Download or read book Indicators Relevant to Farm Animal Welfare written by D. Smidt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEC-seminar on "Indicators relevant to Animal Welfare" was held on November 9 - 10, 1982 at the Institut fUr Tierzucht und Tierverhalten, Mariensee, of the Bundesforschungsanstal t fUr Landwirtschaft (FAL) - It was the intention of this meeting to outline the present state of know ledge on proven and potential indicators and to discuss their applica bility in the assessment of farm animal management systems. After an introduction of the legal and material aspects of animal welfare, the following topics were dealt with : - Significance of indicators relevant to animal welfare - Integrated systems of indicators relevant to animal welfare - Applicability of indicators in animal welfare research and control procedures. The concluding discussion focussed on the applicability of indicators in science and in practice. As a result of the seminar, the presently known indicators can be grouped into the following categories : - indicators already being applied to animal welfare assessment in prac tice, such as morbidity and mortality, technopathies, behavioural aberrations and production performances; - indicators of high sensitivity, such as physiological criteria, which as yet are too demanding for general application; - indicators still under investigation for their reliability. It became also evident that the continuous integration of indicators into canprehensive assessment systems promises an ever improving judgement of animal welfare problems. The proceedings will be of substantial value to the CEC in the pursuit of animal welfare problems

Book Overview Report on the Use of Indicators for Animal Welfare at Farm Level

Download or read book Overview Report on the Use of Indicators for Animal Welfare at Farm Level written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the outcome of a Commission's two-year project looking at Member States' approach to ensuring animal welfare on farm. The project explored their use of quality management systems for official controls, their use of animal welfare indicators for measuring the extent and seriousness of animal welfare problems and the reliability of the data they collect and report. Although there are promising developments from private standards in identifying suitable animal welfare indicators which are accepted by both the agri-food sector and by competent authorities, there is today no single set of indicators that are universally used to measure the state or evolution of animal welfare at farm level. However, it would be feasible to establish specific and appropriate indicators for different farming systems or production sectors to monitor whether the animal welfare conditions are improving, remaining stable or worsening. In order to establish such indicators, a number of essential steps must be taken, such as defining a clear objective, determining the starting state and implementing a monitoring process. Different interest groups are already using animal welfare indicators extensively (competent authorities, producers, private veterinarians). The data collected and reported by Member States reflect individual legal requirements without providing a clear judgement of the severity of the problem, and they do not give a picture of the animal welfare situation. The EU and its Member States face challenges when assessing compliance and compliance trendswith the legal requirements on animal welfare at farm level. This is because they have not set specific objectives nor baselines (points of comparison) and they have not defined how they intend to monitor progress. Member States approach to animal welfare is incoherent regarding the setting of policy objectives, use of indicators and analysis to inform future actions. This absence of objectives, baselines and indicators is common across many national projects that seek EU funds to improve animal welfare over and above the minimum legal requirements. The absence of all necessary elements (objective/target, indicators and monitoring system) before implementing the project makes it difficult to evaluate the real impact they have on the animals' wellbeing. Establishing the real state of welfare of animals is complex, because it depends on aspects such as health, environment and their ability to express natural behaviour. The current methods to determine the actual welfare of the animals on farms are generally time consuming and thus they increase production costs. Introducing automatic monitoring technologies at farm level and monitoring at other levels (e.g. slaughterhouses) may address some of these difficulties in the future. Overall, it appears that authorities only used animal welfare indicators when they were part of the legal requirements. They are however slowly moving towards incorporating indicators beyond those prescribed in legislation to assess the welfare of animals during their official controls. When authorities use indicators their controls provide a better assessment of the real state of welfare of animals at farm level. The majority of the EU requirements for animal welfare at farm focus on the provision of resources rather than animal based requirements. The European Commission could explore the feasibility to include animal welfare indicators within the current review of EU animal welfare legislation, looking at different types of possible purposes: to determine compliance trends in this area and support enforcement efforts, to provide feedback to farmers and help them improve their practices, and to gather macro-level data on the state of welfare of farm animals in order to inform policy-making at EU and national level.

Book Positive Aspects of Animal Welfare

Download or read book Positive Aspects of Animal Welfare written by Silvana Mattiello and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comfort during resting, half-closed eyes when feeding on highly palatable feed, or vigorous tail wagging when being brushed are some of the positive indicators that can be used to evaluate the quality of the environment in which domestic animals live. This has been a radical shift from the past as, until now, the welfare assessment on farms has meant assessing negative indicators, namely the number of lame animals, presence of lesions, or frequency of agonistic behaviours. However, the latest research confirms that the absence of a problem or of suffering does not necessarily imply that the animals are experiencing a good life and that their level of welfare is high. To guarantee high welfare standards, animals should experience positive conditions that allow them to live a “life worth living”, and positive indicators are needed to identify these conditions. This Special Issue focuses on the development and validation of indicators of positive welfare or on the refinement of the existing ones, as well as on the identification of suitable living conditions for providing positive welfare to farmed and companion animals.

