Book India and the English Classic Reprint

Download or read book India and the English Classic Reprint written by Barbara Wingfield-Stratford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and the English The great bar, hitherto, to the furtherance of that better understanding between East and West whose consummation would be of such incalculable value to England and India alike, has been the apathy and indifference most people - even intelligent people - feel towards that strange and surpassingly wonderful Eastern coun try whose destiny has been linked - rwith such apparent incongruity - to our own. If I should succeed in arousing in only one or two readers the desire to know something more of India, to study one aspect or another of her life, to seek friendship with her people I shall feel that my purpose has not been altogether unaccomplished. Our anglo-indian literature is so very ex tensive that I could not attempt anything like a complete index; but the young student will find the notes useful in this way, and to the more experienced reader they will show my sources of information, and serve to test the accuracy or general fidelity with which I have followed my authorities. Any attempt on the part of educated Indians to unravel the tangled web of Indian history during British supremacy is construed as creating disaffection to the British Government. We have also to expose many falsehoods that have been wilfully spread as truth by English writers. Foremost among these is the one which represents that India was given over to anarchy until the British assumed its government. India would never have existed but for England If left to herself, India would degenerate into a bear 4 t a garden2 and so on and so forth. Another is that 7 India has been conquered by the sword. These falsehoods have to be thoroughly exposed by a consideration of the means employed and the policy pursued by the British. The historian, like the scientist, has not only to classify but to generalise and explain by means of theories and hypotheses. This requires what. Book A History of British India Vol 1

Download or read book A History of British India Vol 1 written by William Wilson Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British India, Vol. 1: To the Overthrow of the English in the Spice Archipelago Again the victors fought over the spoils. Those spoils lay chiefly not on the Indian coast, but in the Eastern Archipelago. India was then a half way house for the richer traffic of the Spice Islands. The third Act unfolds the strife between the two Protestant sea-powers for this prize. The Nether lands had long contained the marts by which the produce of the East, transhipped at Lisbon to Bruges, Antwerp, and Amsterdam, was distributed to N orthem and Central Europe. The capture of the Indian trade seemed to Holland a continuation of her just revolt against Portugal and Spain, a heritage from her hard subjection, and the seal of the independence which she had so dearly won. To England it was but the mercantile development, on an extended scale, of the sea enterprise of the Elizabethan adventurers. Download or read book Some Aspects of British Rule in India Classic Reprint written by Sudhindra Bose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of British Rule in India The usual point of view of the English rulers of India is that all is well in India. It may be frankly stated that this idea is generally accepted outside of India. In these pages the writer makes an attempt to present some aspects of British rule in India from the angle of the ruled. I may add that I am fully aware and duly appreciative of the many solid advantages of English rule; and if I have not dwelt on those aspects of Indian administration it is because I have considered it more important just now to point out certain evils and suggest constructive re forms. The policy of repression which characterizes the modern regime is, I believe, doing much harm. For the sake of the Em pire responsible English statesmanship should give earnest con sideration to the betterment of conditions in India. Book Early Records of British India Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Records of British India Classic Reprint written by James Talboys Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Records of British India The subject-matter of the present volume is, perhaps, sufficiently told on the title-page. It may, however, be explained that the compiler was originally employed to report on the records of the Home Department in Calcutta, and intended to confine his extracts to the papers preserved there. As, however, he proceeded with the task it was discovered that the value of those records had been much overrated. They were incomplete in themselves, and not only overloaded with detail, but were mostly written in the verbose style of the eighteenth century. Those of an early date had been destroyed in the great storm of 1737, or were lost at the capture of Calcutta in 1756 by the Nawab of Bengal. Those of a later date throw considerable light upon the progress of affairs during the transition period, when the Company's servants were beginning to exercise a political power in India; but they do not furnish details as regards the social life of the early English settlers in Bengal, which is still a desideratum in Anglo-Indian history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Clive: The Foundation of British Rule in India IF Sir Walter Ralegh, as Mr Martin Hume described him in the volume with which the present series began, was the man who laid the foundation stone of the Colonial Empire Of Great Britain, Clive may be called with not less truth, in the words Of Sir Alfred Lyall, the man to whom above all others the English are indebted for the foundation of our Empire in India.' The son of a small and impoverished country squire, belong ing to a family which, although Old, had never previously been distinguished, Robert Clive in a remarkably short time won for it a name second to none in the history of the world.
