Book Indian Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indian Stories Classic Reprint written by Cicero Newell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Days Upon a hanging precipice atop of the Eagle Scout Butte there appeared a motionless and solitary figure - almost eagle-like he perched! The people in the camp below saw him, but none looked at him long. They turned their heads quickly away with a nervous tingling, for the height above the plains was great. Almost spirit-like among the upper clouds the young warrior sat immovable. It was Antelope. He was fasting and seeking a sign from the "Great Mystery," for such was the first step of the young and ambitious Sioux who wished to be a noted warrior among his people. He is a princely youth, among the wild Sioux, who hunts for his tribe and not for himself! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days in North India Soon after dark I found myself alone, rushing along the line which, for upwards Of a thousand miles, leads to Delhi. There is little of any interest to attract the eye or break the ennui of the long journey. I do not remember any tunnel the whole way. We passed along the shore of the Ganges, though not always close to it, and across plains, ex cept when, at some points, we skirted a low line Of hills rising like a line of beach to this ocean of al luvial soil. There was not much visible Of any of the towns we passed. The natives who crowded the station-houses were very like the people we saw every where. They pushed along in feverish anxiety to get their seats, being frequently encumbered with their bundles of household gear. Their wives and children clung to them all the while, and jabbered with nerv ous earnestness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Nights in the Tropics The common saying among the New England settlers that the only good Indian was a dead Indian, embodied the national sentiment towards the unfortunate Indians. The treatment of the tribes followed the sentiment. The Indian was pushed back, and if he resisted the invasion of his lands he was shot. In Spanish America to-day the Indians are in numbers practically what they were at the conquest. They are Christians and civilized, and are eligible to any office in the state, the church or the army. In two hundred years we of the north, writes Mr. Lummis, will be classifying, and articulating, and lecturing on the bones of the prehistoric Indian, while all through South and Central America the Indian will be cultivating the land and increasing in numbers.
