or read book An Infantryman s Guide to Combat in Built Up Areas FM 90 10 1 written by Department of Defense and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1993 printing. The urban growth in all areas of the world has changed the face of the battlefield. Military operations on urbanized terrain (MOUT) constitute the battlefield in the Eurasian continent. It includes all man-made features (cities, towns, villages) as well as natural terrain. Combat in built-up areas focuses on fighting for and in those cities, towns, and villages. The probability is great that United States forces will become engaged by enemy forces who are intermingled with the civilian population. Therefore, units using the techniques outlined in this manual under these conditions must obey the rules of engagement issued by their headquarters and the laws of land warfare. Infantry commanders and staffs should concentrate on the skills contained in Chapters 3 through 5 as they train their units. This manual provides the infantryman with guidelines and techniques for fighting against an organized enemy in built-up areas who may or may not be separated from the civilian population. Some techniques for dealing with insurgents, guerrillas, and terrorists are included; however, the manuals which best address these issues are FM 7-98 and FM 90-8. This manual does not address any techniques for missions that require the restoration of order to urban areas. Information and techniques to accomplish this mission are addressed in FM 19-15.

Book Breaking the Mold

Download or read book Breaking the Mold written by Kendall D. Gott and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few lessons are as prevalent in military history as is the adage that tanks don't perform well in cities. The notion of deliberately committing tanks to urban combat is anathema to most. In "Breaking the Mold: Tanks in the Cities," Ken Gott disproves that notion with a timely series of five case studies from World War II to the present war in Iraq. This is not a parochial or triumphant study. These cases demonstrate that tanks must do more than merely "arrive" on the battlefield to be successful in urban combat. From Aachen in 1944 to Fallujah in 2004, the absolute need for specialized training and the use of combined arms at the lowest tactical levels are two of the most salient lessons that emerge from this study. When properly employed, well-trained and well-supported units led by tanks are decisive in urban combat. The reverse also is true. Chechen rebels taught the Russian army and the world a brutal lesson in Grozny about what happens when armored units are poorly led, poorly trained, and cavalierly employed in a city. The case studies in this monograph are high-intensity battles in conflicts ranging from limited interventions to major combat operations. It would be wrong to use them to argue for the use of tanks in every urban situation. As the intensity of the operation decreases, the 2nd and 3rd order effects of using tanks in cities can begin to outweigh their utility. The damage to infrastructure caused by their sheer weight and size is just one example of what can make tanks unsuitable for every mission. Even during peace operations, however, the ability to employ tanks and other heavy armored vehicles can be crucial. "Breaking the Mold" provides an up-to-date analysis of the utility of tanks and heavy armored forces in urban combat. The U.S. Army will increasingly conduct combat operations in urban terrain, and it will be necessary to understand what it takes to employ tanks to achieve success in that battlefield environment.

Download or read book After Basic Training written by Nicholas Maniatis and published by . This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KEYNOTE: A practical guide to modern warfare, particularly relevant to today's fight against terrorism The War on Terror has embroiled the United States across the globe in asymmetric warfare environments. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines graduating today from basic training are in many ways fighting their fathers' war in Vietnam: booby traps in the form of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), inhospitable terrain, difficult and dangerous re-supply issues, and an enemy who attacks and disappears into the indigenous population. In order to counter these threats, every new and inexperienced soldier, be they cooks, truck drivers, mechanics, or infantrymen, must be prepared to engage the enemy in close combat whenever or however he attacks. After Basic Training: The New Soldier's Guide to Combat on the Modern Battlefield explains and teaches key tactics and information today's men and women must know to survive and thrive on today's battlefields. One of the main principles of asymmetric warfare is to attack the enemy at his weakest points. The forces of terror have proven adept at this tactic. It is the responsibility of every soldier to make sure he has mastered the basic combat skills needed to fight and destroy the enemy. Unit training only goes so far. Adherence to the Soldier's Creed, the Soldier's Code, and the Army Values, plus careful study and practice of all the basic combat skills required to fight and win on the modern battlefield, are some of the soldier's most basic tasks. Loaded with photos, charts, graphs, tables, and the insight gained through personal combat experience, former Army Captain Nicholas Maniatis's After Basic Training is exactly what today's warriors need to be better trained and prepared to accomplish their mission. This book should be required reading for everyone--before and after basic training and regardless of the branch of service. AUTHOR: Nicholas Maniatis is a fourteen-year veteran of the U.S. Army and a former Acting Deputy-Assistant Federal Security Director with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As an officer in the U.S. Army, Captain Maniatis has actively served in the War on Terror, including a tour in Iraq. He is a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and College and Towson University. photographs & charts
