Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Folk Tales There was once an old woman who was very poor. All her children were dead and she had but one grandchild, a young boy. These two dwelt apart from the rest of the tribe, and, as they had almost nothing of their own, they lived upon the scraps and leavings of others. Sometimes mocking tongues would jibe at them, saying: "Here are those whose moccasins and robes are the rags which we have thrown away." At these words the eyes of Katit, the boy, would flash with rage, but his grandmother would droop her head in silence. One day the tribe moved to another and a better place where there was much game, and Katit and his grandmother followed the trail far in the rear. "What is that?' asked the old woman, pointing to something which was lying among the bushes on one side of the trail. Book Folktales from Northern India

Download or read book Folktales from Northern India written by Sadhana Naithani and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-10-08 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first single volume collection of classic Hindi folktales by translators William Crooke and Pandit Ram Gharib Chaube. In 1891, at a time when the study of India was primarily based on ancient texts, coins, and material remains, William Crooke dared to focus on living India—its everyday culture, age-old customs, and fictional narratives. With Pandit Ram Gharib Chaube, he recorded and published, over a period of six years, a remarkable collection of folktales from northern India. The tales reflect the tapestry of social and personal lives of this region, the epicenter of a revolt against British rule in 1857. Although many of the tales were published in British ethnographic journals, a number of the manuscripts, in Chaube's handwriting, were unpublished; others existed only as old microfilm in a New Delhi library. Never before have they appeared as a single volume or been available in any one library or archive.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taytay's Tales: Collected and Retold Taytay's Tales were collected for a little girl with an insatiable thirst for "stories." The first ones were gotten by chance from the young Indian boy who has kindly illustrated this collection. Ann enjoyed them so thoroughly that we teased and cajoled other Indians into telling us other folktales, and so the number and our joy in them grew. We think perhaps other little children - and some grown-ups, too - may derive the same pleasure from them, so we should like to share our stories. As mentioned above, the illustrations have been sketched and painted by a seventeen-year-old Hopi boy Fred Kabotie, whose Indian name is Na-kah-woh-ma (It happens again and again like the sunrise), with the exception of a few of the pen-and-ink sketches drawn by Otis Polelonema, another Hopi boy. Neither of these boys has had any training in art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. No one knew better where to find the beautiful, colored shells which he strung into necklaces for the little girls. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joyful Star: Indian Stories for Camp Fire Girls In this collection of legends, my aim is to present to the reader a picture of the life and the ideals of the Indian maiden and mother as the;r are illustrated in the legends, folk-tales, and a few historical accounts from various tribes and nations of Indians in North and South America. The making of such a collection has proven a much more difficult piece of work than I had anticipated; but it has been most interesting and profitable. This work has opened wide a new world to me; it has filled me with respect and admiration for the Indian woman. It seems that the Indian woman is Wise, is brave, and withal is gentle, modest and affection ate: she is a devoted wife, living her life of labour with quiet cheerfulness: she is a tender mother, training her children with the most pre cise care, infusing into the minds of her young sons the ambition to become the bravest war riors, or the most skilled hunters, and educating her little daughters, from their very babyhood, to fill their place in the tribal life with the great est efficiency. From almost every phase of the Indian woman's life and experience, her white sister may learn lessons of inestimable value. With this thought, I am sending out these legends for the use of Camp Fire Girls and for all maidens who would turn aside for a time from the noisy highway, and follow the quiet trails through the forest, where once walked the Indian maiden with reverent love for the smallest flower at her feet, for it, too, partook of the nature of the Great Spirit, who cared for his children of the forest. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Fairy Tales as Told to the Little Children of the Wigwam N the long ago when the red men were the free and undisturbed occupants of this vast continent, one of their greatest pleasures was to repeat the won der-stories dear to the hearts of their people. When they had gathered around the crackling logs in the long winter evenings, or had stretched themselves on the grass under the starry skies of summer nights, old and young would listen in silent delight to the tales of mythical heroes who, they fondly believed, once dwelt on this earth and were far stronger and wiser than mere mortals. But these were not all. As the red children looked upward at the stars shining down upon them so brightly and lovingly; or as they turned their eyes upon the sparkling waters of the stream or lake; they fancied them alive with other and strange beings who had a charm and magic of their own. These, too, were woven into the tales to which they listened with eagerness and delight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Nights' Entertainment: Or, Folk-Tales From the Upper Indus; With Numerous Illustrations by Native Hands In publishing the following stories, it is not needful to write much by way of introduction. As translations from the Panjabi of the Upper Indus, they are as literal as idiom and freedom of expression would permit. Their collection and compilation were the work of years, bringing solace in trouble and respite from the weariness of the long glowing days of summer in that hottest of all hot places, the Peshawur Valley. As folk-tales they claim of course the highest possible antiquity, being older than the Jatakas, older than the Mihabhirata, older than history itself. From age to age, and from generation to generation, they have been faithfully handed down by people rude and unlearned, who have preserved them through all the vicissitudes of devastating wars, changes of rule and faith, and centuries of oppression. They are essentially the tales of the people. They are truly representative of the quaint legends and stories which form the delight of the village hujra or guesthouse on winter-nights, when icy winds are blowing over mountain and plain; when the young men of the village community gather round the blazing logs to be charmed by the voice of some wandering minstrel, to listen agape to his incredible descriptions of the miseries and the joys of hapless love, or to fantastic tales of giants and fairies; or when the weary wayfarer, if not too spent to sit up, alternates the recital of fictitious wonders by news from the outer world, or commands the attention of auditors as simple as himself, by circumstantial accounts of disastrous chances of his own by flood and fell. Download or read book Tales of the Sun written by Mrs. Howard Kingscote and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of the Sun, Or Folklore of Southern Indian is a collection of twenty-six classic Indian fables as told to author Georgiania Kingscote. This collection marks the first time many of these tales were ever published, and certainly the first time they were published in English. With the assistance of co-author Pandit Natesa Sastri, Kingscote makes these fables accessible to a western audience for the first time. While these stories will be new to most readers, there is a thread of familiarity that runs through each tale presented in this collection. For while these tales were born and developed in India, they include the universal themes that make up all good stories: good versus evil, love versus hate, life versus death. In her introduction, author Kingscote does note one peculiarity, "namely, that craft and cunning are more generally rewarded than virtue, and stupidity condemned. This is the national characteristic." The collection of stories included in Tales of the Sun are mostly entertaining. Standouts include The Soothsayer's Son, The Lost Camel, and The Beggar and the Five Muffins. While not every tale is a hit, and the lessons of some can seem outdated to the modern reader, Kingscote has been largely successful in her presentation of illuminating fables from Indian culture. Any lover of children's fables will enjoy this collection. It provides the reader with the rare opportunity to read new stories that will seem comfortably familiar. The Tales of the Sun, Or Folklore of Southern Indian is recommended reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
