Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial-Commercial Geography of the United States This book is not a technical treatise upon the indus tries discussed, but simply an attempt to describe, in a clear and simple way, some of the every - day features, as well as some of the unusual things, that belong to these industries. I have attempted to keep constantly in view the human elements of the stories. At the same time, the leading thought has been to emphasize the importance of these activities, as carried on in the United States. The student is free to investigate their existence in other countries should he desire to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Great Cities of the United States written by Gertrude Van Duyn Southworth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Cities of the United States: Historical, Descriptive, Commercial Industrial Just as the history of a country is largely the history of its great men, so the geography of a country is largely the story of its great cities. How much more easily history is grasped and remembered when grouped around attractive biographies. With great cities as the centers of geography-study, what is generally considered a dry, matter-of-fact subject can be made to attract, to inspire, and to fix the things which should be remembered. This book, "Great Cities of the United States," includes the ten largest cities of this country, together with San Francisco, New Orleans, and Washington. In it the important facts of our country's geography have been grouped around these thirteen cities. The story of Chicago includes the story of farming in the Middle West, of the great ore industry on and around the Great Lakes, and of the varied means of transportation. Cotton, sugar, and location are shown to account largely for the greatness of New Orleans. In a similar way, the stories of the other cities sum up the important geography of our country. Enough of the history of each city is given to show its growth and development. The distinctive points of interest are described so that one feels acquainted with the things which attract the sight-seer. Lakes, but, since the navigation of the St. Lawrence River has been improved, with all the rest of the world. In the matter of railroad advantages no other city surpasses Chicago. For these reasons the flour which is made there is easily marketed. Kansas. Kansas is profiting much from the westward movement of wheat raising and manufacturing. Between 1900 and 1905 its milling industry almost doubled, and in the latter year ranked second among the industries of the state in the value of its product. The mills are not concentrated in any one city or in any one part of the state, but there are a number of important centers, such as Atchison, Leavenworth, Topeka, and Wichita. Missouri. Missouri is also becoming an important flour-milling state, having come up from sixth place in 1900 to third place in 1905. Here, too, flour milling is the second industry in importance, coming next to slaughtering and meat packing. St. Louis, its chief city, has long been recognized as a center of trade because of its position on the Mississippi, and to-day its railway facilities are even greater than the advantages offered by that great waterway. Missouri's success illustrates the fact that it is cheaper to manufacture wheat in or near the wheat belt, and to send the flour, rather than the raw product, to market. Marketing The business of marketing the products manufactured from wheat, such as flour and stock feed, the former being the more important, has come to be a large one, and is greatly helped by our rapid and cheap transportation system. There was a time when each state produced nearly enough wheat to feed its own population; but through division of labor and specialization, various industries have come to be centered in the places best suited to...

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial and Industrial Geography a d104 Book for Schools, Colleges, and Private Reference The rapid expansion of the foreign trade and the increasing domestic commerce of the United States have made it necessary for the business man to inform himself as to the kind, quantity and value of the various natural and manufactured products that are bought and sold in the markets of the world. It is also desirable for him to know why certain countries have controlled certain lines of trade in the past and whether present conditions are such that he may compete successfully in the world's neutral markets. The author is daily called upon to answer questions coming from students, teachers and business men bearing upon such topics touching the industry and commerce of the world. In the preparation of this book it is assumed that the student already has a fair knowledge of political and physical geography. Commodities are first treated separately following the classification given in the United States Government reports. The processes of manufacture of some of the more important articles are incidentally given in order to aid in understanding any peculiarities in them affecting the course of trade. The countries in each continent are next considered in the order of their importance to the trade of the United States. The physical and other conditions affecting trade are also considered as well as the weights and measures, the currency, and the languages in use in each country. Trade routes, government revenues, aids to commerce, instruments of exchange, and the metric system, and their effect upon commerce are treated in separate chapters. Statistics are used only to the extent necessary to show the relative importance of the various commodities and different countries engaged in the world's trade. For United States imports and exports those of the fiscal years ending June 30 are given, as these are the only periods for which complete statistics are published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Commercial Geography There can be no doubt of the fact, if We are to be consistent with our interpretation of geography as expressed in the preceding volume of this series, that the main feature of the geography study in the last class of the elementary school is the commercial phase. The trade of the world, including as does practically all the activities of the human race, is of a scope tremendous in its meaning. Only by a study of it can the relation of the human species to its natural environment be appreciated. In it is involved the greatest of all geograph ical causal relations. The student should be brought to feel the rivalry and interplay of nations in this greatest of all games, the constant struggle for a goodly and increasing portion of international commerce. Download or read book The Geography of Commerce and Industry Classic Reprint written by W. F. Rocheleau and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of Commerce and Industry You have long since learned that the sur land and water face of the earth is composed of land and water and that there is practically three times as much water as land. Probably you have also learned that the land and water are very unequally distributed, the greater part of the land lying north of the Equator and the greater part of the water lying south of it; but you may not have considered the relations which these condi tions sustain to human life, occupations and commerce. Unequal distm_ Of the fourteen hundred million people liv Ing upon the earth about one-half live upon Bunon 0f FE less than one-seventh of its surface. The principal causes for this unequal distribution of life are climate and the condition of the earth's surface. Animals are compelled to live in the regions that produce their food. Man only can live away from the sources of his food supply, because he alone has devised means for transporting what he needs to any locality in which he desires to dwell. Some animals feed upon plants, and some upon other animals. Those animals that furnish food for others, themselves feed upon plants; therefore the animal life of a locality is determined by its plant life, and even man finds it to his advantage to dwell in those portions of the earth where his supply of food is abundant and easily obtained. The most important features of climate are temper climate ature and rainfall. As these are, so are the vegeta tion, animal life and people. In general, the earth is divided climatically into the tropical, temperate and polar regions. The tropical regions are characterized by high temperatures, and in some localities an abundance of rainfall, and in others almost an entire absence of rainfall. Where there is an abundance of rainfall we find the most luxuriant vegetation. The regions best illustrating these condi tions of life are found in the valleys of the Amazon and Kongo Rivers. In the forests of the Amazon the trees grow to an enormous size, and twining and climbing plants and undergrowth form thickets so dense that it is impossible to penetrate them. Here also are myriads of insects of the most gorgeous hues and birds of brilliant plumage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
