Book A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee

Download or read book A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee written by Laah Ceil Manatoi Elaah Tubbee and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee, published in 1852, begins with testimonials regarding Okah Tubbee's flute-playing abilities and with a lightly edited version of Lewis Allen's "Essay Upon the Indian Character" from the earlier edition of Tubbee's narrative, as well as the so-called Indian Covenant "between the Six Nations and the Choctaws." Tubbee's narrative begins with brief recollections of his father and Tubbee's childhood with his "unnatural mother." Tubbee's visit to Choctaw Indians in Alexandria is described before his apprenticeship to the cruel blacksmith Mr. Russell, and his subsequent apprenticeship to Dr. A.P. Merrill, leading to his desire to become an "Indian Doctor." Tubbee's details his travels and voyages by steamboat, first as a musician with the Louisiana Volunteers and later on his own. Towards the end of his narrative, Tubbee expresses a desire to let his wife, Laah Ceil, speak for herself. In this final, additional section, Laah Ceil describes her birth, her education, her Christian convictions, and the manner in which she met and married Tubbee. She also recounts their travels together and their advocacy "in behalf of the Indians" and against forced relocation. The Sketch concludes with an original poem by Laah Ceil and a collection of letters, documents, and vouchers attesting to Okah Tubbee's identity and his medical skill. A DOCSOUTH BOOK. Book Chief Seattle and the Town That Took His Name

Download or read book Chief Seattle and the Town That Took His Name written by David M. Buerge and published by Sasquatch Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first thorough historical account of the great Washington State city and its hero, Chief Seattle—the Native American war leader who advocated for peace and strove to create a successful hybrid racial community. When the British, Spanish, and then Americans arrived in the Pacific Northwest, it may have appeared to them as an untamed wilderness. In fact, it was a fully settled and populated land. Chief Seattle was a powerful representative from this very ancient world. Here, historian David Buerge threads together disparate accounts of the time from the 1780s to the 1860s—including native oral histories, Hudson Bay Company records, pioneer diaries, French Catholic church records, and historic newspaper reporting. Chief Seattle had gained power and prominence on Puget Sound as a war leader, but the arrival of American settlers caused him to reconsider his actions. He came to embrace white settlement and, following traditional native practice, encouraged intermarriage between native people and the settlers—offering his own daughter and granddaughters as brides—in the hopes that both peoples would prosper. Included in this account are the treaty signings that would remove the natives from their historic lands, the roles of such figures as Governor Isaac Stevens, Chiefs Leschi and Patkanim, the Battle at Seattle that threatened the existence of the settlement, and the controversial Chief Seattle speech that haunts to this day the city that bears his name.

This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Gardner Drake (October 11, 1798 - June 14, 1875) was an eminent American antiquarian.Drake was born in Pittsfield, New Hampshire. His father, Simeon Drake, was initially a farmer like his four brothers, but sold his homestead in 1805 to open a store in neighboring Northwood. His mother, Love Muchmore Drake (nee Tucke), was the daughter of a minister. Drake was named Samuel after his mother's eldest brother, Samuel J. Tucke, and the middle name Gardner derives from Samuel J. Tucke's wife's maiden name. Drake was educated in the common schools, and from 1818 to 1825 taught in a district school. He was fond of literary pursuits, and in 1828 he went to Boston, where he established an antiquarian bookstore - the first of its kind in the United States - and devoted himself to the study of early United States history. He continued to do business as a bookseller and publisher during his life, and the most noted writers of his day availed themselves of the store of information that he had collected. He was one of the founders (1847) of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, was its president in 1858, and for many years was the editor of its quarterly Register, contributing many articles to its pages. In 1858-60 he resided in London, England. Drake died of pneumonia in Boston on June 14, 1875, aged 76"

Book Pablo Tac Indigenous Scholar

Download or read book Pablo Tac Indigenous Scholar written by Pablo Tac and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes available a remarkable body of writings, the only indigenous account of early nineteenth-century California. Written by Pablo Tac, this work on Luiseño language and culture offers a new approach to understanding California’s colonial history. Born and raised at Mission San Luis Rey, near San Diego, Pablo Tac became an international scholar. He traveled to Rome, where he studied Latin and other subjects, and produced these historical writings for the Vatican Librarian Cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti. In this multifaceted volume, Pablo Tac’s study is published in the original languages and in English translation. Lisbeth Haas introduces Pablo Tac’s life and the significance of the record he left. She situates his writing among that of other indigenous scholars, and elaborates on its poetic quality. Luiseño artist James Luna considers Tac’s contemporary significance in a series of artworks that bring Pablo Tac into provocative juxtaposition with the present day. Transcribed by Marta Eguía, Cecilia Palmeiro, Laura León Llerena, Jussara Quadros, and Heidi Morse, with facing-page translation by Jaime Cortez, Guillermo Delgado, Gildas Hamel, Karl Kottman, Heidi Morse, and Rose Vekony

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Biography, Containing the Lives of More Than Two Hundred Indian Chiefs Whoever expects here a preface of apologies, will loose but little time in finding a disappointment. We have none to make. All must acknowledge the great want of such a work, which is deemed a sufficient excuse for adding another title to the long catalogue of books. No exertions have been remitted, to render it as perfect as its magnitude would admit. It is the first general attempt to embody Indian history in the only proper manner. The following notices have been thrown together within a few months, although many years have elapsed since the author began the collection of materials, and set about gaining a knowledge of this kind of history. The first adventurer in any untrodden path, must often find himself embarrassed for want of landmarks, by which to direct his course. This will be apparent to the reader. But he will not be the first to whom it has been thus apparent. A small edition is now offered, which if well received, will be much improved and enlarged, and placed at the public disposal.
