Book Manufacturing Consent

Download or read book Manufacturing Consent written by Michael Burawoy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1930s, industrial sociologists have tried to answer the question, Why do workers not work harder? Michael Burawoy spent ten months as a machine operator in a Chicago factory trying to answer different but equally important questions: Why do workers work as hard as they do? Why do workers routinely consent to their own exploitation? Manufacturing Consent, the result of Burawoy's research, combines rich ethnographical description with an original Marxist theory of the capitalist labor process. Manufacturing Consent is unique among studies of this kind because Burawoy has been able to analyze his own experiences in relation to those of Donald Roy, who studied the same factory thirty years earlier. Burawoy traces the technical, political, and ideological changes in factory life to the transformations of the market relations of the plant (it is now part of a multinational corporation) and to broader movements, since World War II, in industrial relations.

Book Energy and Electricity in Industrial Nations

Download or read book Energy and Electricity in Industrial Nations written by Allan Mazur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy is at the top of the list of environmental problems facing industrial society, and is arguably the one that has been handled least successfully, in part because politicians and the public do not understand the physical technologies, while the engineers and industrialists do not understand the societal forces in which they operate. In this book, Allan Mazur, an engineer and a sociologist, explains energy technologies for nontechnical readers and analyses the sociology of energy. The book gives an overview of energy policy in industrialised countries including analysis of climate change, the development of electricity, forms of renewable energy and public perception of the issues. Energy is a key component to environment policy and to the workings of industrial society. This novel approach to energy technology and policy makes the book an invaluable inter-disciplinary resource for students across a range of subjects, from environmental and engineering policy, to energy technology, public administration, and environmental sociology and economics.

Book Disenfranchised

Download or read book Disenfranchised written by Joel Andreas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following World War II, factories in many countries not only provided secure employment and a range of economic entitlements, but also recognized workers as legitimate stakeholders, enabling them to claim rights to participate in decision making and hold factory leaders accountable. In recent decades, as employment has become more precarious, these attributes of industrial citizenship have been eroded and workers have increasingly been reduced to hired hands. As Joel Andreas shows in Disenfranchised, no country has experienced these changes as dramatically as China. Drawing on a decade of field research, including interviews with both factory workers and managers, Andreas traces the changing political status of workers inside Chinese factories from 1949 to the present, carefully analyzing how much power they have actually had to shape their working conditions.

Book Sociology of Organizations

Download or read book Sociology of Organizations written by Antonio Lucas Marín and published by Antonio Lucas Marín. This book was released on with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizations are one of the characteristic elements of more modern societies. The complexity of social life and the difficulty of intended social objetives require that individuals should join their fellow men to try to achieve them. It is not easy to understand ordinary life without making continuous references to organizations, which act as extensions of man to reach certain difficult goals. The study of organizations has been a significant part of the effort exerted by social sciences to rationallize social life in the Twentieth century; it can be predicted that it will be increasingly important. Factories, companies, and organizations have often been successive ways of organizing work from the beginning of industrialization up to our days. We are ever more aware of the importance of organizations in our lives. Sociology, which paid attention to the phenomenon of factories from the very beginning, has continued to be concerned about the study of organizations. We will see here some aspects of that study.
