Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general survey of all the inscriptional material in the Sanskrit, Prakrit, and modern Indo-Aryan languages, including donative, dedicatory, panegyric, ritual, and literary texts carved on stone, metal, and other materials. This material comprises many thousands of documents dating from a range of more than two millennia, found in India and the neighboring nations of South Asia, as well as in many parts of Southeast, central, and East Asia. The inscriptions are written, for the most part, in the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts and their many varieties and derivatives. Inscriptional materials are of particular importance for the study of the Indian world, constituting the most detailed and accurate historical and chronological data for nearly all aspects of traditional Indian culture in ancient and medieval times. Richard Salomon surveys the entire corpus of Indo-Aryan inscriptions in terms of their contents, languages, scripts, and historical and cultural significance. He presents this material in such a way as to make it useful not only to Indologists but also non-specialists, including persons working in other aspects of Indian or South Asian studies, as well as scholars of epigraphy and ancient history and culture in other regions of the world.

Book excerpt: The most significant of India's contributions of the civilization of the world was made in the ancient period. Unfortunately, the history of this glorious epoch, which is an interesting chapter in the annals of human civilization, was lost and we have been reconstructing it on the basis of information gathered from various sources. Of these, epigraphy is the most important, since the major part of what we already know about ancient India is derived from the study of inscriptions. In the present work, Professor D.C. Sircar deals with various problems relating to Indian pigraphy and it is expected to be useful to people interested in ancient Indian history in general and Indian inscriptions in particular. Some of the topics discussed herein are: inscriptions and their evidence, languages in which the inscriptions are written, writing materials, the preparation and preservation of documents, copperplate grants, stanzas on bhumi-dana, Indian epigraphy abroad, systems of dating and the different eras, technical expressions including royal titles and official designations, taxes, land measures, nomenclature, etc. There are thirty-six plates illustrating various types of epigraphical records.

Book Indian Epigraphical Glossary

Download or read book Indian Epigraphical Glossary written by Dineschandra Sircar and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1966 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interested world of scholars is sure to receive with gratitude this latest work from the erudite pen of Prof. D.C. Sircar who has opened up for us new vistas in the study of Indian antiquities. Prof. Sircar`s Indian Epigraphical Glossary, characterised by a wide sweep of vision based on a meticulous attention to details, is a contribution of the utmost importance. Here one finds an embarras de richesses in a comprehensive dictionary of technical expressioins found in documents embracing nearly 2000 years in time and the entire Indian sub-continent in space and written in a variety of languages. It offers a panorama of Indian political and cultural life as enshrined in a series of expressions which are precise and historically important. Many of them remained obscure, and Prof. Sircar, with his thorough knowledge of the subject in the study of which he has spent a life-time, has succeeded in most cases in giving quite satisfactory interpretations. The mass of material in this invaluable publication, which will continue to be an indispensable work of reference for many years to come, brings in a volume of lexical material for the compilation of an exhaustive Dictionary of Sanskrit. The importance of the work, which I would consider epoch-making in the domain of Indology, has been considerably enhanced by three remarkable Appendices.

Book Buddhism and Buddhist Literature in Early Indian Epigraphy

Download or read book Buddhism and Buddhist Literature in Early Indian Epigraphy written by Kanai Lal Hazra and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: This is the first detailed authentic record of Buddhism as depicted in the inscriptions of ancient India. In this scholarly work the author discusses the significance of inscriptions and shows how they, as primary source material, play a major role in providing the factual underpinnings of the social, political, religious, cultural, and literary history of early India. This work, based both on the author's original study of the inscriptions of the period and the extant literature on the subject, provides an in-depth account, on the one hand, of the richness and variety of the information provided by them and; on the other, a description of the development of Buddhism in Asoka's time. By skilfully weaving together all the available information, the author is able to paint a vivid portrait of Asoka, the great Mauryan ruler, and his munificent patronage of and active steps in furthering the Buddhist faith. He shows too that following the Second Buddhist Council the Buddhist world saw a schism in the Buddhist Samgha and the formation of two major sects: the Sthaviravada or the Hinayana, on the one hand, and the Theravada or the Mahasamghika, on the other, and that from these about eighteen sub-sects were born. Drawing upon some hitherto untapped inscriptional sources, this study shows how these sub-sects came into existence, their central tenets and doctrines, and their development under the patronage of the rulers of the time who played an extremely active role in their growth and development. This work is thus a valuable addition to the earlier literature on the subject, widening and deepening its ambit, and should prove of great value to historians and research scholars, and other readers interested in the development of Buddhism in its formative years. Contents Preface 1. Importance of the Study of Inscriptions as Sources for Social, Political, Religious, Geographical, Linguistic, and Literary Studies 2. Inscriptions of the Pre-Mauryan Period 3. Asoka, the Mauryan Ruler 4. Studies on the Principal Buddhist Sects, their Religion and Literature Summary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to put the sacred and sensuous bronze statues from India’s Chola dynasty in social context From the ninth through the thirteenth century, the Chola dynasty of southern India produced thousands of statues of Hindu deities, whose physical perfection was meant to reflect spiritual beauty and divine transcendence. During festivals, these bronze sculptures—including Shiva, referred to in a saintly vision as “the thief who stole my heart”—were adorned with jewels and flowers and paraded through towns as active participants in Chola worship. In this richly illustrated book, leading art historian Vidya Dehejia introduces the bronzes within the full context of Chola history, culture, and religion. In doing so, she brings the bronzes and Chola society to life before our very eyes. Dehejia presents the bronzes as material objects that interacted in meaningful ways with the people and practices of their era. Describing the role of the statues in everyday activities, she reveals not only the importance of the bronzes for the empire, but also little-known facets of Chola life. She considers the source of the copper and jewels used for the deities, proposing that the need for such resources may have influenced the Chola empire’s political engagement with Sri Lanka. She also investigates the role of women patrons in bronze commissions and discusses the vast public records, many appearing here in translation for the first time, inscribed on temple walls. From the Cholas’ religious customs to their agriculture, politics, and even food, The Thief Who Stole My Heart offers an expansive and complete immersion in a community still accessible to us through its exquisite sacred art.