Download or read book Topics in Pathophysiology of Hypertension written by H.V. Villareal and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-12-31 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not often that one one writes the foreword for a book based on a conference which contributed so much to our knowledge in the field of hypertension. During my close association with the International Society of Hypertension from 1978-1982, numerous satellite symposia were held in connection with five interna tional meetings. The specific topics addressed in this volume, the quality of the contributions, and the superb expertise of the contributors make this monograph one of the most outstanding publications that the International Society of Hyper tension has sponsored. Satellite symposia such as the present one serve useful and important functions for our society. They provide a mechanism of getting together the outstanding experts on special subjects for presentation of new data and for a free interchange of ideas. This type of endeavor is one of the most uniquely effective ways of accumulating new knowledge, because the data presented are subjected to critical review and discussion. No textbook or publication in journals can provide the type of critically evaluated information that comes from a small group is a mechanism for scientists to become meeting of this type. Furthermore, it acquainted or better acquainted with one another. All of this is, of course, very provocative and supportive of high quality research, one of the trademarks of the International Society of Hypertension. The conference for this book publication was organized by Drs.

Book Improving farm animal welfare

Download or read book Improving farm animal welfare written by H.J. Blokhuis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you define the quality of life of a farmed animal? This timely book addresses the complex and often controversial issues surrounding the assessment and improvement of farm animal welfare. Based on a large, multi-disciplinary EU funded research project called Welfare Quality, it discusses the relevance of science based welfare assessments and the importance of establishing a fruitful dialogue between science and society. An outline is given of the development of a workable welfare assessment system for cattle, pigs and chickens as well as practical ways of improving the animals' quality of life. This book synthesises the huge body of work carried out by the largest ever international network of scientists and stakeholders in Welfare Quality. It describes some of the obstacles encountered and their solution and why particular paths were chosen. It also clearly sets out what still needs to be done and presents selected strategies and technologies (automation, proxy indicators, targeting of risk factors, etc.) designed to ensure the continued improvement of welfare and its assessment. The book provides a valuable source of knowledge on farm animal welfare for social and animal scientists, students, teachers, policy makers, lobby groups and the animal industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, but particularly from those in developed countries, who now have the knowledge and resources to be able to improve the welfare of farm animals. The increased attention given to farm animal welfare in the West derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of ?nancial reward and ef?ciency has led to the development of intensive animal production systems that disturb the conscience of many consumers. In developing countries, human survival is still a daily uncertainty, so that provision for animal welfare has to be balanced against human welfare. Welfare is usually provided for only if it supports the output of the animal, be it food, work, clothing, sport or companionship. In reality there are resources for all if they are properly husbanded in both developing and developed countries. The inequitable division of the world’s riches creates physical and psychological poverty for humans and animals alike in many sectors of the world. Livestock are the world’s biggest land user (FAO, 2002) and the population is increasing rapidly to meet the need of an expanding human population. Populations of farm animals managed by humans are therefore incre- ing worldwide, and in some regions there is a tendency to allocate fewer resources, such as labour, to each animal with potentially adverse consequences on the a- mals’ welfare.

Download or read book Understanding Assessing and Improving Farm Animal Welfare Farm animal welfare understanding animal welfare written by Luc Mounier and published by Cab International. This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Improving welfare in farmed animals is good for productivity, consumer demand and, of course, the animals themselves. Covering the current scientific knowledge on the sensitivity and consciousness of animals, this translation of the Le bien-être des animaux d'élevage series reviews how to understand, assess and then improve farm animal welfare. Beginning with the philosophical and legal history of the consideration of their well-being, it synthesizes this information to build a common reference so that we all share the same notion of what animal welfare actually is. It then evaluates the welfare assessment process, which must be as reliable and objective as possible and require the use of appropriate indicators. Fully outlined in reference documents, these are summarized at the level of specific farming situations for easy reference. Concluding with the different ways of improving animal welfare, the book takes a holistic approach, considering the animals' physical and social environment, the integrated management of their health, the relationship between human and animal, the management of animal suffering, and treatment of animals during transportation and slaughter. Suitable for students and researchers of animal agriculture, animal science and veterinary medicine, this book provides an approachable and comprehensive coverage of this important topic"--
