Book Technical Change and Employment in the British Printing Industry

Download or read book Technical Change and Employment in the British Printing Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the impact of technical change on employment in the British printing industry. within this overall objective .one of the main purposes is to investigate the attitudes of employers, employees, and equipment suppliers to the introduction of new technology. The research was carried out by a comprehensive literature survey in relation to: international trade, employment, and competitiveness; technical change and industrial relations; management attitudes/behaviour in relation to innovation; and management qualifications. And by in-depth interviews with representatives from the three groups. Much research on the National Newspaper sector in the past has been applied to the whole of printing despite the fact that the unit size of that sector is considerably greater than the rest of the industry; and that· less than 10% of those working in the industry work in the National Newspaper sector. Little research has been done on other areas of the industry. This research is primarily concerned with these other sectors, and the attitudes and behaviour of those working there with regard to technical change. This research has found the analogy with the newspaper industry is misplaced, a substantial majority of employees viewing the introduction of new technology as desirable and vital to maintaining and/or improving competitiveness. The problem as they see it is how this is achieved. In common with other post-war industrial studies on management attitudes and behaviour with regards to innovation and investment, this industry was also found to be generally conservative and short-term in its planning and organisational methods. British manufacturers of printing press and post-press equipment were generally found to-be lacking in innovation and long-term developmental strategies, though British companies pre-press, were found to be at least as R&D intensive and innovative as their overseas competitors.

These attempts were through the Industrial Council (1911–13), the Whitley Committee, Report and Scheme (1916–39), the National Industrial Conference (1919–21) and the Conference on Industrial Reorganisation and Industrial Relations (1928–9).

Book British Industrial Relations

Download or read book British Industrial Relations written by Gill Palmer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-21 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Industrial Relations (1983) provides a comprehensive and balanced approach to British industrial relations, an often controversial subject with a variety of academic interpretations which achieved a large significance in national politics. The author draws on political and social theory to explain both the state of British industrial relations in the 1980s and the conflicting prescriptions for change. Trade unions and collective bargaining are placed in the context of the inevitable development of group negotiation within complex organisations. The often neglected importance of management strategy in the design of work and in the development of the British system is emphasised and different interpretations on the state’s role in industrial relations are fully explored. This book has a broad ranging approach, using the latest developments in political, labour process, trade union and organisation theories relevant to the understanding of industrial relations. British institutions are the main focus of study but illustrations from Japan, the USA and Germany are also used and the importance of an historical perspective is underlined.

Book Labor in the Era of Globalization

Download or read book Labor in the Era of Globalization written by Clair Brown and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third quarter of the twentieth century was a golden age for labor in the advanced industrial countries, characterized by rising incomes, relatively egalitarian wage structures, and reasonable levels of job security. The subsequent quarter-century has seen less positive performance along a number of these dimensions. This period has instead been marked by rapid globalization of economic activity that has brought increased insecurity to workers. The contributors to this volume distinguish four explanations for this historic shift. These include 1) rapid development of new technologies; 2) global competition for both business and labor; 3) deregulation of industry with more reliance on markets; and 4) increased immigration of workers, especially unskilled workers, from developing countries. In addition to analyzing the causes of these trends, the contributors also investigate important consequences, ranging from changes in collective bargaining and employment relations to family formation decisions and incarceration policy.
