Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's capital and the state of Virginia were a hotbed of political and social turmoil that marked the 1960s and 1970s. The area saw anti-Vietnam War protests, civil rights marches and students clamoring for a cultural revolution. Underground publications in D.C. and Virginia sprang up to document the radical change and question the "straight media." Off Our Backs led the charge for women's equality. The Gay Blade fought for the rights of homosexuals. Even the FBI began infiltrating the underground press movement by planting informants and creating fake magazines to attract suspicious "radicals". Join author and former underground editor Dale Brumfield as he traces the history of alternative press in the Commonwealth and the District. Book jacket.

Download or read book Project Censored Guide to Independent Media and Activism written by Peter Phillips and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2003-08-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The independent media are arguably more important than ever today, as corporate media’s line reads increasingly like a government press release rather than a free society’s analysis of the day’s important events. But there’s a lot to sort through: Independent newsmagazines and newspapers, local cable-TV access, and independent and microtransmitted radio are everywhere, offering a vast array of news, opinions, and information. New Indymedia activists alone now have direct links to more than sixty-five grassroots news sites around the world. The challenge we are faced with is two-fold: We must make these news sources widely accessible, but we must also find ways to compile, sort, and collectively release this real news to millions of people—a project that this invaluable guide for diversifying your access to information can make much more achievable.

Download or read book Marriage in Men s Lives written by Steven L. Nock and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two marriages in every marital union, his and hers. Men and women live in worlds that are organized around gender, and their marriages reflect differing realities. As life companions, they respond to each other; but they also respond to the cultural definitions of what it means to be a husband and a wife. What has fascinated social and behavioral scientists for several years, however, is not only that husbands' and wives' experiences are different, but also that 'his' marriage is better than 'hers'. Numerous findings have reported that married men are better off than married women on measures of both physical and mental health, but the reasons are not yet fully understood. In Marriage in Men's Lives Dr. Nock proposes an explanation to this issue. He focuses on marriage as a system of rules, customs, and expectations. The book shows that marriage changes men on basic dimensions of achievement, participation in public social life, and philanthropy because marriage reinforces such behaviors as part of adult masculinity. Men in modern society crave well-being, comfort, luxury, and prestige, and marriage affords a means of achieving these things within circumscribed legitimate boundaries. Using a huge data base of over 6,000 interviews with men the author has studied since 1979, Nock draws some interesting and far-reaching conclusions about the nature of marriage, and predicts that marriage is definitely here to stay.
