Book The Indian Pharmaceutical Sector

Download or read book The Indian Pharmaceutical Sector written by Ramesh Govindaraj and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian pharmaceutical market ranks as the world's third largest in terms of volume, and has been growing at an annual rate of over 10 per cent over the last decade. Pharmaceutical policy in India is perceived primarily from an industrial perspective rather than a health sector priority, and is governed by a complex variety of laws and policies. This report reviews recent policy initiatives and their economic and health sector implications. It considers the profound gap that exists between the benefits which pharmaceuticals have to offer, and the reality that for millions of poor people in India medicines are often unaffordable, unsafe or improperly used. The report outlines some strategic options that could strengthen India's ability to ensure the availability, affordability, quality and rational use of essential medicines on a sustainable basis, using a mix of public and private sector resources.

Book Innovation Economic Development and Intellectual Property in India and China

Download or read book Innovation Economic Development and Intellectual Property in India and China written by Kung-Chung Liu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses intellectual property codification and innovation governance in the development of six key industries in India and China. These industries are reflective of the innovation and economic development of the two economies, or of vital importance to them: the IT Industry; the film industry; the pharmaceutical industry; plant varieties and food security; the automobile industry; and peer production and the sharing economy. The analysis extends beyond the domain of IP law, and includes economics and policy analysis. The overarching concern that cuts through all chapters is an inquiry into why certain industries have developed in one country and not in the other, including: the role that state innovation policy and/or IP policy played in such development; the nature of the state innovation policy/IP policy; and whether such policy has been causal, facilitating, crippling, co-relational, or simply irrelevant. The book asks what India and China can learn from each other, and whether there is any possibility of synergy. The book provides a real-life understanding of how IP laws interact with innovation and economic development in the six selected economic sectors in China and India. The reader can also draw lessons from the success or failure of these sectors.

Book India and the Patent Wars

Download or read book India and the Patent Wars written by Murphy Halliburton and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India and the Patent Wars contributes to an international debate over the costs of medicine and restrictions on access under stringent patent laws showing how activists and drug companies in low-income countries seize agency and exert influence over these processes. Murphy Halliburton contributes to analyses of globalization within the fields of anthropology, sociology, law, and public health by drawing on interviews and ethnographic work with pharmaceutical producers in India and the United States. India has been at the center of emerging controversies around patent rights related to pharmaceutical production and local medical knowledge. Halliburton shows that Big Pharma is not all-powerful, and that local activists and practitioners of ayurveda, India’s largest indigenous medical system, have been able to undermine the aspirations of multinational companies and the WTO. Halliburton traces how key drug prices have gone down, not up, in low-income countries under the new patent regime through partnerships between US- and India-based companies, but warns us to be aware of access to essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries going forward.

Book Determinants of Intellectual Capital Disclosure

Download or read book Determinants of Intellectual Capital Disclosure written by Mohammed Shameem V. T. and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and rapid technological development have created the lot of changes in the different sects of human life, including business sector. One of it is that traditional accounting and reporting practices couldn't explain the exact status of the business because of increasing importance of intangible assets rather than tangible. As an evidence for this, researchers have identified the growing disparity between book value and market value of the company. Hence, this paper is an effort to identify the determinant of Intellectual capital disclosure which is firm-specific in Indian context. As far IC concerned, it possesses a vital role because of as said before increasing disparity between market value and book value of companies. Literature are saying IC can explain or at least can reduce this disparity. This study has chosen leading pharmaceutical companies included in Pharma sector. For this study, annual reports of a sample of 10 companies from NSE Pharma Index are analyzed over a three-year period from 2015-2017. Content analysis has been applied to calculate Intellectual Capital Disclosure score and Regression models are used to examine the relationship between IC disclosure and the selected variables. Results reveal that IC disclosure in Indian pharmaceutical sector is increasing year by year. While considering multiple regression analysis, the age of the company and number of independent directors are showing a significant positive relationship with Intellectual Capital disclosure. In other hand, variables such as value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) and leverage, size of the firm and profitability are showing an insignificant relationship with IC disclosure.

