Book Independent Review Proposed Management Arrangements for Queensland s East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery

Download or read book Independent Review Proposed Management Arrangements for Queensland s East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery written by John Gunn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery (ECIFF) is a complex multispecies, multi gear (multiple net types and line) fishery with more than 400 commercial fishers and some 750,000 recreational and charter fishers. Recreational fishers are believed to take at least half of the catch. The fishery has a large geographical footprint, extending from Cape York to the New South Wales border, the majority of which is in a World Heritage Area (WHA) encompassing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP). In reviewing the proposed new management arrangements for the fishery, the Panel was asked to pay particular attention to the shark sector of the fishery, the potential for interactions with protected species, the need to limit effort in the fishery, the level of information required to effectively manage the fishery, data validation and performance measures and management responses.

Book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management

Download or read book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management written by Sarah L. Fowler and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.

Book Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources

Download or read book Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Marine Resources Service and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides a review, commentary and tabulations of the main trends that have occurred in exploitation of fisheries resources since the 1970s, largely as they are reflected in the FAO database on fishery landings, supplemented with selected information from the fishery literature. Reviews were prepared separately for the 15 main areas into which FAO divides the world's oceans for statistical purposes. They are then compared from a global perspective to reveal relative trends by species and areas, which are highlighted. Several special topics are reviewed, including tuna and tuna-like species, whales and dolphins, and environmental issues in fisheries.
