Book Researching the World of Work

Download or read book Researching the World of Work written by George Strauss and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first on industrial relations research methods, comes at a time when the field of industrial relations is in flux and research strategy has become more complex and varied. Research that once focused on the relationship between labor and management now involves a wider range of issues. This change has raised a number of key questions about how research should be done. The contributors represent four countries and a range of fields, including economics, sociology, psychology, law, history, and industrial relations. They identify distinctive research strategies and suggest approaches that might be appropriate in the future. Among their concerns are the relative value of qualitative and quantitative methods, of using primary and secondary data, and of single versus multimethod techniques.

As a relatively new area of study in Australia, the teaching and research of industrial relations are still in their formative stages. This bibliography, which traces developments in these areas in a number of countries, will assist those active in this formative process. It will also act as a research tool for students and in the development of industrial relations theories and models.

Book Industrial Relations in Japan

Download or read book Industrial Relations in Japan written by Norma Chalmers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional picture of industry and industrial relations in Japan is of a number of very large firms providing extremely attractive working conditions for their happy and contented workforce. Norma Chalmers shows that there is in fact another, very different side to the picture, which occurs in the the peripheral sector. Here, conditions are often poor, wages very low and continuity of employment virtually non-existent. There are many small firms where the effectiveness of worker organisation and bargaining declines as the firm's size and proximity to the industrial centre decrease. Moreover, as Chalmers shows, the peripheral sector is very large, and the conventional picture of the model workforce should probably be confined to a few flagship companies. The book argues that the model nature of the large firms may stem in part from the fact that they are able to off-load problems onto smaller firms who produce the components necessary for the large firm sector at disadvantageous subcontract terms.

Book Teachers Unions and the Politics of Education in Japan

Download or read book Teachers Unions and the Politics of Education in Japan written by Robert W. Aspinall and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2001-08-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an overview of the history of postwar teachers' unions in Japan, this book analyses the causes and effects of the 1989 schism of the largest union, the Japan Teachers' Union (Nikkyoso). Formed in 1947 during a period of great change for both the Japanese educational and political systems, this union has been closely linked with developments in both of these areas. The 1989 schism occurred at the start of another period of great change for politics and education. Author Robert W. Aspinall uses several theoretical models to discuss the schism and then offers modifications of the theoretical models to account for political changes that have occurred since they were created. He also places the fortunes of the union in the wider context of Japanese unionism and party politics, examines the role of teachers' unions at all levels of the education hierarchy, and describes the role of unions in the current wave of educational reform.