Book The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry

Download or read book The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry written by Yaeko Mitsumori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the impact of the revision of the Indian Patent Act (2005) on the Indian pharmaceutical industry, which has been achieving healthy growth over the past 30 to 40 years or more. As of 2005, the Indian pharmaceutical industry was ranked as No. 4 in the world in terms of volume and 15th in terms of value. WTO/TRIPS required India to revise its patent law, however, and to introduce product patents in the pharmaceutical field. Many not only in India but also in the world had argued that the local pharmaceutical industry could deteriorate once a strong patent law (such as a product patent) was introduced. However, the Indian pharmaceutical industry has continued to develop rapidly even after the revision of the patent law in 2005. This present study started with efforts to work out the reason the Indian pharmaceutical industry successfully expanded even after the introduction of product patents. The study found that a unique article (the so-called '3-d‘) inserted in the Patent Act 2005 might have played a role in diminishing or preventing a negative impact from the introduction of a strong patent system, such as a product patents. The study also considers that a change of the business model adopted by the Indian pharmaceutical industry might have contributed to diminishing the effect of the negative impact from the introduction of a strong patent law. This study also covers recent developments in India regarding intellectual property rights and the pharmaceutical industry. One is India’s very first compulsory license granted to an Indian pharmaceutical company, Natco, against the large German pharmaceutical firm Bayer; and the second is the Supreme Court decision on Novartis’ Gleevec. The study analyzes the fundamental problems that caused these two events: access to medicine and gaps in the concept of intellectual property in the pharmaceutical industry. As possible solutions to these fundamental issues, this book explores the ideas of voluntary licensing and tiered pricing.

Book Special Report India COVID 19 Briefing

Download or read book Special Report India COVID 19 Briefing written by Peter Howson and published by The Business Year. This book was released on with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Mumbai to Delhi and Kolkata to Bangalore, the Indian economy has been on an explosive upward trajectory in recent decades. While the economy is widely diversified, the country is perhaps best known for its world-famous ICT sector, while sectors like the behemoth pharmaceuticals industry and ever-growing manufacturing landscape also enjoy strong success. Yet much potential exists elsewhere, none more so than tourism—the country attracts only around 10 million arrivals a year, far short of tourism giants like France, which enjoys nine times that number. And with the strength and variety of destinations evident, it seems only a matter of time until India begins to receive the numbers of visitors it deserves. COVID-19, however, has put the breaks on Indian growth, having brought the economy to an uncomfortable halt in March, with the impacts continuing to be felt despite the partial lifting of lockdown measures over summer, with welfare initiatives failing to benefit the majority of now out-of-work Indians due to the sheer scale of the informal economy. This 22-page special report seeks to delve into the response of the federal government, contrast the impact of COVID-19 in India with other major economies, and cast a gaze beyond, with a deep dive into key sectors from pharma and ICT to tourism and more. What could India have done differently? Which main economic hubs should we look to for recovery? And which sectors are the COVID-19 winners and losers? We seek to answer these questions over the following pages.

This book was released on 2013-06-09 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceptions that the pace of new-drug development has slowed and that the pharmaceutical industry is highly profitable have sparked concerns that significant problems loom for future drug development. This Congressional Budget Office (CBO) study-prepared at the request of the Senate Majority Leader-reviews basic facts about the drug industry's recent spending on research and development (R&D) and its output of new drugs. The study also examines issues relating to the costs of R&D, the federal government's role in pharmaceutical research, the performance of the pharmaceutical industry in developing innovative drugs, and the role of expected profits in private firms' decisions about investing in drug R&D. In keeping with CBO's mandate to provide objective, impartial analysis, the study makes no recommendations. David H. Austin prepared this report under the supervision of Joseph Kile and David Moore. Book The WTO and India s Pharmaceuticals Industry

Download or read book The WTO and India s Pharmaceuticals Industry written by Sudip Chaudhuri and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995 brought about significant changes in international economic relations between countries. To comply with the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement of the WTO, India introduced product patent protection in pharmaceuticals from January 2005. TRIPS has generated a huge controversy in India and abroad. India has emerged as a major source of low-cost, quality drugs for the entire world and thus plays an important role. While there are a large number of pharmaceutical manufacturers in the world, only a handful of multinationals dominate the industry. By using patent rights, multinational companies prevented developing countries like India from realizing their potential of industrial growth and drug prices were among the highest in the world.
