The extraordinary textiles in this book are from the collections of Rudolf Smend and Donald Harper. Most date from the period 1880 to 1930 when the art of batik reached its apogee. Having collected historical batik for over thirty years and published two books on the subject, Rudolf Smend has invited his friend and fellow batik specialist Donald Harper to contribute his fine collection to this publication as well. None of the batik in this book have been published before. They represent an exquisite cross-section of the batik production of Java--the most important batik-producing region in the world. The cloths are complemented by vintage photographs from the first quarter of the 20th century demonstrating how the batik were worn at court and at home. Three are from museums in Dresden and Cologne, while three are from the private collection of Leo Haks. The others have been collected over the past 30 years from private sources in Java. The captions are by Maria Wronska-Friend, an ethnologist and batik expert who frequently visits Indonesian batik centers and has worked for many years as an anthropologist in Papua New Guinea. Her contributions provide fundamental knowledge for lovers of this art form while at the same time providing new insights for experts. Rudolf Smend has invited other batik aficionados of his generation to share their passion for batik in this book. Inger McCabe Elliott, author of the bestselling Batik: Fabled Cloth of Java has contributed her lifelong experience. Other authorities like Annegret Haake, Brigitte Khan Majlis and Jonathan Hope share their views and expertise in these pages. Book excerpt: The word ’batik’ is possibly of Malay origin from the word ’tik’ meaning ’to drip’ or ’to drop.’ The term is applied to a resist dye technique invented independently in locations as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Japan and Turkestan. Batik is a remarkably flexible textile technique and is suited to small-scale methods of production, but demand from the fashion and tourism industries is increasing. This volume brings together the experiences and concerns of the international community of batik producers. It gives voice to their suggestions for ensuring that the producers of this traditional craft are integrated into its increasingly global production rather than excluded from it. Building on the work of batik designers and producers the book discusses the emergence of a global craft consciousness. Batik producers report on innovative measures taken both individually and collectively to hold their market position while commercial producers frequently annex and mass-produce traditional batik design. The author argues that although the use of IPRs to safeguard ICH presents challenges and has impeded sustainable development in some cases, the adoption of these rights on ICH also presents opportunities and, fundamentally, is not contrary to the spirit of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO 2003 Convention). The adoption of IPRs on ICH can form an important part of the development of sustainable safeguarding plans capable of benefitting the communities, groups and individuals (CGIs) that create, maintain and transmit such heritage. The book provides a nuanced analysis of the relationship between intellectual property (IP) law and ICH as well as examining the role of IPRs in safeguarding ICH through the lens of sustainable development. It analyses the relationship between IP law and ICH from environmental, social and economic perspectives. These perspectives allow a thorough evaluation of both the positive effects and potential pitfalls of adopting IPRs to safeguard ICH. The book addresses deeper structural matters that refer back to the safeguarding of social and environmental processes underlying ICH.

Travel to any island and the natives will use their local language for commerce and daily activities. Its diversity of language and culture reflects its origins as different migrations took place over millennia and settled here. The country has the largest Muslim population in the world, but the origins of its religious identity reflect Islamic traders introducing the religion and then giving preferential business opportunities to those accepting Islam. The exception to Islam is Bali, a Hindu enclave amidst a population with a very different belief. This unique subset evokes the magic of the exotic and romantic, a curious blend found nowhere else. Indonesia's early history reflects the great Mataram Empire, an empire that extended the boundaries of today's country and whose power and reach serve as the country's idealized state, even to the limits of today's boundaries. That empire ended with the arrival of the Europeans, first with the Portuguese, and then the Dutch. Dutch colonial presence extended for 350 years, broken only by a brief English presence, and later by Japanese Imperial forces during World War Two. Within days of the Japanese surrender, Indonesia declared its independence. But post-World War Two Dutch colonial presence returned and a four-year guerrilla war and diplomatic effort resulted in the Dutch capitulating and withdrawing from the Archipelago. Independence brought many challenges to the country. Five unifying concepts, known as Pancasila, are taught to every citizen from grade school onward, creating a national identity. The challenge of Pancasila is that only six religions are recognized; all others must align themselves with an approved religion, or stand beyond governmental protection. Indonesia sits astride the Ring of Fire, on some of the most powerful volcanoes in the world. Every Indonesian readily identifies with the volcanoes nearest them. Volcanic activity, evacuating for safety and realizing that volcanoes destroy and also enrich the soil marks each islander's deep respect for the destructive power and later fecundity of that eruption. To understand the natural phenomena taking place beneath our feet, I begin with a review of Earth's plate tectonics and its system of subduction. Volcanic activity is a constant in Indonesia, with different plates shifting and causing changes on the surface. This analysis and review discuss Indonesian history, its long subjugation by the Dutch, and its recent rise as an independent and self-sufficient government. The country prospers from its extensive natural resources, while the UNESCO site of Borobudur in Central Java, together with Temples Pawon and Mendut entice visitors throughout the world. I was privileged to visit Indonesia several times, appreciating its people, its distinctive Batik fabric as well the wide cultural diversity of these special people. I hope this review does justice to the country and its unique people.

Thus, social adjustment is required for resilience in order to adapt to and change in the face of adversity. In other words, it is clear that social adjustment, which includes the specific behaviors and abilities that people use to deal with daily problems and adapt to changing circumstances, is critical for global resilience today. As such, this international conference, which will feature five invited keynote speakers from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Indonesia, and Japan is intended to serve as a forum for the dissemination of specific alternative and significant breakthroughs in rapid social adjustments for global resilience, with an emphasis on global society, social welfare and development, and innovative communication, among other topics. Therefore, we invite scholars, academics, researchers, experts, practitioners, and university students to participate and share perspectives, experiences, and research findings by submitting papers on a variety of topics relevant to the conference’s theme and scope. All abstracts and papers submitted for consideration will undergo a double-blind peer review process to ensure their quality, relevance, and originality.
