Book Indiana s Weather and Climate

Download or read book Indiana s Weather and Climate written by John E. Oliver and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's more to Indiana weather than what greets us when we go outdoors. Ever wonder why the daily weather report is so erratic? Why the seasons seem to come too early or start too late? Whether there really is such a thing as global warming? This fascinating and informative book tells the story behind the daily forecast, seasonal variations, and climate change. It explains why there are seasons in this part of the world and examines some of their more dramatic aspects—thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods, droughts, and snowstorms. Here you'll find information on forecasting, weather satellites, and data collection; on faraway events that influence Indiana's weather, such as El Niño; and on long- and short-term changes in Indiana's climate beginning more than 1,000 years ago. Air pollution, urban heat islands, "the LaPorte anomaly"—it's all here in this comprehensive and up-to-date reference.

Book Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond

Download or read book Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond written by Janet G. McCabe and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is affecting Indiana's environment, threatening the way Hoosiers live and do business, and introducing new stresses to the state's economy, health, and infrastructure. And while scientists predict more days of extreme weather, increased public health risks, and reduced agricultural production in the coming years, Hoosiers still have a substantial say in determining their future environment. Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond confirms that Indiana can rise to meet this threat. The culmination of Indiana University's Prepared for Environmental Change Grand Challenge, this collection showcases how scientists, policymakers, communicators, and others are working hard to protect Indiana's economy and way of life by becoming more resilient. Researchers are creating new environmental resilience frameworks, building on years of existing research on how ecosystems can adapt, how social systems process threats in order to change, and how individuals themselves fit into the larger picture. In addition to presenting research results, Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond provides clear examples of how Hoosiers can make a difference by reducing risks, lessening the harmful impacts of climate change, and preparing for the unavoidable. What emerges in these pages is a hopeful, optimistic picture of how resilience is generalizable across systems--from forests to farms to cities--and how Hoosiers are mobilizing this resilience in the face of climate change.

Book History of Weather Observations

Download or read book History of Weather Observations written by Glen Conner and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The goal of this study is to document the primary weather observational history in Indianapolis that was part of the path that led to the current National Weather Service's observing program. Climatic data from stations in Indianapolis that made weather observations throughout the period of record are readily available from the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina; the Midwestern Regional Climate Center in Champaign, Illinois; and the State Climatologist of Indiana at Purdue University in Lafayette. The station's history in recent years is well documented and also available through easily obtainable climatic records. The challenge of this study was to identify Indianapolis' role in the development of the formal weather observational program and where it fit in the route from the Army surgeons, through the Smithsonian Observers, the Signal Service 2 Observer Sergeants, the Weather Bureau meteorologists, to the National Weather Service modern observational network of today. Therefore, the focus of this study was on the period before 1948, the generally accepted start of the modern era of the documentation of weather observations"--Introduction.

Book The Anthroposcene of Weather and Climate

Download or read book The Anthroposcene of Weather and Climate written by Paul Sillitoe and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is widely acknowledged that climate change is among the greatest global challenges of our times, it has local implications too. This volume forefronts these local issues, giving anthropology a voice in this great debate, which is otherwise dominated by natural scientists and policy makers. It shows what an ethnographic focus can offer in furthering our understanding of the lived realities of climate debates. Contributors from communities around the world discuss local knowledge of, and responses to, environmental changes that need to feature in scientifically framed policies regarding mitigation and adaptation measures if they are to be effective.
