Download or read book Zen Life written by Evgeny Steiner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Japanese culture of the Muromachi epoch (14–16 centuries) with Ikkyū Sōjun (1394–1481) as its focal point. Ikkyū’s contribution to the culture of his time was all-embracing and unique. He can be called the embodiment of his era, given that all the features typical for the Japanese culture of the High Middle Ages were concentrated in his personality. This multidisciplinary study of Ikkyū’s artistic, religious, and philosophical heritage reconstructs his creative mentality and his way of life. The aesthetics and art of Ikkyū are shown against a broad historical background. Much emphasis is given to Ikkyū’s interpretation of Zen. The book discusses in great detail Ikkyū’s religious and ethical principles, as well as his attitude towards sex, and shows that his rebellious and iconoclastic ways were deeply embedded in the tradition. The book pulls together materials from cultural and religious history with literary and visual artistic texts, and offers a multifaceted view on Ikkyū, as well as on the cultural life of the Muromachi period. This approach ensures that the book will be interesting for art historians, historians of literature and religion, and specialists in cultural and visual studies.

Book From Summetria to Symmetry The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept

Download or read book From Summetria to Symmetry The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept written by Giora Hon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many literary critics seem to think that an hypothesis about obscure and remote questions of history can be refuted by a simple demand for the production of more evidence than in fact exists. The demand is as easy to make as it is impossible to satisfy. But the true test of an hypothesis, if it cannot be shown to con?ict with known truths, is the number of facts that it correlates and explains. Francis M. Cornford [1914] 1934, 220. It was in the autumn of 1997 that the research project leading to this publication began. One of us [GH], while a visiting fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science (University of Pittsburgh), gave a talk entitled, “Proportions and Identity: The Aesthetic Aspect of Symmetry”. The presentation focused on a confusion s- rounding the concept of symmetry: it exhibits unity, yet it is often claimed to reveal a form of beauty, namely, harmony, which requires a variety of elements. In the audience was the co-author of this book [BRG] who responded with enthusiasm, seeking to extend the discussion of this issue to historical sources in earlier periods. A preliminary search of the literature persuaded us that the history of symmetry was rich in possibilities for new insights into the making of concepts. John Roche’s brief essay (1987), in which he sketched the broad outlines of the history of this concept, was particularly helpful, and led us to conclude that the subject was worthy of monographic treatment.

Book Atopic Dermatitis Inside Out or Outside In

Download or read book Atopic Dermatitis Inside Out or Outside In written by Lawrence S Chan and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is one of the most common and most challenging skin conditions, for patients and practitioners alike. Uniquely organized by intrinsic and extrinsic etiologies, Atopic Dermatitis: Inside Out or Outside In? examines a myriad of causes that start from both the inside of the body and from the external environment, offering physicians practical ways to design treatments that specifically address these causes. Drs. Lawrence S. Chan and Vivian Y. Shi, along with a team of expert contributing authors, examine the etiology of this complex disorder and provide targeted, comprehensive solutions and the most useful therapeutic plans based on pathophysiology, including evidence-based integrative management. Analyzes the pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis from two distinct fronts: inside out and outside in—an approach that is unique in the field. Begins with an overview of the disease, then delves into both internal and external pathogenic factors, followed by the Clinician’s Corner, which offers practical recommendations for treatment. Organizes therapeutic discussions by corresponding pathophysiology rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Covers recently FDA-approved and emerging medications, as well as atopic comorbidities.

Book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms

Download or read book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms written by Lewis Hodous and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-18 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable interpretive tool, first published in 1937, is now available for the first time in a paperback edition specially aimed at students of Chinese Buddhism. Those who have endeavoured to read Chinese texts apart from the apprehension of a Sanskrit background have generally made a fallacious interpretation, for the Buddhist canon is basically translation, or analogous to translation. In consequence, a large number of terms existing are employed approximately to connote imported ideas, as the various Chinese translators understood those ideas. Various translators invented different terms; and, even when the same term was finally adopted, its connotation varied, sometimes widely, from the Chinese term of phrase as normally used by the Chinese. For instance, klésa undoubtedly has a meaning in Sanskrit similar to that of, i.e. affliction, distress, trouble. In Buddhism affliction (or, as it may be understood from Chinese, the afflicters, distressers, troublers) means passions and illusions; and consequently fan-nao in Buddhist phraseology has acquired this technical connotation of the passions and illusions. Many terms of a similar character are noted in the body of this work. Consequent partly on this use of ordinary terms, even a well-educated Chinese without a knowledge of the technical equivalents finds himself unable to understand their implications.
