Book The Jokowi Prabowo Elections 2 0

Download or read book The Jokowi Prabowo Elections 2 0 written by Made Supriatma and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 17 April 2019, Indonesians marched to the polls to elect their president and vice president directly for the fourth time since 2004. The main contenders for the presidency—Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo Subianto—were the same as when they first clashed in 2014, and the result was the same. Some of the issues raised in 2014 were rehashed in 2019, and the geographical polarization of voters had deepened along the same fault lines. There is a case for arguing that 2019 was a replay of the 2014 elections, hence the title of this book. But “2.0” also signifies progression, since nothing is ever exactly the same. 2019 has seen the intensification of cyber-politics, and the curious outcome where former opponents on the electoral battlefield, as featured on the cover of this book, ended up as colleagues in the same cabinet. This volume provides incisive analyses of the dynamics of the elections from multiple perspectives, from what is new (cyber-politics) to what persists (identity politics), from the constituencies that cut across national demographics to the regions and their peculiarities. The insights drawn out in this volume will serve as a guide for understanding the next presidential and parliamentary elections in 2024 and beyond.

Book The Year of Voting Frequently

Download or read book The Year of Voting Frequently written by Margaret J. Kartomi and published by Monash University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Year of Voting Frequently examines the period of time throughout 2004, when 147 million Indonesians chose their first directly elected president and national and regional legislative candidates. Unlike polls under former near-dictator Suharto, many rural and urban citizens engaged in genuine vigorous political activity. Performance was unusually prominent. Politicians performed as artists, artists performed as politicians, politicians appeared with popular artists, and many touring troupes encouraged Indonesians to vote. The Year of Voting Frequently examines the role of the performing arts in politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Candidate's Dilemma, Elisabeth Kramer tells the story of how three political candidates in Indonesia made decisions to resist, engage in, or otherwise incorporate money politics into their electioneering strategies over the course of their campaigns. As they campaign, candidates encounter pressure from the institutional rules that guide elections, political parties, and voters, and must also negotiate complex social relationships to remain competitive. For anticorruption candidates, this context presents additional challenges for building and maintaining their identities. Some of these candidates establish their campaign parameters early and are able to stay their course. For others, the campaign trail results in an avalanche of compromises, each one eating away at their sense of what constitutes "moral" and "acceptable" behavior. The Candidate's Dilemma delves into the lived experiences of candidates to offer a nuanced study of how the political and personal intersect when it comes to money politics, anticorruptionism, and electoral campaigning in Indonesia.

Book Indonesia s Overseas Labour Migration Programme 1969 2010

Download or read book Indonesia s Overseas Labour Migration Programme 1969 2010 written by Wayne Palmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Indonesia's Overseas Labour Migration Programme, 1969-2010, Wayne Palmer offers for the first time a detailed, critical analysis of the way in which Indonesia's Overseas Labour Migration Programme is managed and how that fits with other developments within the Indonesian government. Commonly portrayed as a corrupt bunch of officials out to line their own pockets at the expense of migrant workers' welfare, here we are shown that they also make exceptions to rules when the law and political climate are not on their side. Wayne Palmer used interviews with over 120 officials in six Indonesian provinces and three diplomatic missions in the Asia-Pacific region to understand motivations for corrupt and other illegal behaviour.

Book More than an Ally

Download or read book More than an Ally written by Maryanne Kelton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ascendancy of the Coalition government in 1996 there was a marked shift of emphasis directed to deepening Australia's relations with America. The Coalition government strategically linked security and economic well-being and this linking was contextualized by threats both internal and external. By deepening the relationship of the US alliance in foreign, trade and defence policies, the Australian government sought to resonate on inherited and conservative perceptions of threat in the domestic environment. Maryanne Kelton introduces specific cases to demonstrate both the intensity and complexity of dealing with the US. Through these empirical studies the government's approach is examined across trade, security and industry sectors. The book adds to the current debate as it provides an explanatory framework for understanding the Australian government's choices in its relations with the USA across the broader spectrum of security issues.
