Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infancy of Animals While most people find young animals "interesting," few perhaps realise how much more so they become when we ask the Why and the Wherefore of their several peculiarities of form and colour, and of the degrees of activity which they display on their entry into the world. The purpose of this book is to stimulate a wider interest in this theme, which contains food for thought not only for the Evolutionist, but also for the students of Sociology and of child-life in particular, and for that large and growing body who work under the banner of "Nature Study." In the space of a single small volume it was impossible to do more than make a selection from the vast array of animals whose young clamoured, so to speak, for attention; and it was often difficult to decide which of a dozen claimants best served my purpose. I trust that my critics will bear my difficulty in mind when tempted to take me to task for my sins of omission. But for the aid of the artist, and the photographer, my task would have been yet harder. And in this matter of illustrations I desire particularly to thank my friends Miss Helen Wilson, Mr. J. G. Millais, Mr. Rowland Ward, and Mr. A. H. Bishop, for their most kindly help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Aberrant Development in Infancy

Download or read book Aberrant Development in Infancy written by Norman R. Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, this volume deals with animals and human infants. The chapters reflect a mixture of issues and problems ranging from the significance of sucking responses in the newborn, the development of memory, effects of rearing conditions in monkeys, and brain damage in animals, to processes underlying abnormal development of language. While it appears the issues are diverse, there is actually a common theme. One question is posed: How and why does normal development fail to occur in some human infants? The chapters show that there are many causes of aberrations: physical or psychological trauma, disease, inheritance, and drugs. Although one may be primary, "multiple causation" would still appear to be a sound principle in developmental pathology.

Book SIDS Sudden Infant and Early Childhood Death

Download or read book SIDS Sudden Infant and Early Childhood Death written by Roger W. Byard and published by . This book was released on 2018-04 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers aspects of sudden infant and early childhood death, ranging from issues with parental grief, to the most recent theories of brainstem neurotransmitters. It also deals with the changes that have occurred over time with the definitions of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), SUDI (sudden unexpected death in infancy) and SUDIC (sudden unexpected death in childhood). The text will be indispensable for SIDS researchers, SIDS organisations, paediatric pathologists, forensic pathologists, paediatricians and families, in addition to residents in training programs that involve paediatrics. It will also be of use to other physicians, lawyers and law enforcement officials who deal with these cases, and should be a useful addition to all medical examiner/forensic, paediatric and pathology departments, hospital and university libraries on a global scale. Given the marked changes that have occurred in the epidemiology and understanding of SIDS and sudden death in the very young over the past decade, a text such as this is very timely and is also urgently needed.

Book The Girl With No Name

Download or read book The Girl With No Name written by Marina Chapman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, in a remote mountain village in South America, a little girl was abducted. She was four years old. Marina Chapman was stolen from her housing estate and abandoned deep in the Colombian jungle. That she survived is a miracle. Two days later, half-drugged, terrified, and starving, she came upon a troop of capuchin monkeys. Acting entirely on instinct, she tried to do what they did: copying their actions she slowly learned to fend for herself. So begins the story of her five years among the monkeys, during which time she gradually became feral; lost the ability to speak, lost all inhibition, lost any sense of being human, replacing human society with the social mores her new simian family. But society was eventually to reclaim her. At age ten she was discovered by a pair of hunters who took her to the lawless Colombian city of Cucuta where, in exchange for a parrot, they sold her to a brothel. When she learned that she was to be groomed for prostitution, she made her plans to escape. But her adventure was not over yet... In the vein of Slumdog Millionaire and City of God, this rousing story of a lost child who overcomes the dangers of the wild to finally reclaim her life will astonish readers everywhere.

Book Progress in Infancy Research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Progress in Infancy Research Series is dedicated to the presentation of innovative and exciting research on infants, both human and animal. Each volume in the series is designed to stand alone and contains autonomous chapters which are based on high quality programs of research with infants. These chapters integrate the work of the authors with that of other experts working in the same or related areas. The authors wish to present high quality critical syntheses bearing on infant perception and sensation, learning and memory processes, and other aspects of development. This series will be a forum for the presentation of technological breakthroughs, methodological advances, and new integrations that might create platforms for future programmatic work on the complexities of infant behavior and development. Each volume in the series is dedicated to an outstanding investigator whose research has illuminated the nature of infant behavior and development, and whose contributions to the field have been of seminal importance.
