Download or read book A History of Monroe County West Virginia written by Oren F. Morton and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1974 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains both a sourcebook of genealogical data and a group-family record, with slightly greater detail marshaled in the sourcebook section. A significant portion of the work, nevertheless, is devoted to the general history of the county, explaining, in the customary manner, when, how, and why the county was settled and tracing the various phases of its development. The group-family portion of the book, occupying a full third of the text, carries the lines of descent far enough down to enable the present generation to recognize relationships. An abundance of available data, coupled with the desire to set forth the family histories of as many county residents as possible, compelled the author to employ a compact form of narrative. This ""skeletal"" history, embracing all vital and ascertainable facts, has the virtue of precluding biographical embellishments, and at once puts before the researcher all that he needs to know of several hundred families and many thousands of related individuals. All families discussed in this section are indexed alphabetically for easy reference. The remainder of the book is comprised of genealogical source materials
Download or read book Historic Mills of West Virginia written by Tracy Lawson and published by 35th Star Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times, people used mills to process grain, and a mill was often the first structure planned and built in a new community. At the close of the American Revolution, it was believed that every village and town in the United States had access to a water-powered mill. Hundreds, if not thousands, of mills once dotted the hills and glades of what is now West Virginia. Though the vast majority are gone, towns all over the Mountain State bear the names of the mills that put them on the map. History buffs, nature photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts, you are invited to come along on an adventure: hit the Country Roads in search of fifty-three historic water mills built between 1735 and 1976. Together, these structures tell the story of West Virginia’s agricultural and industrial past. A few are still in operation. Some are in ruins. Many are preserved in their original state, and still others have taken on roles as private residences, shops, and museums. Whether operational or abandoned to decay, the historic mills of West Virginia stand in testament to the ingenuity and independent spirit of those entrepreneurs who were millers, but also bankers, economists, and mechanical engineers. This book features over one hundred illustrations, regional and county maps with the mill locations marked, and QR codes that give instant access to driving directions.

Download or read book The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites written by Clarence Raymond Geier and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent work of anthropologists, historians, and historical archaeologists has changed the very essence of military history. While once preoccupied with great battles and the generals who commanded the armies and employed the tactics, military history has begun to emphasize the importance of the “common man” for interpreting events. As a result, military historians have begun to see military forces and the people serving in them from different perspectives. The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites has encouraged efforts to understand armies as human communities and to address the lives of those who composed them. Tying a group of combatants to the successes and failures of their military commanders leads to a failure to understand such groups as distinct social units and, in some instances, self-supporting societies: structured around a defined social and political hierarchy; regulated by law; needing to be supplied and nurtured; and often at odds with the human community whose lands they occupied, be they those of friend or foe. The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites will afford students, professionals dealing with military sites, and the interested public examples of the latest techniques and proven field methods to aid understanding and conservation of these vital pieces of the world’s heritage.
