Book North South Trade Employment and Inequality

Download or read book North South Trade Employment and Inequality written by Adrian Wood and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1994-02-17 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on three fields of economics (international, labour, and development), this study shows that expansion of North-South trade in manufactures has had a far greater impact on labour markets than earlier work suggested. In the South, unskilled workers have benefited most from this trade, but in the North, the gains have been concentrated on skilled labour, while unskilled workers have suffered falling wages and rising unemployment. This decline in the economic position of unskilled workers has increased inequality, and aggravated crime and other forms of social erosion, on both sides of the Atlantic. The failure of Northern governments to recognize that trade with the South has these adverse side-effects, and to take appropriate counter-measures, has fuelled the rise of protectionism - the worst possible response, which slows economic progress in both regions. The best solution for the longer term in the North is more investment in education, to raise the supply of skilled labour. However, the benefits of this investment will emerge slowly. During the next one or two decades, Professor Wood argues, other measures are also urgently needed to boost the demand for, and incomes of, unskilled workers.

This non-technical introduction to development studies explores the dynamics of socio-economic development and stagnation in developing countries. Thoroughly updated and revised, this second edition includes new material on the effects of the 2008 financial crisis, the emergence of the BRICS economies, the role of institutions in development and the accelerated growth of economies in Africa and Asia. Taking a comparative approach, Szirmai places contemporary debates within their broader contexts and combines insights and theories from economics, economic history, political science, anthropology and sociology. Each chapter includes comparative statistics and time series for thirty-one developing countries. Assuming no prior knowledge of economics, this book is well-suited for students in interdisciplinary development studies and development economics, for policy-makers and for practitioners pursuing careers in developing countries. Download or read book World Metal Demand written by John E. Tilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, the post-World War II boom in world metal consumption came to a halt. As time passed, it became clear that what many first thought to be a cyclical downturn was instead a long-term, substantial decline in world metal demand. In this volume, first published in 1990, editor John E. Tilton and four fellow scholars of mineral economics analyse the causes and consequences of this decline and the prospects for future growth in world metal demand. This book will be of interest to students of business and environmental studies.

Book China s Industrial State owned Enterprises Between Profitability and Bankruptcy

Download or read book China s Industrial State owned Enterprises Between Profitability and Bankruptcy written by Carsten Holz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of declining profitability, China's industrial state-owned enterprises appear obsolete. This study relies on extensive data and quantitative analysis to examine the reasons for the decline in profitability, to ascertain their current profitability patterns across various dimensions, and to account for any profitability gap with enterprises in other ownership forms. Recent reform measures are also evaluated. A differentiated picture emerges which seeks to make past developments comprehensible and illuminate the prospects of the reform of industrial state-owned enterprises in China.
