Book Indiana in Decision

Download or read book Indiana in Decision written by Mark Akers and published by University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-25 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indiana is at an economic crossroads. Its history and culture do not embrace change, yet its economy is heavily tied to manufacturing and exportsAE"both of which are highly sensitive to the ever-changing global economy. The Hoosier state is aging and experiencing a brain drain from its universities. Its infrastructure needs repair and updating. And its public schools are average at a time when excellence is demanded. Indiana is at a point in its history when it must make decisions about the directions it will take in the future. Author Mark Akers examines the culture of Hoosiers and what makes them happy, the global economic forces that the state is facing, and describes those actions that state and local governments must implement to compete for economic growthAE"world-class infrastructure, the best education system anywhere, highly attractive cities and towns, meaningful incentives, and a stable, predictable, and helpful government. But even if these basic needs are addressed, can Indiana eventually prosper and develop a broad-based, innovative economy? Indiana (In)Decision describes IndianaAEs dilemma of indecisiveness at a time requiring rapid decision-making about its economic future. The book is meant for everyone, not just economists or academics.

Book The History of Indiana Law

Download or read book The History of Indiana Law written by David J. Bodenhamer and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long regarded as a center for middle-American values, Indiana is also a cultural crossroads that has produced a rich and complex legal and constitutional heritage. The History of Indiana Law traces this history through a series of expert articles by identifying the themes that mark the state’s legal development and establish its place within the broader context of the Midwest and nation. The History of Indiana Law explores the ways in which the state’s legal culture responded to—and at times resisted—the influence of national legal developments, including the tortured history of race relations in Indiana. Legal issues addressed by the contributors include the Indiana constitutional tradition, civil liberties, race, women’s rights, family law, welfare and the poor, education, crime and punishment, juvenile justice, the role of courts and judiciary, and landmark cases. The essays describe how Indiana law has adapted to the needs of an increasingly complex society. The History of Indiana Law is an indispensable reference and invaluable first source to learn about law and society in Indiana during almost two centuries of statehood.

Download or read book Conceiving Agency written by Michal S. Raucher and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceiving Agency: Reproductive Authority among Haredi Women explores the ways Haredi Jewish women make decisions about their reproductive lives. Although they must contend with interference from doctors, rabbis, and the Israeli government, Haredi women find space for—and insist on—autonomy from them when they make decisions regarding the use of contraceptives, prenatal testing, fetal ultrasounds, and other reproductive practices. Drawing on their experiences of pregnancy, knowledge of cultural norms of reproduction, and theological beliefs, Raucher shows that Haredi women assert that they are in the best position to make decisions about reproduction. Conceiving Agency puts forward a new view of Haredi women acting in ways that challenge male authority and the structural hierarchies of their conservative religious tradition. Raucher asserts that Haredi women's reproductive agency is a demonstration of women's commitment to Haredi life and culture as well as an indication of how they define religious ethics.

Book excerpt: With a new preface by the author, this reissue of Thomas Sowell's classic study of decision making updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Annointed, Sowell, one of America's most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency, but our very freedom because actual knowledge gets replaced by assumptions based on an abstract and elitist social vision f what ought to be.Knowledge and Decisions, a winner of the 1980 Law and Economics Center Prize, was heralded as a ”landmark work” and selected for this prize ”because of its cogent contribution to our understanding of the differences between the market process and the process of government.” In announcing the award, the center acclaimed Sowell, whose ”contribution to our understanding of the process of regulation alone would make the book important, but in reemphasizing the diversity and efficiency that the market makes possible, [his] work goes deeper and becomes even more significant.”
