Simposium ini tidak hanya menghadirkan beberapa pembicara dari Indonesia, tetapi juga pembicara internasional dari Jepang, Malaysia, Perancis, Turki, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Amerika Serikat dan Kairo. Tahun ini, (ISETiD 2021) telah menerima 75 artikel dan makalah baik dari civitas akademika internal maupun eksternal di Universitas Andi Djemma, Palopo, Indonesia. Semua artikel akan diterbitkan berdasarkan hasil seleksi oleh reviewer di IOP, jurnal dan buku abstrak yang diterbitkan. Book excerpt: The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) is the most interesting phenomenon in contemporary Indonesian politics. Not only is it growing rapidly in membership and electoral support, it is also bringing a new and markedly different approach to Islamic politics, one which has no precedent in Indonesian history. Understanding PKS and analysing its political behaviour presents challenges to scholars and observers. This is partly due to the fact that the party represents a new trend within Indonesian Islam which has few parallels with preceding movements. Yon Machmudi has rendered us a valuable service. In this book, he provides a thoughtful and authoritative context for viewing PKS. He critiques the existing categorisations for Indonesian Islam and points to their inadequacy when describing the PKS and the campus-based Tarbiyah movement from which it sprang. He reworks the santri typology, dividing it into convergent, radical and global substreams. This offers new possibilities for explaining the PKS phenomenon and assists in differentiating between various types of Islamic revivalism in contemporary Indonesia. It also allows a more understanding of the accommodatory stance which PKS has towards the state and other political forces. Yon's text provides a good overview of the development of PKS from its Tarbiyah movement origins to its impressive success at the 2004 general elections. It considers the party's attitude towards the issues of sharia implementation and community welfare and closes by examining the future challenges facing PKS. It is a well written and authoritative account from a scholar who has done wideranging research on the party.

The cooperation continued to grow and expand in various fields. While political and economic fields remain the arenas where the ties between China and Indonesia predominantly revolved, 2022 witnessed numerous developments in the soft-power fields. These included China’s growing media influence and its public diplomacy towards the Muslim community aimed to augment its positive image among Indonesians. Such efforts appeared to be a response to the fact that in recent years Indonesians’ view of China has not been positive. In the 2022's survey, there was a decline in the public's positive feelings towards China decreased significantly compared to five years ago. This sentiment is rooted not only in the country’s long history of anti-China sentiment, which has been exacerbated by Chinese incursions in the South China Sea, but mainly in its ill-treatment of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. As in the previous two years, this book aims to understand the various dynamics in the relationship between China and Indonesia throughout 2022. It analyses crucial episodes in Beijing-Jakarta cooperation that took place in the past year and attempts to offer recommendations that can be taken by government actors, business actors, and other relevant stakeholders in order to ensure that the relationship is mutually beneficial for both countries.

Drawing on anthropological perspectives and 14 months of participant observation between 2009 and 2013 in the multi-religious Javanese city of Salatiga, this ethnography examines the interrelations between Islamic piety, Christian identity, and gendered sociability in a time of multiple religious revivals. The novel encounters between multiple forms of piety and customary sociality among “moderate” Muslims, puritan Salafists, born-again Pentecostals, Protestants, and Catholics require citizens to renegotiate various social interactions. En-Chieh Chao argues that piety has become a complex phenomenon entangled with gendered sociality and religious others, rather than a preordained outcome stemming from a self-contained religious tradition.

Likewise, in democratization, religion gives society the necessary dynamic thrust to maintain its vibrancy, resiliency, and sustainability. This Symposium is therefore expected to delve into the complexity of how religion, religious values and faith communities confront the contemporary challenges to uphold ethics and human dignity. We strongly believe that ISRL conference provides a good forum for all academicians, researcher, developers and practitioners to discuss all religious Life, ethics and human dignity. We also expect that the future ISRL conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.

Book excerpt: In Globalizing in Hard Times, Leonardo Martinez-Diaz examines the sudden and substantial increase in cross-border ownership of commercial banks in countries where bank ownership had long been restricted by local rules. Many parties—the World Bank and the IMF, the world's largest commercial banks, their home governments, and their negotiators—had been pushing for a relaxation of ownership rules since the early 1980s and into the 1990s, when bank profitability levels in advanced industrial societies went flat. In their hunt for higher returns on assets, the major banks looked to expand business overseas, but through the mid-1990s their efforts to impose more liberal ownership regimes in nationalist countries proved largely unsuccessful.Martinez-Diaz illustrates the ongoing political resistance to liberalized ownership rules in Mexico, Indonesia, Brazil, and South Korea. He then demonstrates the importance of a series of events—the Mexican crisis and the Brazilian banking shock in 1994–1995 and the Asian crisis of 1997–1998 among them—in finally knocking down barriers to foreign ownership of banks. After these upheavals, policymakers who were worried about their political survival—and who were sometimes pressed by the IMF and foreign governments—reshaped the regulatory environment in key emerging markets. Self-proclaimed global banks eagerly grasped the opportunity to expand their operations worldwide, but after the initial shock, domestic politics reasserted themselves, often diluting the new, liberal rules.
